Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: New Rules and Old Problems

The modified training schedule that accompanied their enhanced supervision was, in Garrett's words, "aggressively educational." What had been six hours of intensive training was now eight hours of intensive training under direct faculty oversight, with detailed documentation of every technique practiced and every tactical decision made.

"I feel like we're being studied," Marcus observed as they took their lunch break in the Academy dining hall. "Not trained - studied."

"That's because we are being studied," Helena replied, consulting what appeared to be an official Academy memo. "Enhanced supervision includes performance monitoring for 'academic research purposes' and 'security protocol development.'"

Elena looked up from her meal with interest. "What kind of academic research?"

"The kind that involves documenting everything we do and analyzing it for patterns that might be useful for training future Junior Security Assistants." Helena folded the memo carefully. "We're essentially test subjects for improved Academy security education."

"Great," Garrett muttered. "We went from unauthorized adventure enthusiasts to official guinea pigs."

Leo-Raelian had been expecting something like this. Their performance during the security incidents had demonstrated capabilities that Academy officials wanted to understand and potentially replicate. Being studied was the natural consequence of being exceptional.

*Though it's going to make maintaining a low profile significantly more difficult.*

"At least the training itself is excellent," he pointed out. "Even with the documentation requirements, we're learning advanced techniques that most students never see."

"True," Marcus agreed. "Professor Sterling's mathematical combat applications course has been fascinating. I never realized how much tactical advantage you could gain through proper probability calculations."

"And Professor Aldric's countermeasures training is finally letting me experiment with controlled chaotic applications," Elena added enthusiastically. "Under proper supervision, of course."

"Of course," Helena said with a slight smile. "Though I notice your experiments are still producing unexpected explosions."

"Much smaller explosions! And they're scientifically informative explosions!"

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of David Chen, who looked considerably better than he had immediately after his kidnapping ordeal but still carried himself with the wariness of someone who'd experienced serious danger.

"Mind if I join you?" he asked. "I wanted to thank you all personally for what you did."

"Of course," Leo-Raelian replied, making room at their table. "How are you feeling?"

"Better. The medical wing says the sedatives they used won't have any lasting effects." David settled into the empty chair. "Though I'm told I missed some interesting conversations while unconscious."

"Mostly bureaucratic excitement," Helena said diplomatically. "Academy administration addressing security protocols and family concerns."

"I heard about the inquiry. My father was grateful that Academy officials took the threat seriously." David paused. "He also wanted me to express his family's appreciation for your intervention. We understand the risks you took."

*Political gratitude from Church administration families. That could be useful if future complications involve religious politics.*

"We're just glad you're safe," Marcus said. "Though hopefully the enhanced security protocols will prevent similar incidents."

"About that," David said quietly. "There's something you should know. The infiltrators who targeted me weren't working independently. My father's sources suggest they were part of a larger organization with political objectives beyond simple kidnapping."

Leo-Raelian felt his attention sharpen. "What kind of political objectives?"

"Disrupting Church-kingdom relations by creating incidents that could be blamed on inadequate Academy security or negligent noble family policies." David looked around the table. "Your intervention prevented what could have become a significant political crisis."

*So we didn't just prevent a kidnapping - we prevented a deliberate attempt to destabilize kingdom politics. That explains why the inquiry was so thorough and why we're being studied so carefully.*

"Are there likely to be additional attempts?" Helena asked.

"My father thinks so. Different targets, different methods, but the same underlying objective of creating political instability through Academy-related incidents."

Elena leaned forward with interest. "That suggests we should expect more security situations requiring rapid response and creative problem-solving."

"Elena," Garrett said weakly, "please don't sound so excited about people trying to create political crises."

"I'm excited about opportunities to apply our training to real-world situations! It's much more interesting than theoretical exercises."

"Elena has a point," Helena said thoughtfully. "If David's information is correct, our enhanced training might be specifically preparing us for future operations against this organization."

*Which would explain why Academy officials are being so thorough about documenting our capabilities and improving our techniques. They're not just studying us - they're preparing us for a larger campaign.*

"Has anyone mentioned this to Professor Blackthorne or the other instructors?" Leo-Raelian asked.

"My father has been coordinating with Academy security," David replied. "Though they're being careful about operational details. Enhanced supervision includes information security protocols."

*Translation: they're not telling us everything about what they're planning, but they are preparing us for whatever it is.*

As lunch ended and they prepared for afternoon training sessions, Leo-Raelian considered the implications of David's information. Their involvement in Academy security had started as accidental discovery of isolated threats, but was apparently evolving into preparation for systematic opposition to an organized political conspiracy.

*On one hand, that's much more dangerous and complicated than random security incidents. On the other hand, it's exactly the kind of large-scale threat that Academy resources and training are designed to handle.*

*Plus, if we're being specifically prepared for operations against this organization, we'll have professional support and planning rather than improvised responses to emergency situations.*

"You know," he said to his teammates as they walked toward the training facility, "being official Academy security assets with enhanced supervision and advanced training might actually be safer than stumbling into dangerous situations as amateur investigators."

"Safer?" Garrett asked hopefully.

"More professional backup, better equipment, improved techniques, and strategic planning instead of tactical improvisation."

"That does sound safer," Marcus agreed.

"It also sounds like we're transitioning from students who occasionally help with security issues to security operatives who occasionally attend classes," Helena observed.

"Is that good or bad?" Elena asked.

"It's probably inevitable," Leo-Raelian replied. "Given our track record and the political situation David described."

As they entered the training facility where Sergeant Torres was waiting with what appeared to be new and more challenging equipment, Leo-Raelian reflected on how their Academy experience continued to evolve in directions he hadn't anticipated.

*Started with trying to avoid the political intrigue that was supposed to get me killed. Now I'm officially part of Academy efforts to prevent political instability.*

*Though to be fair, being part of the solution is probably safer than being an incidental victim of the problem.*

*Growth through effort,* he reminded himself. *And through accepting that sometimes growth means becoming something different than what you originally planned.*

It was definitely going to be an interesting educational experience.
