I'm staring at the tv, Mackenzie is watching Frozen but nothing really comes in. I'm totally pulled back into my own thoughts. Afther what feels like forever I hear my phone buzzing. I jump up and answer the phone. "Heyyy girl! What time do you want me to come over??" I hear Madison on the other side. I sigh "I- umm I think its not the best idea for you to come.." "wait what? We were going to plan your party! And I want to see that angel!". I don't know what to say "sorry-". "What is going on Claire?" she askes worried. "Have you seen the news?" I ask her. "You know I don't watch the news." I didn't have the guts to say it. "Maybe you should" and with that I hung up the phone. What did I need to do?
It's late and I haven't heard anything yet. I decide to take Kenzie upstairs for a bath before getting her into bed. As usual she askes me to sit with her. So she is laying in her crib while holding my hand. Within 10 minutes she is out. I slowly wiggle my fingers out of her little hand and walk outside. Standing in the hallway I hear my phone buzzing downstairs. I run off the stairs and grab my phone. "Claire" I say. "Hello, sorry for getting back to you so late" I hear a woman say, it's not the same woman as this morning. "Our people have been busy today, and unfortunately we were able to link 2 bodies to Michael and Georgia Evans. I'm sorry, but they past away". The words stick in my head. They are dead. They are really dead. I leave my phone on the kitchen counter and walk upstairs, I look into the dark room. Seeing Mackenzie laying there so innocent and calm. She doesn't know her parents aren't coming to pick her up. She has done nothing to deserve a life without them. And I don't have the heart to tell her.
