Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 32

The soft glow of moonlight filtered through Tosin's window, casting a serene ambiance over her room as she lay on her bed, lost in thought. The day's events weighed heavily on her mind, and she couldn't help but sigh. "In the end, I still couldn't see John today. He wasn't home when I stopped by, even though I skipped the team meeting for him. I suppose I'll just give him some space for now."

As Tosin continued to reflect, she recalled another pressing concern. "My sneakers were ruined today during today's game. I need to find a new pair after Church tomorrow, but it'll be a Sunday-I'm not sure any store will open tomorrow." Despite the potential setback, Tosin resolved to try anyway knowing she couldn't afford to be without a basketball footwear as the playoff final is scheduled to take place in just two days. She was aware that it was an urgent need

As sleep claimed Tosin, her dreams were filled with visions of future battles with Aisa. She couldn't help but smile in her sleep

The following day, Tosin attended Church with her mum, Sade, finding solace in the soothing hymns and uplifting sermons. As the service came to a close, her focus shifted back to her sneaker predicament. With a sense of urgency, Tosin took permission from her mum, rushed home, changed into a different outfit and ventured to the local shopping district, hoping to find an open store despite the unlikelihood on a Sunday

Tosin's sense of urgency to purchase a new pair of basketball sneakers wasn't just about replacing her ruined sneakers, but also about making the most out of her limited free time. With the playoff final looming, she knew she had to prioritize he rest and recovery, as instructed by the doctor at the arena during the game against Rose Mary High School

Purchasing a new pair of sneakers immediately would allow her to focus in her rest and preparation for the big game, rather than wasting precious time searching for sneakers later on. It was a pragmatic decision, driven by her determination to be in top form for the final

As the day progressed, Tosin's unwavering determination to acquire new basketball sneakers proved fruitless. Every store she visited was locked, and her efforts seemed to be in vain. Undeterred, she expanded her search, transversing various local government areas in hopes of finding an open shop. But as the sun slowly descended, casting long shadows across the cityscape, Tosin grew increasingly anxious

"Huh? What time is it?" she muttered as she glanced at her wristwatch. "Oh no! it's already 5:50! I can't believe it's getting so late! I need to hurry"

Throughout her quest, Tosin's worried mother, Sade, called her several times to check on her progress and ensure her safety. Tosin answered each call, doing her best to reassure her mother and maintain a sense of calm

Just as Tosin was about to give up hope, she noticed a store with its lights on, signaling that it was open for business. Overcome with relief and joy, she hurried inside, praying that she would finally find the sneakers she so desperately needed

The storeowner, a middle-aged woman with a kind face, greeted Tosin warmly. "Welcome, my dear! How can I help you?"

Tosin quickly explained her predicament, expressing her urgent need for a pair of basketball sneakers. The storeowner listened sympathetically before admitting, "I'm afraid we don't specialize in athletic footwear, but let's see what we can find"

Together, they searched the shelves. Tosin's heart sank as she scanned the shelves, trying on various sneakers, only to find that none of them fit properly. Her frustration mounted as she cursed her unusually long legs. "None of these sneakers are my size! It's all because of my ridiculously long legs. This is hopeless!"

The store owner sympathized with Tosin's plight. "I'm truly sorry, my dear. I wish I had something that would fit you better"

Tosin, desperate for a solution, asked, "Do you know of any other store where I might have better luck? I need a new pair of basketball sneakers as soon as possible"

The store owner frowned, aware of the challenge Tosin faced, "I must confess, it will quite difficult, especially since it's Sunday and most stores are closed. However, don't lose hope; you may yet find what you are looking for if you keep searching"

Thanking the store owner for her time and kindness, Tosin resumed her quest. As she continued her search, a mysterious voice called out, "Take flight on the court!"

Recognizing the voice, Tosin turned to see the same energetic woman she had encountered a week prior. This time, the woman held a box containing a brand-new pair of basketball sneakers

"Good evening ma," Tosin greeted her politely. "You're the woman from before, right?"

The woman nodded, "Yes, Tosin"

Intrigued by the woman's knowledge of her name and need for a new pair of basketball sneakers, Tosin inquired, "What's your name, ma'am?"

The stranger evaded the question, replying, "Don't worry about my name for now. "You should be focus on your own predicament"

Tosin, conceding the point, admitted, "Yes, I've had no luck finding a new pair of basketball sneakers"

A sly smile spread across the woman's face. "Follow me,"

As they ventured through unfamiliar alleys and side streets, Tosin grew increasingly uneasy. "Ma'am, where are we going?" she asked, trying to mask her apprehension

"Patience, Tosin. You'll find out soon." The mysterious woman replied

They eventually arrived at a secluded street basketball court, hidden from the bustling city. The stranger issued a challenge: "This pair of basketball sneakers are yours if you make 15 shots out of 20." With that, she tossed a basketball towards Tosin"

Stunned, Tosin caught the ball and stared at the woman, her mind racing. Her desperate need for a new pair of basketball sneakers clashed with her uncertainty about this peculiar challenge. Could she trust this enigmatic stranger? What secrets laid behind this mysterious encounter? And could she summon the skill to and focus to succeed in this high-stake game

Tosin found herself torn between the tantalizing prospect of obtaining the desperately needed basketball sneakers and the potential risks of accepting the stranger's challenge. After all, she had been advised to avoid any sporting activities and rest until the playoff final. Weighing her options carefully, Tosin ultimately decided hat the opportunity was too significant to pass up

"Ma'am, I accept your challenge," Tosin declared, her determination shining through

The enigmatic woman smiled, seemingly pleased by Tosin's choice. "Very well, let the challenge begin."

Tosin, eager to protect her recovering leg, inquired, "Is there a chair or wheelchair nearby that I could use during the challenge?"

The stranger, taken aback, questioned, "Why would you need a chair, Tosin?"

Tosin explained her predicament, emphasizing her commitment to minimizing any potential strain on her recovering leg. "I was instructed to avoid sporting activities until the playoff final. However, since I've accepted your challenge, I need to ensure that I don't push myself beyond my limits,"

The woman remained skeptical. "Even so, how do you plan to shoot while seated?"

Tosin, unfazed, revealed one of her secrets, "Don't worry, I'll be fine. During my recovery from my knee injury, I trained while sitting on my wheelchair. I've learned to adapt my shooting technique accordingly." Her confidence and resourcefulness left the stranger momentarily stunned, but soon, a smile spread across her face. It seemed that Tosin's indomitable spirit had further solidified the woman's belief in her choice

As the stranger retrieve a wheel chair for Tosin, she couldn't help but marvel's resilience and dedication. Tosin on the other hand couldn't help but wonder who the wheelchair belonged to. However, she decided to pay it no mind and focus on the challenge

Seated in the wheelchair, Tosin commenced the challenge, her movements revealing a sense of practiced ease. As she continued to shoot, the mysterious woman observed her technique with a growing sense of awe, realizing that Tosin had indeed honed her skills through wheelchair training during her previous recovery. The stranger couldn't help but ponder the true extent of Tosin's untapped potential

With the final shot sinking effortlessly into the hoop, the challenge came to an end. The tally stood at 12 out of 20-an impressive feat considering she did it while sitting, but not quite the agreed-upon benchmark of 15

Surprising Tosin, the woman tossed the box containing the coveted sneakers in her direction. "Here," she said

Tosin reacted with genuine shock. "But I didn't meet the requirements-why are you giving me the sneakers?"

The enigmatic woman explained, "True, you didn't reach the agreed-upon goal, but like I told you before, I've got my eyes on you. Consider this a gift, a show of faith in the incredible athlete I know you will become"

Overwhelmed by the woman's generosity and beliefs in her abilities, Tosin expressed her heartfelt gratitude. "Thank you so much! Your support means more to me than you could ever know"

As Tosin prepare to take her leave, the woman offered her one last enigmatic comment: "I eagerly await the opportunity to witness your transformation as a basketball player. And remember, I'm a devoted fan"

With her new shoes in hand, Tosin hurried home, eager to put an end to her mother's mounting worry. As she navigated the familiar streets, she reflected on the day's trials, acknowledging that although her quest had been fraught with frustration, it had also highlighted the kindness of strangers and her own perseverance in the face of adversity. Although she had embarked on a tough quest to replace her worn out sneakers, Tosin had discovered something far more valuable: the powerful gift of encouragement and faith from an unexpected ally

As Tosin vanished into the encroaching darkness, a male figure emerged from the shadows, approaching the mysterious woman with a question. "Hey, what do you see in that girl?"

Unfazed by his intrusion, the woman retorted, "That's no business of yours"

The man persisted, undeterred by her curt response, "You would have given her the sneakers anyway, regardless of the outcome of the challenge, wouldn't you, Mrs. Parker?"

Mrs. Parker, her identity now revealed, shot back, "I told you to mind your damn business, Mr. Klay!"

Later that evening, Tosin recounted the day's peculiar events to her mother, who initially expressed skepticism about the seemingly serendipitous gift. However, she eventually dismissed her concerns, allowing Tosin to bask in the excitement of her new acquisition

Tosin eagerly opened the box, admiring the pristine red and white Nike sneakers nestled within. Though the colours, didn't align with the Queens' signature pink and white palette, she was grateful for the unexpected blessing. She could hardly contain her anticipation as she envisioned herself wearing them during the final, fueled by a fresh wave of determination and an unbreakable spirit

As Tosin closed the box, she held the sneakers close, treasuring the gift as a symbol of the unwavering belief Mrs. Parker had shown in her potential. With this newfound source of motivation, Tosin prepared to face the challenges ahead, ready to push her limits and prove herself on the court

The Queens convened at the club gymnasium the following day, gathering for their postponed meeting before the morning assembly. As the girls settled into their seats, Mrs. Lawal greeted them warmly, "Good morning, girls!"

"Good morning, Coach," the Queens responded in unison.

"How are you all?" Mrs. Lawal inquired

"We're fine, thank you, ma'am. And you?" the girls chorused

"I'm doing well, thank you, everyone," Mrs. Lawal replied with a smile. "Before we dive into our meeting, Tosin, what happened? You suddenly disappeared without notice"

Tosin stood up, feeling a pang of guilt. "I'm sorry, Coach. I needed to be somewhere, but I should have informed you. I apologize, Coach"

"It's alright, Tosin. Please, take your seat," Mrs. Lawal said, her tone softening

"Thank you, ma'am," Tosin said as she sat down

"Now, back to our discussion. First and foremost, congratulations on securing our spot in the Christmas Champions Cup!" Mrs. Lawal announced, prompting a chorus of cheers from the Queens. "Yes, we've made it to this year's Christmas Champions Cup, but our job isn't finished yet. We still have the final of the playoff to prepare for"

Mercy raised her hand, asking, "Coach, what's the point of the final if we've already qualified for the Christmas Champions Cup?"

Tosin, eager to share her newfound knowledge. "The outcome of the game will determine the strength of the team we will most likely face in our first game of the Christmas Champions Cup. If we win, our first opponent could be strong or weak, depending on the draw. If we lose, we will most certainly face a strong opponent right off the bat"

Mrs. Lawal nodded, impressed. "I'm surprise you know that much, Tosin"

"Aisa told me about it after the game on Saturday" Tosin revealed

"Well, that's not all," Mrs. Lawal continued, her voice commanding the attention of the girls. "The final game in each region will not only dictate the strength of our first opponents but it will also determine the best team in each region with the exception of two region

Kevwe, her curiosity pique, inquired, "Which region are those, Coach?"

Mrs. Lawal elaborated, "It revolves around the finalists from the previous Christmas Champions Cup, so it can change. This year, one of the team from Lagos didn't participate in the playoff. Consequently, we can't gauge if the winner of our regional playoff is better than last year's Christmas Champions Cup finalists. Therefore, whoever wins tomorrow's game, they won't be recognized as the best team in Lagos. The same goes for Abuja, where the defending Champions came from"

Tolu raised her hand, asking, "Coach, why didn't they participate in the playoffs?"

"Because, as finalists, they were granted automatic qualifications," Mrs. Lawal explained, effectively answering Tolu's question. She then glanced at her watch, realizing the time. "Alright, everyone, let's head to the assembly ground now."

As the Queens made their way to the assembly grounds, they were met with a heartwarming surprise. The entire student body and staff of the Charlie Queens Academy cheered in unison, "CONGRATULATIONS!" Holding up a banner that read "Congratulations on securing a spot in the Christmas Champions Cup!" the school celebrated the team's achievement, filling the Queens with a profound sense of pride and camaraderie

Meanwhile, in another part of Lagos, Victoria entered her Coach's office, greeting him respectfully, "Good morning, sir"

The Coach looked up from his paperwork, responding, "Good morning, Victoria. What brings you here?"

"Sir, I'll get straight to the point. Please, sir, I will like to sit out tomorrow's game," Victoria said
