Grace's POV
"Do you want to help me?" Carlos's voice came through the phone.
"Mm-hmm," I answered softly. "I'm not sure what's bothering you, but judging by how wasted you sound, it's probably something you'd rather not discuss, right?"
"Exactly," Carlos confirmed. "I don't want you mixed up in my mess, Grace. I need you... and our baby to stay safe."
"Right, but maybe I could help you some other way... you know... something that might make you feel better tonight?" I suggested. I was dropping hints, secretly hoping Carlos would sweep me off my feet and take me back to that apartment where we'd been together last night.
Carlos might have been intoxicated, but he still seemed sharp enough to understand what I meant. "I need you here with me, Grace. I feel completely lost without you nearby."
"W—Well, let me just grab my things and I'll head over to your place," I said.
"No, that's too risky," Carlos declined. "It's already late at night, let me come get you."
