Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Research and Revelations

The Merchant Quarter branch library was nothing like the imposing grandeur of the main Academy library. Instead of towering shelves and intimidating magical architecture, it felt like a comfortable reading room that happened to contain some of the kingdom's most sensitive historical documents.

"This is much more pleasant than I expected," Marcus commented as they approached the main desk. "Less 'repository of dangerous knowledge' and more 'cozy academic retreat.'"

The branch librarian, Mrs. Halloway, was a middle-aged woman with the kind of organized efficiency that suggested she knew exactly where every book was located and who had accessed it recently.

"Academy students!" she said with genuine pleasure. "How wonderful. We don't get many researchers from the main campus. What brings you to our little collection?"

Helena stepped forward with her practiced diplomatic smile. "We're conducting research on historical Church-kingdom cooperation in educational policy development. Professor Aldric suggested your historical archives would have materials not available in the main library."

"Oh yes, we have excellent collections on political education history. Though some of the materials you'll need are in our restricted access section." Mrs. Halloway pulled out a large ledger. "I'll need to see your authorization documents and record your research topics for our access logs."

As they provided their documentation and settled into the library's research area, Leo-Raelian began scanning for signs of the unauthorized access that had prompted their mission. The restricted materials section was clearly marked and appeared to have proper security protocols, but the system relied heavily on trust and record-keeping rather than magical barriers.

*Easy enough to circumvent if someone knew what they were looking for and had basic knowledge of library procedures.*

Elena had already requested her first batch of materials and was examining them with genuine academic interest. "These Church educational policy documents are fascinating! Did you know the Academy was originally founded as a joint Church-kingdom initiative to prevent magical education from becoming politically destabilizing?"

"That's... actually relevant to current events," Helena observed quietly.

"History repeating itself," Marcus agreed. "Though hopefully with better outcomes this time."

Leo-Raelian was studying the access logs Mrs. Halloway had provided, looking for patterns that might indicate unauthorized research. Several entries over the past two weeks showed unusual access times and research topics that didn't match typical academic patterns.

"Helena," he said quietly, "look at these entries. Someone has been accessing materials on Academy security protocols and Church administration personnel records. Always during evening hours when there would be minimal supervision."

Helena reviewed the log entries with growing concern. "These research topics aren't random. Someone was gathering intelligence on specific people and procedures."

"Should we tell Mrs. Halloway?" Garrett asked in a whisper.

"Not yet. We need more evidence before alerting library staff, and we should check whether any materials are actually missing rather than just accessed."

They spent the next hour conducting legitimate research while discreetly investigating signs of security breaches. Elena's enthusiasm for historical documents provided excellent cover for examining restricted materials, while Marcus's methodical approach helped identify gaps in the collection.

*System activation.*

For the first time in weeks, Leo-Raelian felt the familiar mental chime as his system provided analysis:

*Hostile surveillance. Someone is watching us while we investigate them.*

Leo-Raelian casually looked around the library, trying to identify potential threats without appearing suspicious. Through the main window, he caught sight of a figure across the street who seemed to be paying unusual attention to the library entrance.

*Professional observation post. We're definitely investigating something that someone wants to protect.*

"Helena," he said quietly while maintaining focus on his research materials, "I think we have company. External observation, probably professional."

Helena's training immediately showed as she continued reading while processing the threat information. "How many?"

"At least one confirmed, possibly more. We should assume our investigation has been noticed."

"Options?"

"Continue research while documenting everything we find. If they're watching us, it means we're close to discovering something important."

Marcus had overheard their quiet conversation and was now contributing his own observations. "I found evidence that several key documents are missing from the restricted collection. Specifically, detailed Academy security protocols and current Church administration personnel files."

"Missing or relocated?" Helena asked.

"Missing. The catalog indicates they should be here, but the actual materials are gone. And the access logs don't show authorized removals."

Elena looked up from her historical research with excitement. "And I found references to documents that should exist but aren't in the catalog at all. Someone has been systematically removing materials that would be useful for planning operations against Academy or Church targets."

*So we have confirmed intelligence theft, hostile surveillance, and missing materials that could enable attacks on Academy students or Church officials. This mission just became much more serious.*

"Time for our first check-in," Leo-Raelian announced, pulling out his Academy communication crystal.

The check-in with Professor Blackthorne was brief but informative. Their findings confirmed Academy suspicions about systematic intelligence gathering, and the hostile surveillance indicated they were investigating active operations rather than historical security breaches.

"Continue your research," Professor Blackthorne's voice came through the crystal quietly. "Document everything you find, but maintain your cover. Academy security is aware of your situation and will provide support if needed."

"Should we attempt to identify the surveillance team?" Helena asked.

"Negative. Intelligence gathering takes priority over tactical engagement. Your safety is more important than immediate apprehension of hostiles."

As they returned to their research with heightened awareness of their situation, Leo-Raelian reflected on how different this mission felt compared to their previous adventures. Professional planning, clear objectives, constant support, and systematic investigation rather than emergency improvisation.

*Though we're still apparently investigating people who don't want to be investigated, which means we're probably going to face some kind of confrontation eventually.*

"You know," Garrett said quietly as he helped document missing materials, "this feels much more manageable than our usual adventures. Even with hostile surveillance."

"That's because we have proper training and support this time," Marcus replied. "Professional preparation makes dangerous situations much less terrifying."

"Plus," Elena added with characteristic optimism, "we're gathering valuable intelligence that will help Academy security prevent future attacks. This is exactly the kind of meaningful work I hoped we'd be doing."

*Elena's right. We're actually making a real contribution to Academy security rather than just stumbling into situations and hoping for the best.*

As their research continued and they documented evidence of systematic intelligence theft, Leo-Raelian felt a sense of satisfaction about their professional development. They were functioning as competent intelligence operatives now, not just lucky amateur investigators.

*Growth through effort,* he reminded himself. *And through accepting increasing responsibility as capabilities develop.*

Though the hostile surveillance suggested their capabilities were about to be tested more seriously than their training exercises had prepared them for.

It was definitely going to be an educational afternoon.
