Chapter 12 - Chasing the Missing

Elias sat near the window of the hideout, tapping his fingers against the wood. The night outside was calm, too calm. The streets below were quiet, the only movement coming from the flicker of lanterns swaying in the breeze. Something about the silence felt wrong, and his stomach churned with unease.

He stood up and looked around the room. Kael wasn't back yet. Keiren had gone out earlier. The rest of the team was scattered across the room, some sharpening weapons, others resting. Elias counted them one by one, but when he reached Arin's spot, it was empty. His eyes moved to Mira's seat-"also empty?".

His heart skipped.

"Where are they?" Elias muttered.

Riven, seated nearby, looked up from the old book he was scanning. "Who?"

"Arin and Mira," Elias said sharply. His voice carried, drawing everyone's attention. "They're not here."

The room fell into a heavy silence. Heads turned, searching the corners, but it was true, both were missing. Elias's face hardened. "They slipped out. I told them not to wander!"

Panic spread. These weren't safe streets.

Just then, the door creaked open and Keiren walked in, brushing dust off his suit. He stopped when he saw Elias's expression. "What's wrong?"

"They're gone," Elias said.

Keiren froze. "What do you mean gone?!"

"They sneaked out. No one noticed." Elias's tone grew sharp. "If the wrong people see them....."

Keiren didn't wait. He grabbed his swords. "I'll look for them."

"Be fast," Elias warned. "And shout if you find them."

Keiren bolted out into the streets, his boots echoing against the cobblestones. His eyes scanned every shadow. The city at night was a maze of empty stalls, closed shops, and alleys that smelled of sea and smoke. Lanterns flickered weakly, leaving pools of darkness where anyone could be hiding.

Meanwhile, the clash of steel rang out in the empty street. Mira's blade moved fast, parrying strike after strike, sparks flying as metal met metal. Arin stood at her side, his hands blazing, throwing bursts of fire to push their attackers back.

But the hooded figures did not stop. More shadows spilled out from the alleys, their steps silent, their blades shining under the weak lantern light. The street was filling with enemies.

Mira's breathing grew heavy. "They're everywhere…"

Arin holding his weapon, sweat dripping down his face as he lit another flame. "We can't hold them off forever."

The circle tightened. The hooded figures moved like hunters closing in on prey, their glowing eyes fixed on the two. For the first time that night, Mira's confidence faltered, and Arin felt the weight of fear pressing down on him.

The quiet city no longer felt empty. It felt alive. Watching. Waiting.

And as the hooded ones struck again, Arin and Mira realized they had made the worst mistake of all-leaving the hideout alone.

Arin's chest heaved as he forced another flame to rise. "We fight until help comes."

At the hideout, Elias couldn't sit still. He paced, fists clenched. "This is bad. Very bad."

Riven shut his book with a snap. "We shouldn't wait. They could be in trouble already."

Before Elias could respond, the door slammed open. Keiren stumbled in, breathless. "I found them!"

"Where?!" Elias rushed forward.

"Market street," Keiren panted. "They're fighting, but....." he swallowed hard "there are too many."

Elias didn't waste a second. "Everyone, move!"

The team grabbed their weapons and charged out into the night, following Keiren as he sprinted through winding alleys. The sound of steel clashing and fire bursting echoed faintly ahead, pulling them faster.

When they reached the market street, their blood ran cold.

Arin and Mira were cornered against a wall. Around them nearly a dozen hooded enemies, blades flashing in the firelight. Mira's arm was cut, her movements slowing. Arin's flames getting weak.

"Arin! Mira!" Elias shouted.

The hooded figures turned, their faces hidden, eyes glowing faintly. Without hesitation, Elias walked into the street, his army striking hard against one enemy's chest. Dev used his powers to twist another's vision, sending them stumbling. Keiren dashed forward, spinning his twin blades in a blur, cutting a path toward Arin.

"Stay up!" Keiren shouted, dragging Arin back on his feet.

The battle roared across the street. Fire lit the walls, sparks flew as blades clashed, and shouts of pain and rage filled the air. Mira fought with grit, striking left and right, though her blade hand trembled. Elias swung his weapon with fury, blocking two attackers at once. Riven ducked low, striking when enemies were off balance.

But the hooded ones fought like shadows, fast, silent, and relentless. For every one the team knocked back, another pressed in. More figures appeared from the alleys, their numbers swelling.

"We can't hold this!" Mira shouted.

Arin stumbled, nearly collapsing. Keiren caught him, gritting his teeth. "Don't you dare fall!"

The pressure grew heavier. The team was pushed into a corner, their energy draining. The hooded enemies moved in perfect rhythm, their blades flashing in the lantern light.

Elias blocked a strike, sweat running down his face. "We're not enough…!"

The hopelessness pressed down, choking the team.

The team tried to surged down the streets as one, every step carrying the weight of purpose and resolve. Weapons glinted in the dim light, shields raised, eyes scanning every shadow. The team pressed forward, but the enemy's force was overwhelming

Sparks of magic collided with steel, shields cracked, and cries of pain cut through the chaos. One by one, members faltered. Arin stumbled, his legs shaking from exhaustion, Mira's blade slipped from her hands as a blow struck her shoulder; Dev gritted his teeth, struggling to hold his shield against the relentless shadows. Nerion called forth waves to push back some attackers, but even the sea seemed strained against such numbers. Kieran darted between the fight, trying to help where he could, but even he got injured by a strike. Elias barked orders, but his voice barely carried over the roar of battle. One by one, they began to fall, tumbling to the ground, battered and bloodied. The enemy pressed on, shadows and hooded figures closing in. The team tried to hold together, but they where on the edge of defeat.

Then, a voice rang out.

"Hold on!"

From the far side of the street, Kael appeared , finally back.

Kael raised his weapon high, his voice echoing through the night. "Let's finish this together!"

The hooded figures froze. The enemies did not retreat this time. The hooded figures pressed forward, their numbers unrelenting, their shadows crawling over the injured team. Kael swung his weapon, cutting through the first wave, blocking attacks with incredible skill, but for every enemy he struck down, two more advanced. His power alone was not enough to turn the tide.

Keiren sheathed his blades, his voice shaking. "They are becoming strong again"

Elias's tone was harsh. "We Must win"

"I can do this all day" The hooded figures started laughing.

"You can't , I know you will do something like this. So I came prepared" Kael said with confidence.

Everyone shocked.
