Fifteen minutes ago, the train stopped at a station. Among the boarding crowd was a man approaching forty. His thinning hair spoke of a stressful life, and his short, gaunt frame suggested chronic malnutrition. As soon as he got on the train, his shifty eyes scanned the surroundings.
When his gaze swept over Le Zhengling's seat, a lecherous glint flashed in his narrow eyes. He quickly walked over and sat down next to him.
Since the car wasn't very crowded at this time, the man didn't dare to make any strange moves yet, merely stealing glances at his chosen target from time to time.
The person sitting next to him, Le Zhengling, was the most perfect target he had encountered in a long time. Years of experience as a chikan told him this was a lone traveler with no companions nearby—the easiest type to prey on.
Looking at the lustrous long hair, the snow-white skin untouched by the sun, and the still-developing, youthful body, and especially that unique aura that set him apart from everyone else, the man couldn't help but swallow, his breathing becoming a little heavier.
The train passed station after station, and the number of people in the car gradually increased. The mixture of conversations and breathing sounds created a cacophony of noise, masking other sounds.
After two more stops, the car was packed shoulder to shoulder. People without seats stood holding onto the hand rings, forming a wall of bodies. Their disorganized stances blocked most people's line of sight, creating the perfect environment for those with ulterior motives.
After assessing the situation, the chikan placed his hand on his own thigh. Then, with the train's vibrations, his hand seemingly unintentionally slid towards Le Zhengling.
In truth, Le Zhengling had been on alert since the moment this man sat next to him. After all, he was living his second life and had seen all sorts of anime and manga in his previous one. In every one of them, the train was a frequently featured mode of transport, and the events that happened on them were always the same few things.
When this man sat down next to him, he had specifically noted the low passenger density in the car at the time. He immediately knew what the man was up to. There was a whole row of empty seats, yet he chose to sit right next to him. If not for some ulterior motive, would a normal person do that?
He sighed inwardly at his bad luck but didn't consider moving. Wouldn't that be admitting defeat?
He kept a part of his attention on the man's every move. When the man intentionally-but-not-intentionally made his move, Le Zhengling also pretended to naturally put down his book. But it seemed he used a bit too much force, and the hard spine of the book slammed onto the back of the man's hand.
"Ow!" The man cried out in pain as the sharp corner of the spine hit his hand, drawing the attention of the other passengers.
The guilty man was about to play the victim, but when he saw the faint, mocking smile on Le Zhengling's face and his hand reaching into his small bag, he immediately shut his mouth. He lamented inwardly, thinking he had found a simple Little Red Riding Hood, only to realize it was the Butcher of Little Red Riding Hood!
Although Japanese women of this era didn't have the habit of carrying pepper spray (it only became popular in Japan between 1995 and 2000), Le Zhengling always carried homemade pepper water with him. If the man had made another move, he wouldn't have minded showing him what it feels like to be in tears.
Having been completely seen through, the man's expression was a sight to behold. The other passengers, seeing the looks on both their faces, all seemed to have a moment of realization.
Feeling the scornful and condemning gazes of those around him, the man couldn't bear it. He quickly stood up and disappeared into the crowded car, either getting off or moving to another car to find a new target.
Having successfully escaped the ordeal, Le Zhengling opened his book again. Just as he was about to continue reading, a clear, energetic voice called out, "Sister, sister! Quick, come over here, there's a seat!"
Le Zhengling looked towards the voice and saw a girl with long chestnut hair squeezing out of the crowd, pulling someone else behind her.
With her cheerful cry, she pulled the other person out of the packed crowd.
Looking at the two girls, Le Zhengling felt they looked familiar, but he couldn't quite place them. Before he could figure it out, the girl had already walked up to him and asked bluntly, "Hey, is anyone sitting here?"
Hearing such a direct way of speaking, Le Zhengling wasn't angry. Instead, he found it quite interesting. Normal Japanese people were usually very polite to strangers, but this girl was remarkably straightforward, and there was no malice in her teal eyes.
He looked at this interesting girl, shook his head to indicate the seat was empty, and then turned his gaze to the person behind her, who looked rather troubled.
If the one who spoke was a girl, then this one was a young lady.
Unlike her sister, this one had long black hair, parted on the right, revealing a smooth forehead. Her bright eyes exuded intelligence and wisdom, but she seemed unaccustomed to social interaction, giving off an air of someone sheltered from the world.
The younger sister is a tomboy, and the older one is a high-class lady, he thought to himself.
Looking at these two budding beauties, who were sisters yet so different in personality and drive, he became a little interested.
After the younger sister said something to the older one, she pushed her into the seat and then sat on her lap.
Seeing this, Le Zhengling could already foresee that the younger sister would definitely be a troublemaker for her older sister in the future. At the same time, he marveled at how close the two sisters were.
He had a younger brother in his past life. Although the two of them would argue from time to time, with one tricking the other, they were very close. In this life, he was all alone, which felt a bit lonely at times.
Some things are only truly valued once they are lost.
He shook his head and stopped looking at them, reopening his book to read.
But he couldn't focus at all. The younger sister next to him seemed to have a case of hyperactivity, constantly bumping into him and shouting without any regard for her surroundings.
"Sister, sister! Look, there are so many people!"
"Sister, sister! When we get there, stick close to me. It's your first time out, so don't get lost."
"Sister, sister! Good thing I have sharp eyes, or we would have had to stand all the way to our destination."
"Sister, sister..."
The incessant chatter and her hand constantly bumping into him started to get on his nerves. Le Zhengling put down his book and looked at them with annoyance.
Seemingly noticing his movement, the older sister paused, then realized what was happening. She quickly hugged her restless sister and gave him an apologetic smile. "Sorry!"
"Why are you apologizing, sister?" the younger one asked, looking confused. She then turned her head to look at Le Zhengling.
"Hey! Don't you bully my sister. Even though it's her first time out, I'm Aozaki—"
"That's enough, Aoko! Stop it."
