Chapter 7 - Time’s Edge

Arin's breath came fast as he stumbled through the crowded street. His hands trembled, a faint glow leaking from his fingertips no matter how hard he tried to hide it. People were starting to notice. A woman carrying a basket froze, her eyes widening. A child tugged at his mother's hand, pointing toward him. Whispers rose, cutting through the evening air like blades.

"What is that?" someone muttered."Did you see his hands?" another gasped."He's not normal!"

Arin's heart pounded louder than the noise around him. He pressed his palms against his sides, but the glow only grew brighter, pulsing in rhythm with his fear. He wanted to scream, to run, to vanish. But his legs felt heavy, his chest tight.

This was the very thing he had been warned never to do, lose control in front of others.

Then, through the blur of faces, he saw her.

At the far end of the street, leaning casually against a wall, stood a girl with hair as dark as ink. Her eyes were sharp, cruel, and far too calm for the chaos around them. She smiled faintly, a predator's smile.

Before Arin could even blink, she moved.

She cut through the crowd like a streak of lightning, her body a blur. In less than a heartbeat she was in front of him, her hand clamping tightly around his arm. Her strength was crushing, far beyond human.

"Got you," she whispered, her voice low and mocking.

Arin's body stiffened. His vision blurred. Darkness pressed in. And then,

Everything shifted.

His eyes opened again. He was standing in the same street the same people around him the same whispers rising. But the girl was no longer holding him. She stood far away at the end of the street leaning against the wall exactly as before.

Arin blinked rapidly his chest heaving. "What what just happened"?

Then almost on instinct he saw her move. She sprinted toward him again faster than thought weaving through the crowd with the same predatory grace. A chill ran down his spine. "This… this has happened before".

His stomach knotted. Every step she took every flick of her hair every narrowing of her eyes it all mirrored the moment he had just lived. The fear the panic the pulse in his chest it all came rushing back. Arin staggered slightly the feeling of deja vu gripping him like a vice.

And this time someone else was there.

A giant of a man stepped into the street between them, his presence so commanding that even the crowd seemed to pause. He wore plain local clothes, nothing that would have drawn attention in any other place, but on him they looked like the armor of a warrior. His frame was broad, his steps steady, and his eyes calm, burning with quiet defiance held more weight than any sword.

The girl skidded to a halt, her grin faltering.

The man turned slightly, extending one massive hand to gently hold Arin's trembling wrist. His other hand rose, palm outward, as if pushing the air itself back.

His voice was steady, unhurried, but filled with power."Do you dare to come now?"

The girl's smirk wavered. For the first time, her eyes flickered with hesitation. She glanced at Arin, then back at the giant man.

A faint hiss escaped her lips. Without another word, she spun and dashed away, vanishing into the maze of streets as quickly as she had appeared.

Silence fell.

Arin stood frozen, unable to speak, his arm still trembling where the man held it.

The man finally turned his gaze on him. His expression softened, though his eyes still carried the weight of storms. "We need to go," he said quietly.

Arin swallowed hard, his throat dry. "Who… who are you?"

The man gave a small, almost sad smile. "My name is Kael. And right now, I am the one keeping you alive."

Arin's legs nearly gave way beneath him. Relief, fear, and confusion swirled inside him like a storm. He glanced around, expecting the crowd to still be staring, but most of them had already drifted away. Their eyes no longer burned with curiosity or fear. It was as if they had forgotten what they had seen.

That was when Arin noticed a faint ripple in the air, like the shimmer of heat on stone. His heart skipped. Someone else was there unseen.

Kael noticed his stare and gave a short nod. "You felt it, didn't you?"

Arin nodded slowly.

"That wasn't her trick," Kael explained. "The moment you thought she caught you, that was time itself folding back. Someone gave you another chance. One of mine. A guardian of the clock. You will meet him soon enough."

Arin's lips parted in shock. His head spun. "Time… was reversed?"

Kael's grip tightened slightly on his wrist, grounding him. "Yes. And it saved your life."

The crowd had now returned to their business as though nothing unusual had happened. One person muttered to another who is in front of this beggar kid. The kid is acting weird might be a insane lets go back to our business. The whispers were gone the stares forgotten.

Kael began to walk, guiding him firmly but gently through the streets. "You can't stay here anymore. Too many eyes, too much danger. Once your light has been seen, the wrong ones will follow it."

Arin stumbled alongside him. "The girl , who was she?"

Kael's gaze hardened. "A servant of the shadows. One of the many who hunt us. She wanted you because you are new, untrained, and unguarded. The evil feeds on the unprepared. That's why I came."

Arin shivered. "She almost had me."

"But she didn't," Kael said firmly. His voice carried no doubt. "Because I was here. And because time itself chose to spare you once."

The words sank deep into Arin's mind, though they offered little comfort. He still felt the weight of eyes on him, the memory of the girl's hand crushing his arm.

As they turned into a quieter alley, Kael stopped. He knelt slightly so that his eyes were level with Arin's. For a moment, the giant man seemed less like an untouchable guardian and more like a teacher, steady and patient.

"Arin," he said, his voice gentler now, "you are more important than you understand. Your power is not a curse. But without control, it will destroy you and feed those who want to end us all. That is why I am here. That is why we must move."

Arin stared at him, still trembling. "And if I make a mistake again?"

Kael placed a massive hand on his shoulder. "Then we will catch you. That is what it means to stand together."

For the first time, a spark of hope flickered in Arin's chest.

Behind them, the shadows deepened. Somewhere out there, the girl was not gone. She was waiting, watching, perhaps already planning her next strike. But for now, Kael stood at his side, a shield between him and the darkness.

And in the unseen currents of the street, the presence of another lingered , the one who had turned back time, giving Arin a second chance.

Arin did not yet know him, but soon he would.

For now, there was only Kael's hand, steady and unyielding, and the quiet promise of safety.

"Come," Kael said again, his voice a vow. "We have no more time to waste."

Together, they stepped into the deepening night, their path uncertain, but their bond already sealed by fate itself.
