Chapter 20 - Episode 20 — “Overreach”

Level: 10

11:43 PM — Abandoned Rail Tunnel

Zack chose it carefully.

Isolated.

Concrete.

No civilians.

He had tracked a mid-tier predator for three nights.

Level estimated: 18–20.

Aggressive.

Feeds on gangs.

Leaves survivors terrified.

Perfect density.

He wasn't hunting to win.

He was hunting to trigger synergy.

Calculated risk.

He stepped into the tunnel.

Steel already half-formed.

"I know you're here," he said calmly.

The air shifted.

A figure dropped from the ceiling.

Tall.

Lean.

Red eyes glowing faintly.

"You're the rumor," it said softly.

"Level?"

Zack didn't answer.

The vampire smiled.

"Smells like ten."

Correct.

No Warm-Up

The Level 18 moved first.

Faster than Kael's sparring.

Cleaner than the Level 15 woman.

Zack blocked the first strike.

Barely.

Second hit caught him in the jaw.

Steel cracked slightly.

He didn't panic.

He waited.

Watched patterns.

The vampire rotated right before lunging.

Anchored left heel.

Same micro-pattern he'd seen before in ranked fighters.

Zack countered.

Clean hook.

Solid impact.

The vampire slid back.

Grinned.

"Good."

Then it accelerated.

Three-hit combination.

Zack blocked two.

Third broke through.

Ribs dented.

Pain sharp.

He didn't retreat.

He stepped in and bit.

Deep.

Hard.

High-tier blood flooded in.

Heat exploded through his body.

System triggered instantly.

EXTREME RISK DETECTED

ABSORPTION SYNERGY ACTIVATED

Zack's vision sharpened.

Movement clarity spiked.

He saw the vampire's next strike before it happened.

He mirrored the footwork perfectly.

Countered.

Uppercut.

Cracked bone.

The vampire stumbled.

Shock on its face.

For five seconds—

Zack moved like Level 18.

Not strength.

Movement.

Timing.

Efficiency.

Then—

It faded.

Heat cooled instantly.

SYNERGY WINDOW CLOSED

Zack's body lagged half a second.

That's all it took.

The Level 18 drove a knee into his sternum.

Steel collapsed inward.

Then—

A full-force punch to his throat.

Zack hit the tunnel wall so hard concrete exploded.

He tried to stand.

Too slow.

The vampire grabbed him by the skull.

Slammed him into the ground repeatedly.

Regeneration flickered.

But he'd burned too much energy.

Synergy drained him hard.

The vampire lifted him by the collar.

"You overreached."

It drove claws through his abdomen.

Clean through.

This time—

Regeneration hesitated.

Slower.

Vision blurred.

System flashing warnings.

CRITICAL DAMAGE

ENERGY DEPLETION

REGENERATION EFFICIENCY REDUCED

The vampire leaned close.

"You're not ready."

It raised its hand to finish him.

And then—

Impact.

A body crashed into the vampire from the side.

Kael.

They rolled across the tunnel floor.

Kael struck clean.

Forced separation.

The Level 18 recovered quickly.

Glared at Zack.

"You're lucky."

It retreated into darkness.

Gone.

Aftermath

Zack lay on the ground.

Breathing shallow.

Healing painfully slow.

Kael knelt beside him.

"You forced it," Kael said calmly.

Zack coughed blood.

"Yes."

"You nearly died."

"Yes."

Silence.

Kael studied him.

"You felt the mimicry."

Zack nodded weakly.

"Five seconds."

Kael's jaw tightened slightly.

"You tried to extend it."

Zack didn't deny it.

He had.

He pushed it.

Tried to hold onto the borrowed movement.

That's why energy crashed.

Kael helped him sit up.

"You cannot force evolution without capacity."

Zack's breathing stabilized slowly.

Wounds sealing gradually.

But this one hurt deeper.

He felt it.

Energy reserves lower than before.

System flickered.

WARNING

SYNERGY OVERUSE PENALTY ACTIVE

TEMPORARY GROWTH RATE REDUCED

Zack closed his eyes.

Penalty.

He pushed too far.

Rooftop — Later

Zack stood weakly.

Still healing.

Level unchanged.

Still 10.

He stared at the skyline.

He tasted Level 18 movement.

For seconds.

And it almost killed him.

But now—

He knows it's possible.

Not fantasy.

Real.

He just needs capacity.

Final Notification

EVOLUTION PATH UPDATED

SYNERGY CAPACITY MUST INCREASE BEFORE EXTENSION

Zack exhaled slowly.

He almost died.

Good.

Now he knows the limit.

End of Episode 20.
