Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Fruit Vendors

RIIIIIINNGGG!!!

It's finally over.

How long have I been here?

6 years?

So I'm literally 12 years old right now.

Times moves so fast.

Good thing I don't have anything to do today.

For once, I didn't have to rush off to help my mom at the market or get back to the village for chores.

Gosh, good thing I won't have to meet with her today.

That self-centered slut.

"Yo, Lukas! Are you coming?"

"Yeah!"

I quickly grabbed all of my school equipment into my satchel and ran to my friends.

"Do we really need to bring him along? He never goes out with us." Wesley said.

"I mean…He does help his village with farming whilst we're just playing in the streets." Gideon replied.

"He does more meaningful things than you. I mean weren't you complaining that your parents were asking you for help carrying some few items?" Tomas said.

Wesley scoffs it off like a pig.

"So what were you guys talking about again yesterday?"

"We said we were going to the train yard today to see the new steam locomotive and whilst going there.

we thought we could go through the shopping district and also go to the factory next to the yard." Wesley said.

"What's so interesting about a train?" I said wondering why kids these days are so interested in these things,

"Um, because it's nothing like we've ever seen before.

This train can move 100 km per hour! That's the fastest a train has ever reached these years.

It even has the superheated steam which makes it stronger and faster.

It's got four big driving wheels on each side and a huge boiler, so it looks like a steel beast breathing smoke.

It's also a luxury express where people with monocles and canes ride on.

It's the state of the art train which no other country has ever seen before!" Gideon said like a

dog being told a good boy.

"Huh."

"What do you mean Huh.

Do you know how exciting this is!?"

"Yes." I didn't.

"Well what's with that voice?

You obviously don't sound excited." Gideon said whilst pointing a finger at me.

"No I don't." I lied like a rat.

"Sure." Whilst he squinted his eyes gazing upon my face.

I got weirded out and tried to not look at him.

Gazing upon a wall.

"Alright guys, no complaining.

We've got an iron beast to see!" Tomas said breaking up our fight.

"Yeah, typical for a person like you." Wesley said whilst having a smug smile.

Tomas snapped his neck looking directly as Wesley with those menacing eyes.

Wesley looked away trying not to look at him.

"How about we actually go there then stay here and argue?" I said, trying to break the ice.

Everyone looked at each other before nodding.

"Great! Now let's go."

Well I don't have anything else to do anyway so why not go there to see this train.

We ran through the hallway and soon reached the front entrance.

"Catch me if you can." Wesley shouted, giving us a middle finger and dashed off.

"Oh bet." Tomas shouted in his enthusiastic voice.

I followed behind him but I looked back to see Gideon lacking behind.

"Can't you run any faster?"

"Sorry." He was huffing like he has asthma and needed an inhaler.

"I don't do lots of running."

"Well you better get used to it." I responded before continuing forth.

It was as if I was running like the wind.

Sweeping through the streets.

My body felt light as the air as my legs moved on their own.

Tomas and Wesley were getting farther and farther away.

Running past many carriages and people within.

Gideon lacked behind but I slowed down my pace to follow me whilst running fast enough to not lose my direction while following Tomas.

The streets were still filled with horse shit but it seems that people were putting effort into removing it.

A marked improvement from the total filth of a few months ago, but still a far cry from the clean asphalt of my old world.

There were a lot of people out today.

All were following the same direction.

Off in the distance, people with carts were standing on the side of the road.

As I got closer and closer.

More and more people with the same cart appeared.

The roads were filled with smells.

Fresh bread, cooked food, horse manure, fruits and vegetables.

The vendors set up wooden crates and barrels along the sidewalk or curb.

"Apples, oranges, grapes!" They yelled, echoing through the throng.

Most individuals were carrying umbrellas.

I guess there wasn't any form of sunscreen back then.

I was finally in the middle of the streets surrounded by a huge crowd of people.

I turned right to see Wesley and Tomas crouching down beside the carts like two street urchins from a penny dreadful, about to swipe a loaf of bread.

"I…hate…running." Wheezing like a asthmatic kid needing an inhaler.

"Don't worry, you're far from getting bronchial."

"What?" Still having an asthma attack.

"Nothing."

"Have you seen those two?"

I looked at the vendor where they were previously.

They were gone.

Almost as if the horde had swallowed them whole.

"They're gone. Do you know where the train yard is?"

"Yeah I do, we don't really need them to find our way."

"Well lead the way!"

My hands smacked his back trying to man him up.

It just made his asthma worse.

Almost as if he was about to cough up blood.

"Please stop it."

I tailed behind him while he was passing through the mob.

Bumping through multiple adults my way.

"Guys!" Gideon yelled out.

Tomas and Wesley were carrying numerous breads in their forearms.

"Oh hey guys." Tomas's voice muffled from the loaf in his mouth.

"Tsk, took you two long enough." whilst Wesley was holding a bread.

"You two were way too fast, I couldn't keep up. Please run slow next time." with Gideon's hands together.

My hands immediately snatched the piece of bread off of Wesley's palm like an average British man stealing your phone.

He looked at me with dead eyes telling me to mind my own business before holding another piece.

I snatched it again.

"Okay, ask dude. It's rude to steal." Wesley yelled.

"Ironic."
