When I opened my eyes again, it was morning, and when I looked at the clock, I saw that it was 08:00.
I immediately got up, took a shower, and bathed. The former owner's father was a smart man; he had separated this house's water system from the others and saved his family from paying at least 100 €$ every time by using a self-made water purification device.
After finishing the shower, I put on new clothes and ate something from the food dispenser. It didn't taste too bad, and at least it filled my stomach.
After eating, I looked at Gloria, who was lying beside me, and thought about what I could do for her. I sat down at my computer right away and began researching the devices needed to heal her.
When I finished, it was already 10:00. I got up immediately, mounted my bike parked next to the car, and left through the garage door.
My destination was the city dump. Why? Because I didn't have the money to buy anything brand new, and I could secretly take some things from there, recycle them, and give them a new purpose. That way, both sides were happy, right?
Half an hour later, I arrived at the back of the dump and prepared to sneak inside.
I climbed over the fence and entered. Without being caught, I gathered everything I needed inside, placed them into my inventory, and by the time I returned to my bike, it was already 17:00.
I immediately returned home. On the way back, I ate another meal that didn't taste so good, then finally got back to the house.
Once inside, I went straight to my workbench and began working. By midnight, I had finally built a chamber that would keep Gloria alive for the time being. I named it the "Life Chamber."
Thanks to this chamber, Gloria would be stabilized enough to heal. Before I could build the surgical chamber to truly cure her, I had to make sure her body was prepared for surgery. This chamber would get her body ready.
Once that task was finished, since I still wasn't tired, I decided to prepare a few things for myself. I pulled out a few items from my inventory.
I immediately began examining the eyes and neural interface implants I had taken from the scavs. And no, I wasn't going to add any cyberware to my body besides the neural interface implant. Instead, I would make upgrades to my clothing.
I continued working, and by the time I was done, it was already 10:36.
During that time, I had accomplished two things. The first was developing a lens capable of doing everything an eye implant could.
The second was using the neural interface implants I had examined, along with other materials, to create for myself a sturdier, more advanced neural interface implant with better hardware and software.
I immediately put on the lens, stored the neural interface implant in a box, checked on Gloria, and then hopped on my bike to head toward Viktor Vektor, so he could install it for me.
An hour later, I was standing in front of a place called Misty's Esoterica, holding the box in my hand.
I walked inside. A woman about 165–170 cm tall, with short, slightly wavy dark brown hair and green eyes, looked at me.
I stepped forward and said with a slight smile, "Hello, beautiful lady. I was told I could reach Viktor Vektor here. May I speak with him?"
She smiled lightly and said, "Of course. If you'll allow me, I'd like to let him know first."
I nodded and waited until she informed me and pointed me in the right direction.
Before leaving, I smiled at her again. "See you again, beautiful woman. Something tells me that will be very soon."
Misty giggled at my words and replied, "Oh, don't say that."
I then left through the back door, heading down the stairs that caught my eye.
I passed through the doors and approached a man watching a boxing match. When he saw me, he paused the match and asked what I wanted.
I handed him the box and told him I wanted the neural interface implant installed.
He looked at the implant I had made, then at me, and nodded.
After about an hour and a half of work, Viktor completed the procedure and woke me up.
When I opened my eyes, I saw Viktor watching the boxing match again.
Seeing me awake, he stopped the match and looked at me. "Well, got anything to say? Maybe start with where you found this implant that doesn't exist anywhere on the market. Be honest, kid—I'm not looking to get in trouble."
I looked at him and replied, "You don't need to worry about trouble. I made this implant myself, from parts I gathered here and there."
I got up from the table and checked both myself and the implant while he watched me.
"Like people say, old man—you're good at what you do. But stop looking at me like that. I'm completely straight, and I'm only into women. So, you and other men don't stand a chance." I said with a smirk.
Viktor twitched at my words. "Just pay and get out."
I grinned at him, paid the 2500 €$ he asked for, and left.
When I returned to Misty's shop, I found her sitting there. She turned around when she saw me.
I smiled and said, "Looks like life's giving me another chance. See, beautiful lady, we meet again. Even life is giving us opportunities."
Misty giggled at my words and replied with a playful smile, "Seems like life is still being cruel to me. It keeps comparing a lamb like me to a wolf like you."
I grinned at her words and chatted with Misty for about half an hour before leaving.
After leaving her, the lens HUD showed that it was 13:00. I headed off to a store to buy better clothes for myself.
I picked up a few outfits I liked and returned home. When I arrived, the time was already 15:23, so I began modifying the clothes I had bought.
By 01:00, I had finished my work. I ate something quickly, went to bed, and fell asleep.
At 08:00 the next morning, I woke up again. I took another shower, ate something, and pulled out some normal clothes I had stored in the wardrobe where I had placed last night's finished outfits. I then went to an empty corner of the garage and took a scrap Quadra Type-66 "Javelin" out of my inventory.
I planned to dedicate the whole day to working on it. But before I could get started, a call appeared on my HUD screen.
The caller was none other than Regina Jones. I let out a deep breath and answered.
Regina: "Hey Kurt, you bastard! I gave you a job, and I haven't been able to reach you for four days. Now that I finally have, tell me why you didn't show up for the job after taking the advance? Jack says he had to do it alone because you didn't come, and he got injured." she said angrily.
"Hey Regina, what kind of attitude is that? You should be the one giving me answers, not the other way around!" I snapped back harshly.
"And that Jack... Tell him that when I find him, I'll empty an entire magazine into his face until there's nothing left of his skull!"
Regina was shocked by my harsh, furious tone. She realized something was wrong and asked, "Hey Kurt, what do you mean? Tell me clearly."
I immediately explained to her that I had gone to the job site, met up with that Jack guy, and that we had completed the job together. During the mission, I got shot, and instead of taking me to a ripperdoc, Jack took my gear and belongings and sold my body to a group of scavs. I added that the knife wound on Jack was from when I tried to resist while injured.
When Regina heard this, her face turned pale, and she asked if I had any proof. I immediately sent her a video of Jack making a deal with the scavs over my body.
The video had been recorded by the scavs, most likely to blackmail him into supplying them with bodies. There was no audio, but anyone watching could clearly understand what had happened.
After watching the video, Regina apologized and said Jack would never breathe again in Night City.
As an apology, she transferred me 3000 €$ for the previous job's pay, plus an extra 1000 €$.
She then told me to call her if I wanted more work and ended the call with another apology.
After the call ended, I immediately returned to the car and began working on restoring it. This car wouldn't be finished in a day, but I would keep working until I got it the way I wanted.
I worked on it until 19:00, then took a break to eat. Afterward, I sat at my workbench and began making a few weapons and tools for myself using my inventory.
At midnight, just as I was about to head to bed, I heard a sound.
I looked over and saw that it was Gloria. She was looking at me. I rushed to her side.
Gloria: "Where am I? This doesn't look like a hospital. Who are you?" she asked curiously.
I smiled at her and introduced myself. "Hello, I see Sleeping Beauty has finally awakened. Ah, how rude of me... I'm that rogue wolf prince every woman dreams of. Which makes you my Little Red Riding Hood, doesn't it?" I said.
She stared at me with a blank expression. Without dragging it out, I said, "Alright, Red, here's the truth. I'm a mercenary. My name is Kurt Boz. I saved you from the scavs—along with myself." I then explained everything that had happened.
As I spoke, her eyes widened. She cursed a few people, then asked me about her daughter. I told her I didn't know her daughter and that since the day I'd taken her from the scavs, she had been in my home for four days.
When Gloria heard this, she said she had to reach her daughter immediately. I told her if she gave me a number, I'd call and bring her daughter here.
She gave me a number.
I dialed it right away. On the other end, I heard Davina Martinez's voice, and I handed the phone to Gloria, telling her someone wanted to speak with her.
It was then I realized this world wasn't the same. In this world, there was no David Martinez—only Davina Martinez.
Gloria and Davina spoke on the phone. No matter how much Davina insisted, Gloria didn't give her the address and said she would call her later.
I looked at her and asked, "Why didn't you tell your daughter the address? If you're worried about me, I don't care as long as she doesn't wreck the place. Or maybe you want us to have some alone time together, you naughty Red? I wouldn't mind that either—I'd prefer it, actually." I said with a playful grin.
Gloria heard my words and smiled faintly. She explained she didn't want to give her daughter false hope if she didn't have much time left, and that if she were going to die, she only wanted to hear her daughter's voice one last time.
I nodded and told her not to be so pessimistic. If she rested properly and her body recovered, the surgical chamber would be able to completely heal her.
She asked if I was serious. I showed her the chamber she was currently in, as well as the plans for the surgical chamber and how it worked.
Hearing this, she brightened up and immediately called Davina again. Just as she was about to give her the full address, I told her to have Davina come in the morning instead. If she came now, I wouldn't let her in, because both of us needed rest. Gloria relayed this to her daughter and didn't give the address, promising instead to send it in the morning.
I took the phone from her hand and placed it on the table next to the chamber. I kissed her forehead gently and said, "Sleep. Tomorrow morning, you'll see your daughter. That's why you need to rest."
She looked at me with lightly flushed cheeks, surprised, and nodded.
I was also surprised at what I had done, but before Gloria could notice, I stepped away from her side, lay down in my bed, and fell asleep, wondering what other changes this world might hold.
