Chapter 8 - Hiding in Plain Sight

So, from now on, he must hide himself.

This desert was an unknown place.

Even though he was once a C-class member of the SCP, he didn't know where this desert was.

Therefore, his first priority was to get out of this desert.

He needed to figure out his location before he could make his next move.

In the desert, yellow sand stretched as far as the eye could see, and sandstorms arose from time to time.

Fortunately, his body was now much stronger, and he possessed immortal power.

If an ordinary person walked in such a desert, they would die within days.

But he was different.

He had immortal power; he could persist for several days even without food or water.

There were scorpions in the desert.

When he was hungry, he caught them and ate them raw.

However, the most terrible thing was the lack of water.

It had been three days.

Even with immortal power, going three days without water was tormenting.

He could feel his body weakening.

Even though the immortal power was constantly repairing his body, it also depended on his body being relatively healthy and intact.

If his bodily functions weakened, the power of his immortality would also fade until it disappeared.

Therefore, he had to find a water source as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Luther returned to SCP headquarters by helicopter.

He was summoned immediately.

What awaited him would be severe punishment.

Yet, his eyes were full of confidence.

He wasn't panicked about the impending punishment. On the contrary, he walked confidently into an office.

The office was very quiet.

A man in a suit leaned back in his chair, his back to Luther.

He was listening to Luther's explanation.

Luther spoke excitedly.

Crack!

Suddenly, the man in the suit broke the armrest of his chair. His body trembled.

"What you're saying is true?!"

"Absolutely true! Just give me the resources, and I can definitely find a way for ordinary people to gain anomalous abilities. Please believe me!" Luther said loudly.

He provided details and mentioned that all the task force soldiers had witnessed it.

He told the seated man about the anomaly that had occurred with Luican.

The man seemed very excited.

"Excellent. I will authorize more project resources for you. Handle this matter!"

The man finally spoke.

"Yes, sir!"

Luther was thrilled.

He knew he had turned misfortune into fortune!

He had finally obtained more project resources!

Luther walked out of the office, brimming with confidence.

Not only had he gained more resources, but his status and position within the SCP had also risen significantly.

"In the future, I will join the O5 Council!"

Luther was full of ambition.

Now, with his new standing, he aimed to enter the core O5 Council of the SCP!

He wanted full authority to manage the projects focused on humans gaining anomalous abilities.

In his heart, he always felt that Luican wasn't dead.

"Search carefully for me. I want to see him, dead or alive. The explosion would have left bone fragments. Bring them back to me!" Luther said calmly to Wilder beside him.

Wilder had been following him. This time, their fortunes had changed, and their status had risen greatly.

Naturally, Wilder still followed him.

"Yes, sir!" Wilder said loudly.

Afterwards, Wilder led a team of task force soldiers back into the desert.

Although SCP professionals had already searched the desert and found nothing, Luther wanted definitive proof of Luican's death.

He felt that Luican's sudden acquisition of anomalous abilities was a miracle.

Miracles couldn't be so brief.

Perhaps Luican had survived.

If they found Luican, the project he was responsible for would be a success.

"I hope you are alive..." Luther stood on the balcony, looking down at the building below.

He had an air of someone standing atop a mountain, looking down on all others.

He enjoyed this feeling of supremacy.

This was his lifelong pursuit; his goal was to reach an even higher peak!

In the desert, Luican had been walking for five days.

Five days without water.

He was almost dying of thirst.

Even the immortal power felt weak and ineffective.

During these five days, he occasionally saw helicopters flying in the sky.

Whenever he saw one, he would burrow into the yellow sand to hide.

Fortunately, no helicopter had spotted him.

But he couldn't hold on much longer.

He couldn't endure prolonged lack of food and water.

One day, a helicopter flew over his head.

A crazy idea popped into his mind.

This desert belonged to the SCP; the helicopter in the sky was naturally SCP personnel.

Although the idea was insane, he had to try it.

So, he stood up.

He shouted loudly and leaped out of the desert.

After his body was enhanced, he could jump several meters high easily.

Though weak, he put all his strength into the jump.

He leaped five meters high, springing up in the desert like a coil.

The people in the helicopter spotted him immediately.

"Anomaly! Alert!"

The SCP personnel in the helicopter instantly grew tense.

Ordinary people couldn't jump five meters high. Even though Luican looked human, they had already classified him as an anomaly.

Suddenly, the helicopter descended rapidly.

It hovered ten meters above the ground.

Several gun barrels aimed at Luican.

"Don't shoot! I'm a tamed anomaly of the SCP!" Luican crouched on the desert ground, pretending to surrender.

"Our anomaly?" The SCP personnel in the helicopter stared at Luican.

The SCP did adopt many anomalies, controlling them for their own use.

This desert belonged to the SCP. Aside from SCP personnel, there should be no one else here—not even anomalies!

So, they were mostly convinced.

"How did you get here?"

"How did you survive?" the SCP personnel in the helicopter shouted, their gun barrels still trained on him.

"I am a tamed humanoid anomaly. I escaped just before the base exploded!" Luican shouted.

"So you escaped from the base!" The SCP personnel nodded in understanding.

"Wait, we need to verify your identity!" They needed to check if a tamed humanoid anomaly matching Luican's description existed in the base's records.

Luican crouched on the desert sand.

His claimed identity as a humanoid anomaly naturally didn't exist.

These people would soon discover he wasn't an SCP-tamed anomaly.

So, he had to act.

"Can you give me some water? I'm dying of thirst!" Luican shouted.

"Here!" A bottle of water was dropped from the helicopter.

"Thank you!" Luican took the water and drank it in one gulp.

After drinking, the fatigue in his body vanished instantly.
