I stared at Karl, then at Raizel, then back at Karl. My mind couldn't make sense of it.
A personal attendant, someone who would follow me around all day, watching everything I did, everywhere I went.
My stomach dropped.
Did Raizel know? Had he found out about the hidden library? Was this his way of keeping watch on me?
The timing was too perfect, I'd found that book just hours ago, and now suddenly Raizel shows up with someone to shadow me constantly?
My face must have shown everything I was thinking because Raizel's expression changed, then he looked at Karl. "Leave us for a moment."
Karl bowed and left quickly, closing the door behind him with a soft click that seemed to echo in the sudden silence.
The quiet felt thick and oppressive, Raizel took a step closer, I took a step back, something crossed his face, surprise, maybe pain, but it was gone too fast for me to be certain.
