I'd told myself I wouldn't believe him anymore.
Just a few days ago, standing in my room after he'd left with that pained expression, I'd made a promise to myself. Never again. I wouldn't let Raizel's sudden shows of concern mean anything, wouldn't let myself hope that any of it was genuine.
But now, sitting in the library with afternoon light filtering through the windows, I wasn't so sure anymore.
He was doing it again.
I'd been reading for maybe an hour when I heard footsteps, I didn't look up at first, assuming it was a servant passing through, but then the footsteps stopped.
And I felt eyes on me.
When I finally glanced up, Raizel stood at the end of the aisle, just standing there looking at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.
"I didn't mean to disturb you," he said quietly.
I waited for him to leave, to walk away like he always did, instead, he moved closer and settled into the chair across from mine.
My heart did something stupid in my chest.
