Chapter 6 - IN THE EYES OF THE LAW

{Connor}

The doorbell rang waking me from my sleep, I grudgingly opened my eyes and realized it was morning already. Slowly I flung my legs off the bed and got up.

As I stood up I felt completely energized, almost like yesterday never happened, even my wounds had healed completely. Unfortunately, there was no way I could forget last night.

The doorbell rang again and I hurriedly shook my head and threw on a shirt and a pair of pants, I didn't even have time to fully process anything, I just rushed downstairs and opened the front door.

"Connor MacArthur?" Said one of the two police officers standing by the doorstep, "You're under arrest for assault."

"What! I didn't do anything, let me go. I swear I didn't do anything." I yelled as the officers grabbed me and put handcuffs on me.

"What the hell is going on here?" Came Jack's voice from inside.

"Morning Mr MacArthur sadly, we have to arrest Connor."

Jack furrowed his brows, "And may I ask on what grounds?"

"Aggravated assault, he assaulted a Mr Hank Monroe with clear intent to harm.

We have footage from the traffic cams and it clearly shows him assaulting Mr Hank for no apparent reason. I'm sorry Mr MacArthur, we're just doing our job."

Jack looked at me with a very confusing look on his face before grabbing my shoulder, "You just hold on Connor, I'll take care of all this."

The policemen continued to drag me away from the porch and into their cruiser. I watched from the window as Jack took out his phone and started making calls, Laura and George had come out of the house just as the car started to move, she looked completely devastated.

I was taken to the police station and detained in a police cell. Knowing Jack he was probably making all the calls he could to get me out but the traffic cam footage would make it a lot harder seeing as I definitely went after Hank.

I spent the entire day in that cell, I felt like I was slowly losing my mind just sitting on that bench. Towards evening, a police officer finally approached my cell, "Can't say I'm surprised, you are Jack MacArthur's kid after all. You made bail." He then opened the cell door and I slowly walked out, my legs felt numb after sitting for hours.

As the police officer walked me to the desk I saw Jack standing there waiting for me with the same confusing look on his face as this morning.

"You alright Connor?" He asked with a soft smile.

"Yeah, been better." I sighed.

"Let's get you home." He threw his arm over my shoulder pulling me close to him as we walked out of the police station.

As we got home Laura rushed over to me and gave me a long warm hug, "Are you okay honey?"

I slowly hugged her back, "I'm okay Mom."

"Now Connor, I need you to tell me what exactly happened. I may have been able to get you out on bail but there's still going to be a trial, I mean you assaulted that man. I would find it impossible to believe but I saw the video footage." Jack said calmly.

"I don't know what came over me Dad, I thought he was scamming Mom out of a thousand dollars and I just lost it."

"I understand how your emotions could've gotten the best of you but you need to understand that your actions have consequences, Connor." Jack then grabbed my shoulder, "Now I'm going to do my absolute best to make sure you don't go to jail but I'm not always going to be able to help you like this. Next time just think things through, okay kiddo?"

"Sure thing Dad, I'll be more careful from now on."

"Good lad, now go find George he's been looking for you ever since he got back from school." He patted my back as I walked away.

"Connor! Where have you been, did you get arrested?" George came barreling down the hallway towards me.

"Hey, buddy. I guess you can say that but everything's fine now." I smiled at him, "So, want to go play Fortnite?"

His eyes instantly lit up, "yeah let's do it." He grabbed my hand and began pulling me to my room. I chuckled slightly as I let him pull me away, he was after all my favorite person in the world.

About a week went by and soon enough it was the date of the trial. I wasn't exactly worried because if you had Jack MacArthur on your side, your chances of going to Jail are as slim as slim can get.

As expected the trial went on smoothly and all charges against me were dropped but I did have to attend mandatory anger management therapy with a licensed therapist at least once a week as ordered by the court.

I stared back at Doctor Lindsay as I lay on her office sofa, "What can I say doc, my emotions got the best of me and I acted out."

The clock on her wall struck 3 o'clock bringing an end to our session. "Well Doc I guess that's our time, I would say see you next week but I'll be on Campus by then." I jumped off the sofa and grabbed my bag heading out the door.

"Wait Connor, I still feel like we would need a few more sessions, we just started to get somewhere." Doctor Lindsay said getting up.

"Out of my hands Doc, have a good weekend," I said and was soon out the door.

I know what I was doing was terrible, I needed to address my problems, and they all started with that night but I had decided to let it be, no point stressing myself to understand something I couldn't even remember. But one thing was for certain; on that night, I had ceased to be human.
