Chapter 3 - Engagement Party

"So, sir, what time are you planning to go tomorrow, so I can arrange the convoys to take you to Abigail's house, so you can deliver the medicine to her in person?" Rowan suggested.

"I need no convoy, Rowan. Just get me an average old model car, make it look more tattered," Henry insisted bluntly without a second thought.

"But why, sir? This could be a chance to make her know that you ain't a poor person, and for that, she will start having regrets for ever looking down on you, and…."

Just before Rowan could finish what he was saying over the phone, Henry's voice interrupted, cold and angry. "Quit, Rowan. Did you forget what we spoke about? I need my identity to remain hidden just as always. I don't want anyone to know I'm rich, which includes Abigail. Do you understand?"

And Rowan from the other end of the phone nodded frantically. "Yes sir, I understand."

"Good. Now.. Do what I have instructed you to get. By tomorrow, at exactly 5pm, I will head to Abigail's family's house. I guess that's where the engagement party will take place, right?" Henry asked.

And Rowan replied. "Yes sir."

"---"

The next day, at exactly 5pm, Henry patiently stood at the roadside, wearing a black, worn-out, shabby suit while waiting for Rowan to arrive with the old, tattered model car he had instructed him to come with.

Henry lifted his wrist and looked at his watch. "Where could he be? I'm already running late. I need to get to the engagement party on time."

Henry mumbled with a gasp, already getting impatient. He had no grudges against the party, he just wanted to see Abigail on time so he could deliver the medicine to her. Ideally, the party would be bustling with guests and a lot of rich people from wealthy families because of how rich Alaric is.

Just within a few minutes, a car stopped at the side of the road, the sound from the engine was horrible, and the smell from the exhaust was unbearable; the paint from the car's body had already faded off.

The door gradually opened, and Rowan stepped out of the car, bowing his head as he began to apologise. "Sorry, sir, for taking much of your time. It took me some time to look for a car that best fit your description."

"It's nothing, at least you are here with exactly what I have requested for," Henry replied, gasping.

And after Henry looked into the window and noticed no keys on the car, he shifted his gaze to Rowan as he asked. "Where is the car key?"

Rowan tugged his hair playfully. "Um.. sir, the car doesn't have keys, it's been connected manually with electric wires. You needed something more tattered so I got exactly what you wanted."

Henry shook his head at Rowan's jokes, then smiled softly before getting into the car.

And just as he was about to drive away, Rowan's voice cut in. "Sir, is there any need to come with you? You might need my help."

"No, I prefer to go alone, I don't want them to think otherwise." Henry shook his head in disapproval, then drove away.

Within a few minutes, Henry arrived at Abigail's family mansion. The entire residence was filled with prominent guests who were invited to the engagement party. Expensive drinks and delicate aurora design illuminated the entire mansion. Food of different kinds was served from different corners by the waitress.

Henry stepped down from the old model car he came with, and all eyes were on him. His shabby, dirty clothes drew attention, and worst, his car looked and smelled disgusting.

Ignoring the stares from the people, Henry proceeded into Abigail's family mansion, and just as Henry was inside, Abigail's gaze caught up to him from a distance, and in that moment, she stormed out in his direction, with a fumed face which conveyed surprise and anger.

"What are you doing here? Are you here to cause another trouble and ruin my engagement party? I have warned you to stay away from me countless times but you keep getting your disgusting self stuck in my affairs."

Abigail furiously groaned at Henry, through gritted teeth, her tone low, trying to avoid attention from people.

Henry sighed deeply before giving a reply. "No, I'm here to come..."

Before Henry could finish what he was about to say, Abigail's present fiancée, Alaric, the son of Dominic, one of the richest men in the east county, who owned one of the well-known production companies in Atlanta, stepped in.

"Who do we have here?" He demanded, his brow slightly raised and a sneer evident on his lips.

"It's Henry, the man I told you about, the man who had been pestering my life," Abigail fumed, crossing her hands against her chest, as she replied.

Abigail didn't even refer to Henry as her ex-fiancée. She referred to him as a man who had been pestering her, and Henry got offended by her words but decided to keep it cool.

Alaric eyed Henry from head to toe, with a disgusted look.

"Young man, or whatever you call yourself, what are you doing here? As I can clearly see, no one would invite a dirty person like you who is literally dressed like a madman."

Alaric then used his wrist and covered his nose.

"Ooh gosh… how did you even pass the security and get here. I have to fire those fools."

Henry gasped, swallowing the insult, though he had expected this. "I'm here to..."

Just as before, before Henry could finish his speech, he was interrupted by Abigail's voice again.

"Nothing you would say that would make sense. Are you here to collect a fee for breaking up with you, because I see you are so poor and wretched that the money would help fix something in your miserable life?"

She wiggled her hair with a scoff before continuing. "Thank god I didn't end up with a poor-smelling man like you. Who couldn't even afford a good-looking suit."

"What is he doing here?" Muzan, Abigail's dad's voice, blurted out angrily from a distance, as he walked forward, holding hands with Lucia Abigail's mum.

"Are you here to cause trouble as usual?" Lucia, Abigail's mom asked furiously. "Now get the hell out of my house. Don't let me call the cops on you."

"I'm not here for all you have been accusing me of. I'm just here to deliver a life-saving medicine to Abigail. I have no business with the engagement party whatsoever."

"Life-saving medicine, you say? Did Abigail tell you she's sick or what? Or are you here to borrow money, you wretched bastard?" Alaric cut in with his voice, laughing hard.

"As far as I could remember, Abigail isn't suffering from any illness. Even though she does, I have money to get that sorted out, so get lost," Alaric added, after getting hold of his laughter.

Henry was speechless. He didn't know what to say next. He had tried speaking, and when he finally got the chance to voice out, they didn't believe him.

Furious and frustrated, Henry turned to leave, but just then, the door swung open, and a delicate figure walked in, her hair so alluring, her lips as pink as a berry fruit, her dress glimmering from the light and her sexy figure was very attractive.

"What is she doing here?" Henry thought inwardly, his face went pale, and confusion was written all over it. He wasn't expecting Sophia to be in a place like this.

Sophia's presence left all the people who had come to the engagement party stunned. She was creating a stir.

Abigail was stunned, and her parents were stunned as well; even Alaric himself was drawn by the irresistible sexy beauty and presence of Sophia.

The entire crowd stared in admiration. Lucia kept wondering what the daughter of the richest man in the entire c

ountry was doing in her house. The thought spirals in her mind desperately looking for answers.
