Chapter 15 - Episode 15 — “Outclassed”

Level: 9

1:27 AM — Midtown Rooftop

Zack felt it mid-step.

Not hunter tech.

Not Kael.

He froze.

Pressure dropped over the city like gravity shifted.

He turned slowly.

A figure stood on the opposite edge of the rooftop.

No dramatic entrance.

No flex.

Still.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Long black coat moving slightly in the wind.

Silver eyes.

Not red.

Silver.

Zack's body reacted instantly.

Steel formed automatically.

Every nerve on edge.

THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME

RANKED ENTITY DETECTED

ESTIMATED TIER: UNKNOWN

The figure spoke calmly.

"You are growing too quickly."

Voice deep.

Controlled.

Not angry.

Just factual.

Zack stepped forward.

"And you are?"

The figure's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Level 42."

Zack's stomach tightened.

That wasn't a guess.

That was a statement.

"Name's Darius," he said calmly.

"And you're disrupting balance."

No Warm-Up

Darius moved.

Zack didn't see it.

He just felt impact.

Fist hit his ribs.

Steel cracked audibly.

Zack flew across the rooftop and smashed into a water tower.

Pain exploded.

Regeneration kicked in instantly.

But slower than usual.

Different.

Darius walked toward him.

No rush.

"You rely on regeneration," Darius said calmly.

"Let's test that."

He grabbed Zack by the throat.

Lifted him.

Then—

Slid a blade from his coat.

Not normal steel.

Black.

Strange.

He drove it into Zack's side.

Zack screamed.

The wound didn't close.

REGENERATION SUPPRESSED

Zack's eyes widened.

Darius twisted the blade slightly.

"Adapt."

He threw Zack across the roof again.

Zack hit concrete hard.

Vision blurry.

Blood pooling.

He tried to stand.

Legs unstable.

Level 9.

Versus 42.

The gap was enormous.

Forced Learning

Darius didn't rush the kill.

He circled.

"You hunt feeders and think you're ascending."

He kicked Zack into a rooftop AC unit.

Metal bent.

Zack coughed blood.

Steel flickering inconsistently.

"Ranked blood is not enough," Darius continued.

"You need combat density."

Zack forced himself up.

Barely.

He rushed.

Not smart.

Desperate.

Darius sidestepped effortlessly.

Backhanded him into the roof ledge.

Concrete cracked.

Zack nearly fell over the edge.

Darius grabbed his collar.

Held him suspended above a 20-story drop.

"Understand this," Darius said quietly.

"If I wanted you dead, you would already be ash."

Zack glared at him through blood.

"Then why not?"

Darius studied him.

"Because you're interesting."

He pulled Zack back onto the roof.

Dropped him hard.

Zack couldn't stand now.

Blade wound still open.

Healing suppressed.

Darius stepped closer.

Leaning down slightly.

"You will not reach Level 20 without permission."

He placed the blade lightly against Zack's throat.

"Grow quietly."

Then he withdrew the blade.

And stepped back.

Zack tried to move.

Failed.

Darius turned toward the edge.

Paused.

"One more lesson."

He snapped his fingers.

The suppression effect ended.

Regeneration surged violently.

The wound sealed in seconds.

Pain fading.

"You can't out-heal what you can't survive," Darius said calmly.

Then he stepped off the rooftop.

Gone.

Aftermath

Zack lay there breathing heavily.

Body shaking.

Level unchanged.

But pride shattered.

He was not strong.

He was barely alive.

Notification appeared slowly.

SURVIVED HIGH-TIER ENCOUNTER

COMBAT DENSITY REQUIRED

GROWTH RATE TEMPORARILY INCREASED

He rolled onto his side.

Staring at the skyline.

Level 9.

And he just got dismantled.

Not by hunters.

Not by Kael.

By someone who barely tried.

Zack clenched his fists.

Not in rage.

In clarity.

He needs more than hunting weak targets.

He needs escalation.

End Message

WARNING

RANKED HIERARCHY ENGAGED

Zack stood slowly.

Wiped blood from his mouth.

"Level 42…"

Good.

Now he knows the ceiling.

End of Episode 15.
