Chapter 36 - Darkseid

She instantly hated the milkshake with genuine disgust, revolted by this food that her palate found offensive. It would be like someone taking a huge heaping amount of pure salt or sugar, putting it directly onto a spoon, and eating it all at once... or wait, modern humans were pretty much completely okay with that level of sugar consumption, they did it constantly without thinking. Although admittedly not the salt part, so perhaps they wouldn't fully understand her reaction. That was actually a bit concerning…

How can you drink something so sweet? Does it not overwhelm you?" Wonder Woman asked, genuinely baffled and slightly horrified.

Her diet back on Themyscira was mainly composed of simple, wholesome foods—fresh bread, quality meat, clean water, and various fruits, which they sometimes crushed and turned into natural drinks.

Yes, in ancient times, a person could actually survive quite healthily on bread alone as a staple, but the problem was that today's modern mass-produced bread was deeply unhealthy due to companies being cheap, cutting corners, and loading it with preservatives and processed ingredients.

"Nah, not at all," David said with a shrug. "Today's humans have gradually grown and adapted over generations to handle this level of sweetness without issue. In fact, food scarcity is the last thing many people in developed countries lack today. We actually have a serious obesity problem rather than a hunger problem, which is its own issue. Both have their own unique troubles, but I would honestly rather live in a world where people have so much food available to eat that they grow fat from overconsumption than live in the alternative where people starve." David caught the milkshake as she handed it back in disgust, and continued drinking it without a single care in the world.

Indeed, America was remarkably lucky in that regard compared to much of human history. Of course, some people still went to sleep hungry even in this wealthy nation, poverty and food insecurity weren't completely eliminated—but luckily, the number was relatively small compared to other countries and other time periods.

Although that number had actually been steadily increasing before David suddenly popped up and started his super act, and now it was dropping significantly as he made absolutely sure everyone had access to enough food to survive and thrive.

Oh, and he was also cracking down hard on the unhealthy, chemical-laden processed food being put on the market by corporations that prioritized profits over people's well-being.

Honestly, the U.S. citizens were genuinely stupid to continuously eat food that was slowly killing them from the inside out, and completely ignoring the glaring, obvious fact that years ago, people didn't have the severe chronic health problems and conditions they have today.

Yet with all of the tools, resources, and information they had readily available to them at their fingertips, they still passively allowed the rich to be stingy and greedy, giving them unhealthy stuff filled with chemicals and preservatives so they could cut costs and maximize their profits?

If that pattern of behavior wasn't stupid, David didn't know what was. The rich corporations had it ridiculously easy with these fools who willingly allow stuff like this to happen without any real resistance or sustained pushback… how dumb are they? It was genuinely laughable when you stopped to think about it.

Imagine a massive billion-dollar company wanting to make even more money on top of the obscene amounts they already had, so they deliberately make the product worse in quality, and actively unhealthy for consumers, and the people just go with it after complaining loudly for some time before eventually moving on and forgetting about it… How incredibly lucky did they have it? If this were a video game, wouldn't they essentially be playing on easy mode with no real challenge or consequences? But this was supposed to be a story, surely in actual reality such a laughable, unrealistic thing would never actually happen on such a scale… right?

Wonder Woman was about to say something in response to David's observations when David suddenly frowned deeply as he looked upwards towards the sky above them.

"What's wrong?" she asked, genuinely confused by the sudden shift in David's aura and demeanor.

"Earth is under attack. I guess this is an alien invasion? No, more like a higher dimension invasion," David said with a casual shrug.

"Why are you so calm?" the president, who was standing at the side observing their interaction, yelled in growing panic.

"They are most likely using numbers to draw me away. So, while I head off to deal with the sea of monsters, I guess all of Earth's heroes might have to unite to face their leaders," David said with a tired sigh while reaching up and removing his blindfold, allowing Wonder Woman for the first time to see his eyes directly, and her breath was stolen from her for the second time by the same person.

First, David dared to charm her with the beautiful smile of his while holding his hand out towards her after defeating her in their one-on-one duel. It was wonderful, the way the sun shone behind him, creating a backdrop, that genuine smile, with her on the ground looking up at him from below… it had felt so unexpectedly… romantic, and now, those beautiful blue eyes which looked directly at her, causing her heart to race uncontrollably in her chest…

"Got it… where would their boss be?" the president asked, pulling out her phone, which she was only allowed to use for emergencies.

"Near New York, everyone should gather there. I will deal with killing the billions of monsters that are about to appear in 3… 2… and 1." As soon as David finished counting down to zero, deafening roars filled the sky as countless winged monsters flew out of a massive swirling portal, like a bunch of insects leaving a disturbed beehive.

David teleported away instantly in a flash, leaving Wonder Woman behind, who instantly flew off without hesitation, heading towards New York at top speed, where the heroes who had gotten the urgent news began to gather one by one from across the country and world… and there, assembled together, they met with Darkseid, who smirked confidently seeing all of them gathered before him.

After all, to him, the most troublesome person to deal with was unquestionably David; the others standing before him? Well, they were nothing to him alone and were only mildly troublesome when they worked together as a team.

Doctor Fate instantly moved forward, wanting to take the lead in the confrontation, knowing full well how dangerous Darkseid wass, but a concentrated beam of lightning shot from Granny Goodness, who made herself, and the members of Darkseid's elite forces known to the assembled heroes… for Darkseid came in strong and prepared, not wanting to give David any more time to keep growing stronger with each passing day.

"Kill them all," Darkseid ordered, and instantly the elites shot forward like missiles to meet with the assembled Heroes waiting for them, where Black Canary jumped forward without hesitation, unleashing her devastating scream, which stunned them momentarily, allowing Wonder Woman to fly in at incredible speed, sending Steppenwolf, who barely managed to raise his axe and block her descending sword at the last second, flying backwards through the air.

Big Barda's attention was momentarily distracted by the sight of Steppenwolf flying past her like a ragdoll, leaving her completely wide open as Hawkgirl slammed her mace weapon hard across her face, sending her rocketing away from the battle. But before Hawkgirl could follow up with another devastating attack, she was sent rocketing violently towards the ground as Aurelie, the fierce leader of the Female Furies, made her move.

It was complete chaos, all heroes who could manage to gather here in time uniting together, all while David ran around at blinding speeds, slaughtering monsters left and right without mercy while leaving behind Blue hovering near the massive portals, which actively sucked in the incoming waves of parademons.

But as he moved further away from the portals, Blue weakened considerably, so he had to move quickly and return to strengthen the construct before they disappeared entirely, as it would waste precious time recreating Blue from scratch.

He had to run all over the entire planet, covering land, sea, and even forcing himself to jump underwater to reach the monsters there. He slaughtered all of the parademons that somehow managed to slip past Blue and was forced to teleport from time to time to save someone who was just about to be attacked by the monsters.

Every single second, every heartbeat, and every moment, his mind was working at absolute 100% capacity to lock onto the locations of the billions of parademons continuously spilling out of the portal, creating and calculating the best possible route for him to follow to save the maximum amount of time.

He had to move at his full speed without holding back, which meant running at absolute full speed while simultaneously using Blue to pull him forward through the air, while teleporting from time to time when the distance was too great.
