Chapter 2 - Arrival and unease

The streets outside the terminal weren't quite the same as memory or maps. Tiny shifts in angles made her uneasy, as if the city was rearranging itself around her.

The taxi ride to her flat felt like entering another world. Towering buildings, wet streets reflecting neon lights, and the smell of rain-soaked bread mingled with exhaust fumes. Adaeze watched passersby, the hurried steps, the distant chatter, and felt a strange distance from everything familiar. Even the cab driver's polite conversation barely registered.

A sudden flicker of movement in the rearview mirror caught her eye. A figure? She blinked again. Nothing. The reflection didn't quite match reality. Rain-streaked streets twisted oddly, and the shadow remained, standing where no one could be.

Her stomach churned, not from the cold, but from a premonition she couldn't name. It was a premonition, yes, but not just of danger—of crossing into something unseen
