CHAPTER ONE::THE UNMARKED LIFE
Ella trudged through the muddy streets of the Lower District, her worn leather boots sinking into the mire. The air reeked of rotting garbage and smoke from the nearby factories. She covered her nose with her sleeve, a habit formed from years of living in this part of town.
As she walked, Ella's gaze drifted toward the towering spires of the Upper District, where the Gifted nobles resided. Their grand estates and glittering towers seemed to mock her, a constant reminder of the social chasm between the haves and have-nots.
Ella's life was a never-ending struggle. She worked as an apprentice to the local baker, rising before dawn to knead dough and haul heavy trays. Her wages barely covered her rent and meager meals. Despite the hardships, Ella held onto her dreams: to one day open her own bakery, to create sweet treats that brought joy to the Lower District's residents.
As she approached the bakery, the sweet aroma of freshly baked bread wafted out, enticing passersby. Ella's stomach growled, reminding her she hadn't eaten breakfast. She quickened her pace, eager to start her chores.
Inside the bakery, the warmth and light enveloped her like a hug. Master Baker Thompson, a gruff but kind man, handed her a tray of piping-hot pastries. "Good morning, Ella! Get these out to the customers, pronto!"
Ella smiled, her exhaustion momentarily forgotten. She expertly arranged the pastries on the display shelves, her hands moving with practiced ease. The morning rush brought a flurry of activity, with locals and travelers alike clamoring for fresh bread and sweet treats.
As the sun climbed higher, Ella snatched a moment to rest her feet and take a bite of stale bread. She sat on a crate outside, watching the bustling market. A group of Gifted nobles rode by, their finery and haughty expressions a stark contrast to the Lower District's rough-around-the-edges residents.
Ella's thoughts turned to the rumors circulating about the Council of Gifted. Some said they were searching for someone with...unusual abilities. Others whispered about dark magic and ancient prophecies. Ella dismissed the gossip, focusing on her work and the simple pleasures in life.
The bakery's door swung open, and Master Thompson called out, "Ella, we've got a special order for the Lord's estate! Get the carriage ready, and don't be late!"
Ella's heart sank. Delivering to the Upper District meant navigating the nobles' condescending attitudes and strict rules. Still, the extra pay was welcome, so she set to work preparing the carriage and selecting the finest pastries.
As she finished loading the carriage, Ella felt a strange tingling sensation in her fingers. It was as if the air around her was charged with electricity. She shook off the feeling, attributing it to the approaching storm. The wind picked up, carrying the scent of ozone and damp earth.
With a final check of the carriage, Ella climbed aboard and urged the horses forward. The ride to the Upper District would take about an hour. She focused on the road ahead, pushing aside the unease growing in her chest. Little did she know, her life was about to take a dramatic turn...
This chapter sets the stage for Ella's life as an Unmarked, showcasing her struggles and dreams. We've introduced the fantasy world, the social divide, and hints of magic. The tingling sensation in her fingers might be a clue to her developing abilities.
