Chapter 25 - The Librarian

"The Librarian? What the hell is that?" Raze asked. He looked up and saw a dark figure coming from above very fast.

"Oh shit." He cursed and turned around, leaping off the platform. The figure slammed into the platform; it was covered in a black mysterious cloak that had some dark energy around it. It looked up with glowing dark eyes through the hood, that was the only part of its face that was shown.

Raze slammed into the stairs; he almost rolled off the side, but he grabbed on with everything that he had and pulled himself back up.

His breath was erratic. He felt like his lungs were about to cave in; the fear of almost falling from that height was immense.

He looked at the creature and it stared back at him.

"What sort of librarian tries to kill?" Raze yelled and started descending faster. The librarian stretched out its hands and a black ball of energy gathered; it fired toward Raze's back. He turned around at the last moment and created a water shield.

Boom.

The black ball of energy slammed into the water and exploded, throwing Raze backward at a stunning speed. He slammed into the stairs, bounced off, and slammed into the ground hard; he skidded back till he hit his shelf.

He groaned in pain, his body screaming a lot. "That thing tried to kill me," he muttered before struggling back up. He sat down on the ground and leaned his back against the shelf.

He looked up, and there the librarian was, floating there. It looked right at him, no emotions, no expression, just a red glow that looked at him.

"There had to be a better, easier way to stop me from going up; you almost killed me, library."

[I didn't try to kill you; User was warned.]

[Has User taken into perspective what "infinite" means?]

[It means there are an infinite number of possibilities of things that could be inside the library.]

"What does that have to do with that freaking thing attacking me and nearly killing me?" Raze said, still watching the librarian, which hadn't moved.

[The librarian exists to stop User from reaching places of the library he is not ready or strong enough for.]

[User must understand that there exist books within the library which merely opening the page alone can condemn User to external pain, or cause the utter destruction of your world.]

"I see," Raze said. He struggled back to his feet. "If that's the case, then I want to use my free pass on any book in the entire library," Raze said.

He had gotten it a few days back and didn't have any plans of using it, but now he wanted to. He wanted to see just how far that pass would allow him to go, and what book exactly he'd get.

[User is allowed.]

With the permission of the library, he started heading for the stairs again. Raze knew that there were a lot of good books in the level where he was allowed, and he was only scratching the surface of what could be learned from the first sections.

But he was an extremely curious being, and what that meant was that he wanted to see just how good it got.

He got on the stairs and looked at the librarian; it didn't move, so he kept climbing. Every step was cautious, not wanting to get blasted back to the beginning.

He climbed up until the point where he would jump to the next platform. The librarian reversed, allowing him to jump.

"I guess it worked," he muttered and leaped onto the platform. He moved to the next stairs and started climbing. The librarian followed behind him quietly, and though it made Raze worried, he didn't do anything.

He kept climbing for minutes, leaping from platform to platform. He looked down and saw the distance that he had come.

"That's a lot," he muttered. He kept going until hours passed; the air around him became extremely thin and it became extremely cold. The weather inside the library had changed; the gravity there was multiple times larger, the books were made with a darker back and had a dangerous feel to them.

Not only were they books, there were certain artifacts locked in glass cases: some were swords, some were staves and crystals.

[User is warned to not go higher; your body will be ripped to shreds.]

The library system warned him. Raze was reluctant; he looked up. There was still so much to go and do up there, but his head was already spinning. His body couldn't handle going higher anymore.

He took a breath and his throat felt like it was frozen.

"I can't go further; I feel like I'm dying already. So this is how vast the library can get, 'infinite' is really big," he muttered.

With no choice, he walked to one of the shelves and began reading the backs of the books. He saw a lot. He saw spells that could shake worlds, cultivation techniques that didn't even exist in this world.

Being limited to choosing only one book made him genuinely sad, but he understood that in time he would finally get to this point.

He looked around and finally spotted one book that pulled his attention. It was no world-shattering spell, nor was it any massive technique.

The name was simple: God's Eye.

He stretched out his hands and grabbed the book; its rough black back rubbed against his palm. He pulled out the book.

[Free use is now completed. Head to the allowed section in two hours or the librarian will take action.]

"Shit." The library didn't even allow him time to read the book. He knew he had to run, because a fall from up here would shatter everything in his body.

He started rushing down, his body screaming in pain and tiredness. He decided to use his Qi; he ran it through his body, it gave him more energy. He bolted down like a cat while the librarian followed.
