Youri's awareness returned slowly—fragmented, distant, like pieces of himself drifting back through a fog he could not fully grasp. At first, there was only darkness. Then came sensation.
Cold.
Not the biting, merciless cold of the icy domain—but something softer. Contained. Controlled.
Then warmth.
A faint heat brushed against his skin, uneven and flickering. It pulsed gently, as if alive.
His eyes opened.
Blurred shapes swam into focus. Shadows danced along uneven stone walls, their forms bending and stretching with the rhythm of a small fire crackling nearby. The scent of smoke lingered in the air—real, grounded, human.
Youri blinked slowly.
"…Where…?"
His voice came out dry, barely more than a whisper.
He shifted slightly—and pain answered immediately.
A sharp, piercing sting erupted from the side of his head, spreading like lightning through his senses. His breath caught as his hand instinctively rose to his temple, fingers brushing against rough bandaging.
"—Tch…"
The memory hit him all at once.
The icy domain.The MonsterThe fight.
The overwhelming force of that monster…
And then—
The dragon.
Youri inhaled sharply, his chest rising as reality snapped back into place.
He pushed himself up.
Or at least—he tried.
The moment he lifted his upper body, pain surged through him again, this time deeper—his ribs, his muscles, his entire frame protesting violently. His strength gave out, and he collapsed back onto the surface beneath him.
A bed.
Wooden. Crude.
Real.
"…I'm alive…" he muttered under his breath, disbelief lacing every word.
That realization alone didn't sit right with him.
He shouldn't be alive.
Not after that.
Not after facing something like that monster in that state.
His eyes moved slowly across the cave.
It wasn't large—but it was structured. Intentional. The stone walls were rough, but not entirely natural; parts of it looked carved, shaped by hand. Near the fire sat a few scattered items—tools, cloth, what looked like remnants of supplies.
Someone lived here.
Or… something did.
Youri's expression hardened slightly as instinct returned.
He wasn't alone.
And in a place like Tartarus—
That was never a comforting thought.
Then—
A presence.
At the entrance of the cave.
Youri's gaze snapped toward it immediately.
A figure stood there.
Still. Silent.
Watching.
For a brief moment, it didn't move—and in that stillness, something about it felt… wrong.
It was wrapped entirely in layers of deep black fabric, thick and heavy, absorbing the faint firelight rather than reflecting it. The cloak hung loosely, draping over the figure's form like a shadow given shape. Its edges were frayed, uneven—telling stories of time, travel… and survival.
The hood hung low.
Too low.
Where a face should have been—
There was only darkness.
Not shadow.
Not concealment.
Something deeper.
Youri's breath steadied, but his muscles tensed. Even injured, even weakened—his body prepared.
"…Who are you?" he asked, his voice low, cautious—but edged with sharp awareness.
The figure didn't answer immediately.
It stepped forward instead.
Slow. Measured. Silent.
Each movement was deliberate, controlled—like someone who knew exactly how much presence to give… and how much to hide.
Youri pushed himself up again despite the pain. This time, he managed to sit, though barely. His vision swayed for a moment—but he held his ground.
The figure closed the distance.
And then—
It removed the hood.
What lay beneath was not a face.
It was a mask.
Dark brown, uneven, and unsettling. It looked carved—no, grown—from twisted wood. Its surface carried rough, flowing lines like bark stretched over something unnatural. The eye holes were jagged, asymmetrical—cut rather than shaped—revealing nothing but shadow beneath.
At the top, just barely visible—
Strands of silver hair slipped free.
Human.
At least in part.
Youri's eyes narrowed.
"…What are you?"
The question came sharper this time.
The figure didn't answer directly.
Instead—
It moved closer.
And before Youri could react, a firm hand pressed against his chest, pushing him back onto the bed.
"You should not be up."
The voice came low.
Calm.
And unmistakably feminine.
Youri frowned, irritation flickering through the pain.
"I asked you—what are you!?"
His tone rose, frustration breaking through his restraint.
"And how did I get here!?"
For a moment—
Silence.
The masked figure stood still, watching him. Studying him.
Then it turned its head slightly toward the cave's entrance.
And gave a sharp whistle.
The sound cut through the air cleanly—precise, practiced.
A response came immediately.
A low, rumbling growl echoed from outside.
Heavy footsteps followed.
The ground itself seemed to shift slightly with each one.
Youri's eyes widened just slightly as a massive shadow filled the cave's entrance.
And then—
It appeared.
The dragon.
The same creature that had pulled him from death itself.
Up close, its presence was even more overwhelming. Its massive head lowered slightly as it entered, careful despite its size. Scales layered across its body like armor, each one dark and textured, reflecting faint glimmers of firelight. Its eyes burned with an unnatural glow—intelligent, aware… ancient.
It wasn't just a beast.
It was something more.
Youri stared at it, his mind racing.
"…You…"
The masked figure turned back to him.
"I see you remember."
Youri looked between them—the figure and the dragon—trying to piece together something that made sense.
"…You saved me."
It wasn't a question.
The figure tilted its head slightly.
Then nodded.
"Barely."
Youri exhaled slowly, leaning back despite himself.
"…Why?"
A simple question.
But a heavy one.
The figure was silent again for a moment.
Then—
It spoke.
"I'm just a ghost."
Youri frowned.
"A soul lost… and stripped of purpose."
The words were calm. Too calm.
"I go by the name… Lea."
Youri repeated it silently in his mind.
Lea.
Then she raised her hand—pointing toward the entrance.
Toward the dragon.
"And that…"
The creature shifted slightly, its massive wings folding closer to its body as if acknowledging the introduction.
"…is this domain's ruler."
Youri's eyes sharpened.
"Gaisen."
The dragon's gaze met Youri's.
Unblinking.
Unwavering.
"Gaisen… of the Dark."
