Ribs. Tamsin could count them through the bay's winter coat without pressing, and she counted them twice before light because her hands wanted something to do.
The bay stood at the door end with its nose in the empty hay rack. It had stood like that most of the night. Every so often it lifted its head and put it back in the rack, as if the hay might have come while it wasn't looking. The rag Nissa had wrapped on its near fore was dark at the bottom where the second cut had wept through. It shifted its weight off that leg when Tamsin's hand moved, and back on it when her hand stopped.
"Don't," Nissa said from the hearth. "You'll have it thinking there's something coming."
Tamsin took her hand away.
