Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 30

As Coach Tunde addressed the team, Aisa couldn't hold back any longer. She interrupted him, her voice urgent. "Um… Listen up, guys. I'm sorry, Coach, but this is important. Guys," Aisa said, paused and sighed. Then she continued, "This game… it's going to be our last together as teammates"

The words hung up in the air like a dense fog, suffocating the once vibrant atmosphere. Shock rippled through the group as their faces contorted in disbelief and disappointment

"What do you mean, Aisa?" Coach Tunde questioned, his eyes searching hers for answers

Aisa steeled herself against the raw vulnerability threatening to overtake her. With a shaky breath, she continued, "My family and I are moving to the United States. My mother has been battling breast cancer since I was nine, and her condition hasn't improved despite the treatment she's receiving at the hospital. My father decided that relocating to the U.S. would give her access to better medical care. My sister and I will also start attending school there, and my father will move his business there as well. We know it's a restart, but we have to do what's best for our family"

The team erupted into a chorus of whispers, their expressions ranging from shock to sorrow. Coach Tunde's gaze softened, a mixture of understanding and sympathy reflecting in his eyes

"Go in peace, Aisa," Coach Tunde offered a comforting hand on Aisa's shoulder. "You will always be in our hearts"

"Thank you, Coach," Aisa managed, her voice tight with emotion

"Aisa… No. Captain, we will miss you," Aanu uttered, her voice thick with unshed tears. The rest of the team silently nodded in agreement, their eyes shining with shared sadness

Vicky, however, couldn't contain her tears any longer. "Why, Aisa?" she questioned, her voice cracking. "Aanu and I worked so hard to get here, and we wanted to represent Rose Mary High School together with you at the nationals this year. And now, you're leaving?"

Aisa's heart clenched at the sight of Vicky's anguish, and she enveloped her friend in a tight embrace. "I'm sorry, Vicky," she murmured, her own voice heavy with emotion. "It can't be helped"

Pulling away, Aisa's expression grew serious, her resolve unwavering. "However, if I'm leaving, I'll make sure to secure that ticket at this year's Christmas Champions Cup for you all. Let's win this game together, girls"

The team's energy shifted, their sadness replaced by a newfound determination as they chorused, "Yeah!"

Coach Tunde observed the change in the team's demeanor, pride swelling in his chest. He marveled at the resilience of these young ladies, and at Aisa's ability to inspire them in the face of adversity. With a knowing smile, he thought, "Aisa, I chose the right person to lead the team as the Captain and Ace after all. Your selflessness has reignited their passion. Go on, girls – no one can stop you now"

At the Queens' bench, an air of trepidation filled the room. The Queens were on the verge of losing their chance to participate at the coveted Christmas Champions Cup, having witnessed the formidable skills of the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team. Mrs. Lawal gathered her team, her voice filled with urgency and determination

"Listen up, everyone," she began, "In the final quarter, we must strengthen our defense and score as many points as we can. We'll be making two substitutions: Shalom, you're out, and Tolu, you're in. Mayowa, you're out; Eno, you're in."

The changes brought a wave of murmurs among the Queens

"For better or for worse, these are the final ten minutes of the game," Mrs. Lawal continued, her voice ringing with conviction, "Let's give it our all and win this!"

"YEAH!" The Queens echoed their Coach's passion

Tosin, the team captain, took charge, her voice filled with unwavering resolve. "Alright, everyone, on the count of three, two, one, Charlie Queens! Fight!"

"YEAH!" the Queens bellowed in unison; their determination palpable

With an eleven-point difference between the teams, the stage was set for an epic battle in the final quarter. As the player took their positions on the court, one question lingered in the air: Would the Rose Mary High School run away with this one and secured their spot in this year edition of the annual Christmas Champions Cup, or would the Queens stage another miraculous historic comeback? Either way, the fate of both teams would be decided in just ten intense minutes

The energetic atmosphere in the arena was electric as the final quarter of the intense game between the Charlie Queens Academy and the Rose Mary High School, commenced. The Queens took possession of the ball, their sight set on securing the first points in the final quarter. Both teams had an impressive showing of support from their schools, and the echoes of musical cheers and enthusiastic shouts filled the air

Chioma, the Queens' Point guard, led the charge as they pushed towards the Rose Mary High School's basket in the final quarter. However, her advance was halted by Vicky, who appeared to have undergone a transformation since the first three quarters. Chioma couldn't help but notice the peculiar shift in the dynamics of the game, as all the Rose Mary High School Team players seemed to carry themselves differently after the two minutes-interval

She thought to herself, "what's going on? Vicky seems different now. And it's not just her – the whole team seems more focused. What happened during that break? Whatever it is, it's not going to stop us from achieving our goal." But Chioma didn't have time to ponder the question further. She had a game to win

Juet as Chioma was assessing the situation, Tosin stealthily positioned herself behind Vicky and signaled Chioma to make her move. Recognizing the opportunity, Chioma deftly dribbled past Vicky, leaving her stunned. Vicky attempted to react, but Tosin skillfully obstructed her path

As Chioma dashed towards the basket, Aisa hastily stepped in to defend. With a sly smile, Chioma sent a pass towards an open space. The ball appeared as if it'd sail out of bound, but suddenly, it ricochetted and change direction, heading straight for the hoop, as if it had been hit by someone. Eno, already airborne, caught the ball and executed a thunderous slam dunk for an alley-oop

"Nic pass, Tolu," Eno commended, as the spectators roared in approval, spurred on by the infectious beat of the musical cheers

The Rose Mary High School regrouped and initiated a play, with Hannah passing the ball to Vicky. Oblivious to Tolu's strategic positioning, they left themselves vulnerable to her quick thinking. Tolu saw her chance and forcefully bounced a pass with such intensity that the ball rocketed high into the air, arcing gracefully towards the hoop

As if synchronized, Eno leaped up to meet the airborne ball, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. The entire sequence unfolded so rapidly that neither Hannah nor Vicky had a chance to respond. Eno seized the opportunity and ferociously slammed the ball into the hoop, securing the Queens' second alley-oop in mere seconds

The electrifying play ignited an outpouring of excitement from the Queens and their supporters. The Queens exchanged exuberant high-fives as the gymnasium reverberated with rousing musical cheers, reflecting the triumphant spirit of the game. On the court, the Queens shared a moment of camaraderie, each player contributing their individual strengths to form an unstoppable force

As the game intensifies, Aisa clapped her hands to rally her teammates, demanding their attention. "Guys, this game is far from over," she reminded them, "The Queens are renowned for their relentless determination. It's that very drive that has allowed them to stage miraculous comebacks time and time again. We need to stay focused!"

The Rose Mary High School Basketball Team responded with a resounding "RIGHT!" as they prepared to face their opponents with renewed vigor.

The game resumed, and the Rose Mary High School Team initiated their attack with Vicky at the helm. However, Chioma quickly intercepted her advance

Vicky, rhythmically bouncing the ball, acknowledged the Queens' persistence, both admiring and loathing the indomitable spirit. "You guys don't know when to quit, do you?" she remarked. "As much as I love that attribute, I hate going up against someone who possesses it."

Chioma flashed a smile, recognizing the compliment hidden within the challenge. "I'll take that as compliment, so thanks. But know this – we are committed to winning this game, no matter the cost. We will be there! Bring it on!"

Meanwhile, under the hoop, Hannah and Eno engage in a heated exchange. Hannah's voice was laced with a mix of admiration and frustration, "Eno, I looked up to you, but I was disappointed when you lost your fighting spirit. When you came onto the court, I thought you were only here because you were forced to play, against your will. But your last four points proved me wrong. Now, I can take you on seriously with everything I've got"

Eno, pausing for a moment, retorted matter-of-factly, "You talk too much"

Hannah's expression turned angry, her eyes flashing with a fierce competitiveness.

Vicky's pass soared towards Aanu, who leaped into the air and attempted a three-pointer. The ball, however, rebounded off the rim, triggering a frenzied scramble for possession.

From the sidelines, both Coach Tunde and Mrs. Lawal hollered, "REBOUND!"

Eno expertly screened Hannah out, not allowing her any opportunity to move she got ready to leap for the rebound. She leaped for the air-borne ball and grabbed the rebound, shocking everyone in the gymnasium as they watch Eno beat Hannah to the rebound for the first time in the game. Eno's successful retrieval spurred the Queens into action as they swiftly launched a fast break attack. With a 4 vs 2 advantage, Eno passed to Mercy, who confidently unleashed a three-pointer

Tracy, desperate to thwart the Queens' assault, tried to block Mercy's shot but ended up fouling her. The ball sailed through the air, swishing through the hoop. The crowd erupted into a cacophony of musical cheers and chants as the referee announced the basket and granted an additional free throw for the Queens

Tracy, guilt-stricken at the sudden turn of events, uttered, "A four-point play?"

Aisa, maintaining her composure, quickly encouraged her teammate, wiping the sweat from her face with her kit. "Don't worry about it. Switch gears and get ready for the rebound."

The team responded with a unified "RIGHT!" their voices echoing through the court like a battle cry

Mercy, with a nerve of steel, step forward and scored the resulting free throw, triggering another explosion of music and chanting from the crowd. The Queens' momentum continued to build, as both teams steeled themselves for the trilling battle ahead

As the game continued, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team began their offensive charge led by Vicky. However, the Queens were ready, each player diligently guarding an opponent

Vicky, rhythmically bouncing the ball, acknowledged the Queens' unwavering determination. "I see you guys are serious about this, huh?" she remarked

Chioma, standing her ground, affirmed their resolve: "Don't say I didn't warn you"

In a split second, Vicky tossed the ball high into the air, causing a temporary distraction among the players. Seizing the opportunity, Aanu dashed forward and jumped-up Hannah's lap, propelling herself higher to meet the airborne ball

"Aanu! Over here!" Vicky screamed, strategically positioning herself for a shot

Aanu swiftly passed the ball down to Vicky, who had already assumed her shooting stance in anticipation. The ball landed perfectly in Vicky's hands as she soared through the air, unleashing a three-pointer with flawless precision. The crowd erupted into a deafening cheer as the ball swished cleanly through the hoop, a testament to the Rose Mary High School Team's skill and coordination

As the game resumed, the Queens took control with Chioma leading the charge. The Rose Mary High School Basketball Team struggled to keep up with the Queens' dynamic movements as they changed positions on the court, occasionally running into each other in their pursuit

Vicky, puzzled by their strategy, asked Chioma, "What is this?"

Chioma, remaining mysterious, replied, "Wait, you'll find out soon"

Chioma then tossed the ball high into the air, prompting the Rose Mary High School Team to believe that the pass would go out of bounds. However, Tosin roared as she dashed towards the hoop and leaped into the air with astonishing height, managing to connect with the airborne ball

The Rose Mary High School Team players couldn't believe their eyes.

"Impossible! Just how high can she jump?" Tracy exclaimed

"Are you sure she isn't a bird in human form?" Vicky questioned, astonished

Unable to dunk from such a height, Tosin dropped the ball to the floor.

Believing Tosin had lost control of the ball, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team rushed after the descending ball. However, just before they could grab the ball, Tolu quickly punched the ball towards the hoop, sending it sailing into the hands of the Eno, who had been left unguarded by Hannah

Without hesitation, Eno leaped into the air and slammed it into the hoop, and the gymnasium exploded with deafening musical cheers and applause. The spectators were awestruck by the impeccable teamwork displayed by the Queens

Unfortunately, Tosin's insane high jump resulted in a bad landing, and she incurred an injury. Noticing Tosin's distress, Mrs. Lawal swiftly subbed her out and replaced her with Kevwe to avoid further risks

Eno helped Tosin off the court and whispered reassuringly, "Leave the rest to me"

Tosin, feeling confident in her teammates, nodded and allowed herself to be guided away.

Mrs. Lawal, still concerned, asked as Tosin took her seat on the bench, "I hope you didn't break a limb"

"I don't know, but it hurts really bad" Tosin replied, wincing in pain

Mrs. Lawal instructed Shalom to keep track of the ongoing game while she accompanied Tosin to the treatment room, hoping for the best outcome for her injured player

The game carried on despite Tosin's absence, both teams relentlessly fighting for a spot in the prestigious Christmas Champions Cup. Spectators cheered and roared as the intensity of the game continued to build

Meanwhile, behind the treatment room door, Tosin's screams of pain echoed through the hall as the doctor worked on her injured leg. The sound made everyone's heart sink, fearing the worst for the talented young player

Finally, the doctor finished massaging Tosin's leg, and Mrs. Lawal couldn't hold back her concern any longer. "Doctor, how is she?" she asked

The doctor offered a reassuring smile. "Oh, she's fine. She just needs two days of complete rest, and she'll be back to 100% again"

Relief washed over Mrs. Lawal's face, and she quickly inquired, "That means she'll be available for the final, right?"

With a nod, the doctor replied, "Yes. The final is in three days, so she should be available for the final."

Mrs. Lawal stayed with Tosin in the treatment room for an extra five minutes, offering her support and ensuring her well-being before returning to the court with her.

Upon returning to the court, Mrs. Lawal carefully helped Tosin to sit down, ensuring that the injured player was comfortable. Shalom, who had stepped up as the acting coach during Mrs. Lawal's absence, approached them with concern

"Coach" Shalom called out

"Thank you for standing in my stead. I'm sorry for putting such a heavy burden on your shoulders. I'm also sorry for taking so long in the treatment room." Mrs. Lawal said

"No problem, Coach," Shalom replied with understanding, "How is Tosin's injury?"

"She's fine. It turned out that it wasn't serious. The doctor said she needs rest," Mrs. Lawal explained, the relief evident in her voice

Shalom breathed a sigh of relief as well. "Ah, thank God. I was scared that something similar to three years ago had happened"

"Yeah, I was scared too," Mrs. Lawal agreed, smiling at Tosin before focusing her attention back on the game. "How has the game been?"

"A miracle is occurring here," Shalom replied, a sense of awe in her voice

Mrs. Lawal looked at the scoreboard and was shocked. "What? 84-78 in our favour?

Shalom nodded, a hint of excitement in her tone. "Yeah, ever since Tosin left the court, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team hasn't scored a single point. As a result, we are in control of this game. This is not to say that Tosin was the cause for our struggles against the Rose Mary High School"

"So, what happened?" Mrs. Lawal asked, curious about the sudden shift in their team's performance

"This is the result of the awakening of a certain beast," Shalom revealed

"Wait, you don't mean…" Mrs. Lawal said, already having a clue of who Shalom was talking about

"Yeah, Eno has stopped every attack that the Rose Mary High School has lunched in the last few minutes. Not even the genius of so-called unstoppable ace, Aisa, nor the explosive jumps of Hannah are working against Eno right now. She's practically on fire. When I was in primary school, I heard rumours of a certain player who could defend against a full team. Suddenly, for some unknown reasons, that player started struggling. She was like a beast sleeping in a locked cage. But now, it seems that beast has awakened and has shattered the cage with her bare hands. She is free," Shalom explained

As Shalom finished her explanation, Aisa unleashed a shot. The ball was grazed by Kevwe's fingertip, causing Aisa's irritation. The ball bounced off the rim, prompting a rebounding battle between Hannah and Eno. Hannah jumped first, looking to secure the rebound, but Eno grabbed the ball and started running. She tossed a pass towards Chioma, who then sent it to Tolu. Tolu punched the ball towards the hoop. The ball sailed into Eno's hands, and she slammed it in for an insanely fast alley-oop attack, provoking a deafening musical uproar from the spectators and adding two more points to the Queens' lead

As the clock ticked down to the final five seconds of the game, the Rose Mary High School Basketball Team seized their last opportunity of the game. Aanu skillfully passed the ball to Aisa, who quickly started running as the time counted down to one

Aisa, with her trademark precision and agility, launched a shot from the half-court circle just as the final second hit. However, Eno was alert and determined to protect her team's lead. She jumped up and managed to blocked Aisa's shot as the final buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the game

To everyone's surprise, the ball which had ricocheted off Eno's hand, remained in the air, defying gravity, and eliciting gasps from the spectators. The ball bounced off the rim, much to the spectators' disbelief, and seemed destined to fall to the floor. But in a stunning twist, it somehow found its way back into the hoop, resulting in a mesmerizing swish that left the entire gymnasium in awe

The Queens' victory was sealed at 89-78, ensuring their spot in the conveted Christmas Champions Cup
