Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – The First Strike

The night was unnervingly quiet. The city streets, usually humming with life, now felt like a ghost town. Kai and Lira had taken positions on the rooftop of an abandoned building, scanning the streets below. Orion's warnings echoed in their minds—the organization was bigger, smarter, and more ruthless than they had imagined.

"They won't give us time to prepare," Kai muttered, eyes scanning the shadows. "They'll strike fast and hard."

Lira tightened her grip on the umbrella, her resolve unwavering. "Then we'll meet them head-on. We've survived this far together. We can do this."

Kai's crimson glow flickered faintly, the fire in his veins coiling in anticipation.

The Ambush

Without warning, the first wave descended. Black-clad operatives appeared from the alleyways and rooftops, moving with silent precision. Each one armed, each one deadly.

Kai leapt into action, his movements a blur of speed and strength. Fists collided, blades clanged, and rain splashed like bullets around them. Lira didn't hesitate—she grabbed a metal pipe, striking one of the operatives before he could reach Kai.

"You're amazing," Kai muttered, eyes briefly softening as he deflected another attack.

"I told you, I'm not just going to watch," Lira shot back, her determination burning brighter than the rain-soaked city lights.

---

Coordinated Chaos

The operatives advanced with ruthless coordination. Kai found himself facing multiple enemies at once, his body moving instinctively. Each strike was precise, but the numbers were overwhelming.

Lira moved strategically, distracting and disarming attackers, allowing Kai to focus on the ones who were strongest. Their teamwork was becoming seamless, an unspoken rhythm born from trust and countless battles fought side by side.

Kai's True Power

One operative, larger and more aggressive than the others, lunged at Kai with a blade. Kai caught it mid-swing, crimson energy surging through his arms. The fire inside him flared like never before, his strength multiplying with each heartbeat.

"This ends now," Kai growled, striking with unstoppable force. The operative flew across the rooftop, crashing into a wall.

Lira watched, awestruck and worried. "Kai… be careful. Don't push yourself too far!"

Kai's crimson eyes met hers. "I won't… not while you're here."

Victory, For Now

After what felt like hours, the rooftop lay littered with unconscious operatives. Kai and Lira stood side by side, soaked and exhausted, but alive. The first strike had been repelled.

Breathing heavily, Lira leaned against Kai. "We… we did it."

Kai nodded, looking at her with a mix of pride and something deeper—something unspoken that only she could feel. "This is just the beginning. They'll come back stronger."

Lira rested her head on his shoulder. "Then we'll be ready. Together."

And as the rain finally ceased, a sense of quiet triumph settled over them. But beyond the city's lights, shadows moved silently, plotting their next attack. The war was far from over.
