Chapter 3: The Humble Table of Unyielding Mundanity
With Wednesday's grudging cooperation and the unstable Visions power, Alex turned his attention to his next recruit. He had to get another person, someone whose trust he could actually earn, to stabilize the power he already had. The System, ever helpful and unhelpful in equal measure, gave him a new notification.
[Novia System: Citizen identified: Enid Sinclair. Potential for Transformation power copy. Trust level required: 100%.]
The bar was at a promising 5%. A glimmer of hope. He could work with 5%. He used the System's tracker, a tiny arrow that floated in his vision, and set off into the forest once more. It was a damp, quiet morning, and the forest air smelled of pine and wet earth. He followed the arrow for a few minutes before he heard it: a strangled, frustrated cry.
He pushed through a thicket of bushes and found her in a small clearing. Enid Sinclair, the brightly colored werewolf, was standing in the middle of the clearing, her hands clenched into fists, her body trembling. Her fingernails were a riot of color, but they were long and pointed, like claws. Her face was contorted in a mix of rage and despair. A broken tree branch lay nearby, a casualty of her uncontrolled rage, the wood splintered and twisted. She let out a frustrated growl, a sound that was half human, half animal, and dropped to her knees, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs.
This isn't just about a power. She's in pain. I'm a fan, I know her story. I know how much she wants to please her family, to be a "real" wolf. I can help her. His reflection was a clear, concise thought that cut through the absurdity of the situation. He wasn't here just for a power. He was here to save a person. This wasn't a game. It was a mission.
"Hey," he called out gently, his voice soft, not filled with the usual "get away from me" tone she was used to from the other outcasts. "You okay?"
Enid, startled, spun around, her eyes wide, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her long, colorful nails were a terrifying contrast to her vulnerable expression. "Who are you?" she asked, a defensive edge in her voice, but a flicker of hope in her eyes as he offered a hand, a simple gesture of human kindness.
Alex kept his voice low and steady. He had to be careful. One wrong word and she'd run.
"How did you know?" Enid asked, her voice small and broken, as she took his hand. "No one's ever seen me... like this."
"I just... I've seen a lot of things," Alex said, sidestepping the truth. "But what I see now is someone who needs a friend, not a judge." He reflected on his words, hoping they sounded authentic. He had to be a genuine human being, not just a walking-talking System interface. He had to be the friend she was looking for.
[Novia System: Warning. Ally misclassified. Subject Enid Sinclair currently identified as 'Furry Menace'.]
A small, glitchy pop-up appeared in the corner of his vision. Alex almost laughed out loud but stifled it. The absurdity of it all was almost too much. He had to maintain his serious demeanor while his internal thoughts were in a state of chaotic amusement. He was a professional. He was a Sovereign. And the System was a goddamn jokester.
His face twitched, a battle between empathy and the absurd. A furry menace? Seriously, System? You're killing the mood here. He tried to hide his grin behind his hand, and Enid, confused, asked what was so funny.
"Nothing," he managed to say, his voice a little strained. "Just... a bug. In my vision. It's a… a known issue."
As Alex spoke, a faint, metallic hum emanated from the surrounding air, an anomaly that the System immediately flagged.
[Novia System: Anomalous energy detected. Source: Unidentified.]
This was new. A new type of signal that wasn't portal-related. It was a different kind of buzz, a low, ominous vibration that felt like a prelude to something terrible. He shook his head, trying to ignore it. One problem at a time. The problem in front of him was a crying, heartbroken teenager who needed help.
Enid looked at him, a tear rolling down her cheek. "A place where I can be... myself?" she whispered. The tension in her shoulders visibly eased, and the mood shifted from despair to a quiet, fragile hope. She looked at him with a sense of wonder, her gaze full of a trust that was so much more than zero.
Enid agreed to join. It was a quiet, sincere agreement, given with a simple nod and a single, genuine smile. And when she did, Alex felt a surge of warmth and stability, a feeling that had been missing since he first copied Wednesday's power.
[Novia System: Ally recruited: Enid Sinclair. Current Trust: 80%. Power Stability Boost: Wednesday's Visions power at 80% stable.]
Alex stared at the message, a wave of relief washing over him. He felt a clarity he hadn't before, the Visions power no longer a cold, flickering thing, but a solid, reliable force within him. The System's mechanics were becoming clearer. It wasn't about him being a chosen one. It was about him being a leader, a friend, someone worthy of trust. It was about earning, not taking.
Enid smiled for the first time, a genuine, blinding smile that lit up her entire face. "You're a good person, Alex," she said.
His chest felt warm, a feeling he hadn't felt in a long, long time. She's right. The System needs me to be a good person. That's the real resource I need to cultivate. It's not about the power. It's about the people. This was the first pay-off for the foreshadowing clue that his powers were tied to his recruits' emotions. It was a tangible, undeniable confirmation.
"Thank you, Enid," he said, his voice a little thick with emotion. "You have no idea how much that means to me."
Hand in hand, they walked towards the portal, Novia's gate to a new world. The air was no longer heavy with failure, but light with the promise of a new beginning.
"Don't worry," Alex said, squeezing her hand. "You're home now." The words felt true, a promise he was making to her, and to himself. He wasn't just a Sovereign. He was a refuge.
