"Where's Maria?" Nevaeh didn't even care about Gerardo's drama. Her only focus was finding Alex.
Gerardo weakly lifted his head and saw her. He just shook it, his voice totally cold. "She's gone. What do you want?"
"I'm going to find her," Nevaeh said, already turning to leave.
Just as she reached the door, he grabbed her arm, his voice suddenly going soft. "Nevaeh, I'm begging you. Leave your mom alone. She's innocent in all this. If you won't help us, at least don't make it worse."
Nevaeh spun around, her dark eyes locking onto his, and let out this icy laugh. "Innocent? Gerardo, are you even a man? She did that to you, and you're still defending her? Have you completely lost your mind?"
Tears were streaming down Gerardo's face, but he kept shaking his head. "It's not her fault. She did it for Noreen. It's my failure that I can't save my own daughter. She's just a woman… it's not easy for her."
Hearing that, Nevaeh felt her whole worldview just crack.
