Emiya was, in fact, a very ordinary person.
He was born into an ordinary family: his father ran a small convenience store in their neighborhood, his mother was a dedicated housewife, and he had an older brother who was five years his senior.
He grew up in an ordinary environment, attending ordinary elementary, middle, and high schools. His grades were also, of course, very ordinary.
Because of his mediocre grades, he didn't get into a four-year university and ended up at a vocational college.
After graduation, he couldn't find a good job, so he naturally inherited his father's convenience store, becoming a simple homebody while running the business.
Emiya had always believed that his ordinary life would continue. In a few years, he would marry an ordinary wife, have a mischievous son or a well-behaved daughter, and live a peaceful, unremarkable life.
It wouldn't be dramatic or full of passion, just like the lives of countless other cogs in the social machine.
But Emiya never expected that he, this ordinary and average man, would gain a superpower that was neither ordinary nor average. And this story begins last night.
Last night, while running the convenience store and scrolling on his phone, Emiya opened a webpage around 11:00 PM. The page suddenly redirected to a survey.
[Question: If you had the chance to get a cheat, what kind would you want?]
[A: A superpower, of course! Superpowers are cool.]
[B: A system. Systems are the best.]
[C: A magical artifact, a destructive one that can ruin the world.]
[D: A secret technique, one that grants me immortality and lets me dominate the cosmos.]
[E: Technology, to crush other races and conquer the universe.]
[Note: ...]
The survey was interesting, so Emiya didn't close it immediately. Instead, he thought about the options with great interest. A superpower, a system, an artifact, a secret technique, technology... they were all good, but something felt missing.
After some thought, Emiya didn't select any of the options. Instead, he wrote a sentence in the notes.
"If it's a cheat, I want to create my own. After all, a custom-made cheat is the most suitable, because I want to know what I truly want."
Then, Emiya clicked the submit button, but the page didn't go to a new screen. It just turned into a 404 error.
Sigh...
As expected, I was overthinking it. After closing the page, Emiya went back to browsing on his phone.
As a man nearing 30, Emiya was long past the age of dreaming and no longer held any hope for fantasies. While others might have found his daily routine of managing a convenience store boring, Emiya was quite content.
At the end of the day, he was just an average person who was satisfied with what he had and had no grand ambitions.
If Emiya had been ambitious in the past, he would have worked harder and changed his fate with knowledge. But unfortunately, his ordinary life had shaped his ordinary personality. He no longer wanted to struggle.
Just as he always did, Emiya closed the convenience store at around 11:30 PM. He went home, washed his face, and lay down on his bed. He plugged in his phone and fell into a deep sleep.
He always opened the store before 7:00 AM, so he never stayed up past midnight. This was a habit he had developed over time.
But today, Emiya had a very strange dream.
In his dream, he saw a giant deity. He couldn't say how big the deity was, but he vaguely remembered that one of its eyeballs seemed to be larger than the sun. Of course, that was impossible; it was just a dream.
He heard the deity in his dream say, "I randomly selected 100,000 surveys. While your answer wasn't the best, it was very interesting, so I will give you a chance."
Then, the massive deity blew a breath, and Emiya was blown away. After that... he woke up.
Emiya found himself on the floor, having rolled off his bed. He quickly got up, went back to bed, and took a deep breath. The sky was bright, and the clock on the wall showed the time was 7:00 AM.
According to his usual habit, he should have been up and opening the store already, but he was late today.
However, Emiya didn't get up immediately; his mind was still replaying the dream from the night before. It was incredibly vivid.
He could clearly recall the deity's gigantic, sun-like eye and the tone of its voice. Emiya had had dreams before that he remembered upon waking, but he would quickly forget the details as time passed.
So, Emiya initially didn't pay it much mind. He quickly got out of bed, washed up, ate, and went to open the convenience store.
However, the events of the dream didn't fade away. Instead, they became clearer and clearer.
That evening, Emiya returned home and sat on the sofa, realizing he simply couldn't forget what had happened in his dream.
Every detail was so lifelike that he couldn't forget it even if he tried.
Could it be... that the dream was real?
Emiya instinctively shook his head. How could it be? He didn't believe it.
But... what if it was?
While a little incredulous, he tentatively spoke aloud, "I want to create a cheat."
As soon as he said it, a circular dialogue box with a number inside appeared before his eyes.
100.
Holy crap! Holy crap!! Holy crap!!
Emiya was shocked by this supernatural sight and almost jumped off the sofa. It was true!
The events of his dream were real! This was unbelievable. He had been a lifetime loser, so why had he suddenly become a winner? It didn't make sense.
Wait, encountering a deity in the first place doesn't make sense.
Emiya took a few deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down... Yeah, right. How could he possibly calm down after something like this? It was unimaginable, incredible, and unbelievable.
To be honest, he felt like jumping up and doing a celebratory, cringey dance. So Emiya jumped up, and to an outside observer, this would have looked like bizarre human behavior.
But after letting out his excitement for a few minutes, he finally calmed down.
Emiya looked at the number 100 in the dialogue box and thought for a moment. He was completely lost. What did this mean? He had no idea. What was the significance of 100?
After a moment's thought, Emiya decided to skip over the meaning of 100 for now and focus on creating his cheat.
What kind of cheat would suit him? After a long time, he couldn't help but feel a little silly. The first thing that came to his mind was a system.
Yes, the all-purpose system.
But he hadn't chosen the system in the survey. Now that he had the ability to create his own cheat, wouldn't it be redundant to make a system?
After a long time of deliberation, Emiya decided to give up on the system. However, his imagination was limited, and he didn't have many good ideas.
So, after thinking for a while, he decided to create a superpower.
Unlike an external force like a system, Emiya preferred a power that resided within himself. A superpower seemed like a good choice. So Emiya said, "I want to create a superpower."
[What superpower do you want to create?]
A line of small text appeared under the number 100 in the circular dialogue box.
Emiya said, "Of course, it's the ability to travel through worlds, like the worlds of novels, anime, manga, movies, TV shows, and more."
He could have chosen other superpowers that might have allowed him to leave Earth and venture into the cosmos, but Emiya preferred the worlds of fantasy. That was a man's true romance.
[The Transmigration ability has been added.]
Then, Emiya watched as the number 100 began to drop, instantly falling to 50. At the same time, an invisible force surged into his body.
In an instant, Emiya felt as though he could travel to another world at any moment. It was as if he could enter another world just by activating this superpower.
At that moment, Emiya finally understood. The number 100 must represent energy. He had created a superpower, which consumed 50 energy, leaving him with 50 points.
However, 50 energy points were enough to create a world-traveling superpower, which meant this energy was very powerful. Because of this, he needed to be more cautious.
Emiya thought for a moment and continued, "I want the transmigration ability to be able to be activated at any time. Ten times a day, no, a hundred times a day."
This was very important. It meant that if he ever encountered danger, he could use his transmigration ability to escape at any time.
Emiya then watched as the number 50 began to fall, quickly dropping to 30. Twenty energy points poured into his body, and Emiya felt his superpower beginning to evolve.
Even though it cost 20 energy points to add just one function, Emiya didn't regret it. This meant safety, and his life was the most important thing.
Looking at the remaining 30 energy points, Emiya thought for a moment and decided to upgrade his transmigration ability again. "I want to be able to take people with me when I transmigrate. The limit should be 1,000 people."
[Sorry, there isn't enough energy.]
Emiya: ...
"Then 100 people," Emiya said, reducing the number by a factor of 10.
The energy dropped from 30 to 20, costing 10 points. Ten energy points entered his body, and Emiya felt his superpower evolve once more. This time, he could take others with him.
With 20 energy points left, what should he do?
He thought and thought, tapping his head, his mind working quickly.
Suddenly, a lightbulb went off in Emiya's mind. "Language! Yes, language. I want to gain the superpower of Language Comprehension, so I can speak freely with anyone."
This was very important. What if he went to another world where they didn't speak Chinese? Even if he just went to the U.S., Emiya would be stumped.
Besides Mandarin, he didn't know any other languages.
In fact, he couldn't even understand other Chinese dialects, let alone Japanese or English. If he couldn't even communicate, there was no way he could talk to anyone.
So this ability was a must.
[You have gained Language Comprehension.]
In an instant, Emiya gained his second superpower.
To his surprise, the Language Comprehension superpower didn't cost him much energy. The 20 points only dropped by 5, leaving him with 15.
Five energy points were enough for Emiya to learn any language. It was incredibly convenient. This showed just how powerful the energy was.
He had transmigration and language. What was left?
Emiya thought hard. To be honest, he didn't think the remaining 15 energy points were enough to create any high-level superpowers. He was well aware of this.
But then, Emiya suddenly thought that it wouldn't be enough if he was the only one with Language Comprehension.
What if he got a girlfriend in two different worlds and they couldn't communicate with each other?
So Emiya said, "I want to evolve my Language Comprehension superpower so that I can grant it to others."
Instantly, Emiya's 15 energy points dropped by another 5. He was left with only 10 points.
He had transmigration, self-preservation, and language. What was he still missing?
Oh, right. Offensive power.
It wasn't enough to just be able to protect himself without being able to fight back. Emiya had no desire to harm others, but he also didn't want others to harm him.
So he said, "I'll use the remaining 10 points to get Psychic Power."
In an instant, the remaining 10 energy points all surged into Emiya's mind. He immediately felt a mysterious power awaken in his brain.
