Chapter 58Lily's POV
The room fell into a heavy silence.
I felt the air tighten, felt everyone holding their breath as though they hadn't heard what Joe had just said. As though it might've been a mistake, some misfiring of his damaged memory.
I knew it wasn't. At least, I hoped it wasn't.
But still… I didn't want to believe it either.
Jane blinked once, then twice, as if the words were still echoing in her head. She gave a strained smile, turned to Joe, and said carefully, "I'm sorry… what did you just say?"
He didn't miss a beat. "I said Lily stays with me tonight. Or did I suddenly develop a stutter?"
He sounded like the old Joe once again.
My chest seized for a moment. My eyes darted to Jane once again. Her smile croaked up slightly, but she quickly pasted it back on.
"Babe," she said sweetly, placing a hand on his arm, "maybe you didn't understand. The doctors said I should stay with you. Or better still, we can take you back to the hospital where…"
