Chapter 4 - Iron Imperialism

I woke up in the morning to the sound of my workshop being used by someone other than me. I left my room and found my daughter Brigid working on a large bot. It looked to be four eyebot frames and hover tech with multiple Mr.Handy arms. Alongside the bot she was making were multiple eyebots with what seemed to be more powerful hover tech and a much larger laser gun attached.

It seems that throughout the night she had used the uploaded science data and some of my blueprints to create new bots to help her with her mission. With her occupied I got breakfast and began work on my next project. I wanted a full updated map of the world and to do so I'd need a drone to do it. I had found a book on aeronautics and had studied it a few times.

My bot would be a miniature blimp as it would allow it to reach near the atmospheres edge without massive fuel costs. With a basic ai and a high power camera and scanners I could easily map the world without interference. With a few arms the drone could do emergency repairs and maintenance to itself and continue its purpose.

The bot didn't take long to make as all it really was was a large sectioned balloon with a bot on the bottom of it. It was a car sized blimp with a small engine powered by a few fission batteries, and had arms and a lot of scanners. I immediately sent it off to the east as I wanted to see what had become of West Virginia after the events of Fallout 76. The state and its surroundings had many things in game that would allow me to skip generations of tech development.

With that done I quickly threw together a Mr. Handy to assist me and my sentry bot in expanding my production lines by taking over the old gas station. I planned to clear out the inside and make new walls up to the roof outside the building then connect them to make one large building.

I had already ordered and received stone and cement from the quarry in exchange for so eyebots so the resources I needed were already acquired. Upon arrival at the gas station I laid out a schematic for my sentry bot to follow then went inside with my Mr.Handy and began cleaning out the building.

By the time the sun set all that was left to do was cover the gap in the ceiling and make the production lines. Scout bots had already found usable scrap so I sent out my sentry bot with some eyebots to recover what was needed. Brigid seemed to have completed her bot which looked to be a large tanky combat eyebot thing.

The next day I completed my new building and was making the new production lines when Brigid came in. "Father, a caravan has arrived and are asking for you." Confused I looked at her and asked "What kind of caravan? The scrap caravan isn't supposed to be here for another three days right?"

"Indeed father, this caravan seems to be here looking specifically for you."

With her words I stood and followed her down the hill to the caravan with my guard eyebot right behind me. We got to the caravan outside the saloon and a man walked over us. He was a gruff looking guy with a graying bread and eyes kind enough to dull his rough features.

He looked me over and with a huff pulled out a letter. The letter was short and brief.

To James Faber

In this caravan are multiple pieces of tech and such that I have acquired on my way to Vegas. I think you'll be thrilled at some of the stuff I sent you as it's all powerful crap, extremely complex or exceedingly rare. With it I also sent some science books and holotapes. I hope this helps with the little project I read about on your terminal.

From Courier 6

P.S. Payment is to be made in advance tech, armor, and weaponry.

The letter revealed some things I hadn't known. One, she had hacked my terminal and read everything on it. I'd have to punch her for that, even if it'd be like a toddler to a grown adult. Two, she liked my plans enough to help me. Three, I owed her big time. If she claimed something was powerful, complex, or rare I'd probably get a lot out of it. The science knowledge she had sent would be even better as I could learn the complexities of this world better.

With the letter read I folded it up and put it away as the gruff man handed me a paper to sign. The paper stated that the delivery had been made, nothing was damaged and that the recipient had gotten it. I had no way of knowing if something was damaged so I signed the paper and had Brigid help me take the tech to my place.

It took us a few days to sort all the stuff out but I immediately got to work on one piece of tech I found. It was a familiar eyebot. He hadn't been hard to fix and before activating him I pulled all data from him and copied it before erasing what I had done. Upon activation I activated ED-Es companion protocol. The little eyebot wasn't as combat capable as my custom but he was certainly tougher and had a personality. With him and my guard I would be well protected at all times even if ED-E was still loyal to the enclave.

I had finished my production line and had started making even more eyebots while looking through the tech the courier had sent. Most was rarer tech that was broken but there were choice item within. I easily recognized the MF Hyperbreeder Alpha from Novac. In a box under a vault 11 jumpsuit was medical tech and holographs from the vault 11 clinic and beneath that the differential pressure controller.

There was also the Q-35 matter modulator rapped in cloth with tech scrap tied to it to hide it. Alongside the plasma gun were two laser rifles, a lot of microfusion cells and lots of junk from destroyed bots.

After going through the items I pulled out the valuable and rare stuff and with Brigids help reverse engineered it all. With the microfusion and plasma tech I got I quickly integrated it into Brigids third eye which functioned as her laser. It was just above her brow and looked like a large red jewel. The previous laser was equal to a laser rifle but the new one could fire faster and longer with much higher damage.

The rest of the tech was mostly junk and damaged stuff so I set it aside to focus on my expansion. With the new lines running I had many more bots to use and sell so I set up a route between multiple different scrap areas and then remade a line to make cheap Mr. Handys. Mr.Handys were expensive compared to eyebots as they had much more in them, all had a basic personality module, and had more expensive sensors.

All of the handys would be equipped with a laser, a buzzsaw, and a claw. I didn't care for the agility of the eyestalks so I removed them in place of swiveling eyes on the body. They were more compact and less fragile.

It was another three weeks of basic work before Brigid decided she was ready to leave. I had her take 5 Handys, her custom built bots, and 20 eyebots. With those forces she could easily take the test site and make it ours.

A few days after she left I finally got an update on Big MT from the eyebots I had sent. It was just like it's ingame counterpart but bigger. The place was untouchable right now but I was still going to try getting something from the surface. In an attempt to do so I built a new eyebot, it was equipped with the most powerful and advanced sensors I had at my disposal. After sending it there I began my next expansion stage.

If I wanted the area to be secure enough to efficiently build a robot army I'd need to drag the NCR back into the area. For that I'd need to clear the deathclaws out of quarry junction, take back the NCRCF, take Black mountain and maybe even use the bots to somehow create farms.

The farming would probably be pretty easy as with tech, the quarry, and trade, I could probably set up green houses and such. Everything else would need a small army to do. The first on my list was the quarry, it would bring the NCR into the area and from there I could take the correctional facility then black mountain.

I first sent a group of bots to turn Jean skydiving into a small FOB to secure the area and then began work on the baseline needs of the farm I was going to set up. The biggest problem for farming in the wasteland was radiation and water. The radiation would be easy enough to handle by removing radioactive materials from the area and spraying things with radaway if needed.

The other problem was water. I wanted to use an already known technique from a galaxy far, far away. The water farms of tattooine used large refrigerator pilots to condense and collect moisture from the air.

I already knew of cryogenic tech but nothing like what I needed existed yet. First I took care of powering the system I would build. It was basically a large thermal nuclear generator running on expensive vaporizer coolants. With power easily taken care of I then began making the cooling pilon.

The cooling towers had proven a difficult challenge as I couldn't get them efficient enough to use. In the end I settled on a tall refrigerator pilon with multiple mesh walls to both catch debris and for water to condense on. The condensation pilon would begin construction as soon as materials got to the area that the bots were already preparing for greenhouses.

With that done I was forced to wait till my army was ready. With that being the case I began the process of building sentry bots for my army. I didn't have a line to construct them, and didn't have the materials to build many so I cut them down. The bots I ended up making were less sentry bot, more moving turret. They were more or less a large electric engine on wheels with an automatic laser and a powerful plasma gun.

I didn't have the resources for something like a minigun or .50cal machine gun but I could make a large plasma cannon based on the tech I already had. I had gone for plasma as it did way more damage than lasers but the plasma was mush slower than pretty much all other projectile weapons. I would also need to get the people of Sloan to man these plasma cannon bots as while robots could effectively wield lasers and guns they were to slow with plasma trajectories.

I would need humans to aim use them to account for trajectory and speed as I didn't doubt that deathclaws could dodge plasma blasts. This was still not enough so I set off for the saloon where I hoped to find someone. When I arrived I found him where he could usually be found. I sat beside him and watched as he took a swig of sunset sarsaparilla.

"Hey Easy Pete"

"Hello youngin' lookin to appropriate my explosive again? Don't blame ya, I'd do same if I were you." He responded to my greeting. I'd tried to get his explosives a few times before but with what I guessed was a charisma score of 2 I had no chance.

"Look I'm going to get those explosives from you because I have a good reason now." To that he simply raised an eyebrow.

"I'm planning to take back the quarry, I have lots of bots with lots of firepower to throw at them but they are enough. I plan to make a minefield and gun them down as they cross it. For me to have enough mine I need your stash. What my bots have collected isn't enough and microfusion cell bombs don't have the power or range needed."

The old man simply sat there a contemplative look on his wrinkly face. After a minute he looked at me and stood. "C'mon youngin' if we got bombs to make than we need to get the explosive to make with."

He led me to his house then outback to a bare patch of dirt and handed me a shovel. "Start diggin' the full stash is under that dirt."

With a sigh I started digging. After a few hours I fully revealed six ammo boxes. I pulled them out and dusted them off, revealing all of them had a lock on the latch. Easy Pete disappeared for a minute into his house and came back out with a large key chain covered in keys.

Haven't gotten in the stash in a bit so you're gonna have to try em all. After another hour of going through keys all boxes were unlocked so I opened them to reveal a lot of explosives. We sorted them out and I inventoried them. 4 plasma grenades, 2 plasma mines, 7 frag grenades, 5 frag mines, 10 40mm grenades, 1 missile, 1 pulse grenade and mine, 3 timer bombs, 10 powder charges, 32 dynamite, and one C4 with detonator.

We both sat stunned at his sorted collection of explosives. "Damn, forgot I had that C4."

I looked at him incredulously, how do you forget something like that. He saw my look and responded. "I'm gettin' old boy, can't 'spect me to remember everything."

We loaded everything onto a wagon from a neighbor and hauled it to my house to make some dangerous shit. Over the next few hours we made 4 plasma mines totaling 6 now. 7 frag mines totaling 12. We converted the time bombs into mines, and made 32 more powder charges from the dynamite. Alongside my previous mines I now had 64 mines and some projectile explosives.

With the mines made all I had to do before moving on the quarry junction deathclaws was organize my army.

I went to bed that night with a smile on my face as I felt much more confident in annihilating those overgrown lizards.
