Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: First Meeting

Hushed by her sister, the girl immediately closed her mouth, then shot Le Zhengling a defiant glare.

My fault? Le Zhengling raised an eyebrow.

"I'm so sorry. Aoko is just a little excited. She's not usually like this," the older sister's sincere smile made Le Zhengling swallow the words he was about to say.

Then he remembered what he had just heard. Aozaki + Aoko. What did that equal?

Miss Blue. The walking human emoji—no, the Human Rocket Launcher. The Fifth Magician—Aoko Aozaki!

And who was the one she called 'sister'? There could only be one person! The Grand Puppeteer, Touko Aozaki!

The two sisters who were a force to be reckoned with, one of the most powerful combinations in the Nasuverse!

As these thoughts raced through his mind, his gaze on them became fervent, his heart filled with excitement. Although their greatest achievements were still in the future, he knew what was to come.

Among them, Touko Aozaki could be his lifeline. If he could get her to make him a healthy replacement heart, wouldn't he be saved?

But as he thought of this, he realized the biggest flaw in his plan: they needed time to grow into their powers. And time was what he lacked the most. The ticking time bomb in his chest could go off at any moment.

The Aozaki sisters looked at the person sitting next to them, both thinking the same thing: this person was strange.

After all, if a stranger suddenly starts staring at you with shining eyes, their expression shifting from excitement to gloom, then to struggle, and finally to utter despair, that person either has a few screws loose or is mentally ill.

Thinking this, Aoko's hostility towards him subsided. She patted Le Zhengling's shoulder and said with pity, "Don't lose hope. Japanese medicine is so advanced now, your illness can be cured." She was thinking of how good Japanese psychiatrists were.

Touko, who had followed Aoko's train of thought, covered her sister's mouth and gave Le Zhengling another apologetic smile.

Le Zhengling, on the other hand, was completely baffled. How did Aoko Aozaki know about his physical condition?

He looked at Aoko with confusion and asked, "I don't think modern medicine has advanced enough to save me yet. There might be hope in about twenty years, and the technology would probably be from abroad, right?"

He was talking about a fully transplantable artificial heart.

Aoko, her mouth covered, widened her eyes in shock. Did he just read my mind?

Touko, the only one not in on the confusion, was amazed that this conversation was even happening. But, being intelligent, she guessed they were likely talking about two different things, a complete misunderstanding. She didn't feel the need to point it out, though—she found it quite amusing.

And so, the three of them fell silent.

The Aozaki sisters: the older one didn't want to interact with ordinary people, and the younger one, having been told by her sister that she had been a bother, felt too embarrassed to speak again after apologizing.

Le Zhengling, realizing they couldn't help him right now, wanted to build a good relationship but found the atmosphere too awkward to say anything.

In the end, the three went back to their own things. Aoko whispered to Touko, and Le Zhengling reopened his book for the third time.

The train stopped again, and another wave of people got on. The three had grown accustomed to each other's presence. Le Zhengling read his book quietly, exuding a unique aura of tranquility and detachment.

It was a quality that made him seem separate from the world, as if he existed in his own self-contained space.

This aura made Touko steal a few more glances at him. She was surprised to find such a quality in an ordinary person.

To be groomed as the successor to the Magician, Touko lived separately from her sister. Aoko lived with their parents, while Touko lived in their grandfather's workshop deep in the mountains. Even at the young age of ten, countless magi from prestigious families had come to visit her.

It could be said that besides her family, Le Zhengling was the first normal person she had interacted with.

The reason she was out today was because she had promised to hang out with Aoko. But she hadn't expected Aoko to drag her to a place she had never been before, instead of their usual strolls around Misaki Town.

Led by Aoko, she had truly gone out into the world.

For the first time, she walked on unfamiliar streets, rode a train, and saw so many people. It was also the first time she had actively spoken to a strange, ordinary person. Everything today felt special.

And the ordinary person she had met was quite interesting. The aura he exuded now felt more and more comforting the longer she observed it. It even seemed to infect her, bringing a sense of peace to her own heart.

As she was savoring this feeling, Aoko suddenly spoke up, "Hey you, it's a holiday, why are you still reading? If you're out to have fun, you should put everything aside and just have fun!"

Startled, Touko snapped back to reality. "Aoko!" Her tone carried an unconscious hint of anger because Le Zhengling's unique aura had been shattered by Aoko's words.

"The world is so beautiful, yet you are so irritable..." Interrupted again, Le Zhengling shot Aoko an annoyed look.

"What did you say! You look like a kid, so stop acting all profound! I hate people who pretend like that!" Aoko, now angry, snatched the book from his hands like a petulant child.

"What is... what? Sister, how do you read these two kanji?" Aoko looked at the title of the book she had snatched and realized she didn't recognize two of the characters. She turned to Touko and asked.

"It's Ningen Shikkaku (No Longer Human), by Osamu Dazai," Touko, being a prodigy, possessed the necessary knowledge, despite her lack of worldly experience. In fact, her knowledge far surpassed that of an average person.

"Is this book interesting?" Aoko continued to ask.

"I haven't read it," Touko replied with a troubled expression, then took the pocket-sized book and started looking through it.

So, what about my opinion? Seeing the two sisters casually take his book and start their own conversation, Le Zhengling was flabbergasted. He could understand Aoko, but Touko, weren't you ignoring me a bit too much?

But on second thought, he didn't find it that strange. Both sisters were quite self-centered, they just expressed it differently.

Slightly dejected, Le Zhengling didn't notice the sly glint in Aoko Aozaki's eyes. She had done it on purpose, to get her sister to interact with other things.

Born into the Aozaki family of magi, although she wasn't the successor yet, she knew what magi were like. So, whenever she had the chance, she would go find Touko, hoping to prevent her from turning into a cold, heartless monster.

This trip was an operation she had been planning for a long time. The main goal was to let her sister interact with ordinary people. She hadn't expected to see someone who caught her eye right after getting on the train. After a little test, she felt he was perfect, which was why she was being so mischievous.
