Chapter 5 - Could it get any worse?

It was a slightly overcast day that I woke up to, my body was raring to go, and it felt like I was containing a nuclear reactors amount of energy needing to be used. Getting out of bed I made my way to the kitchen and using my control over my strength, I actually ate and got ready without damaging a single thing.

Feeling quite chuffed at my results from yesterday's training, it seemed like today was going to be a good day. Maybe today I could try out the limits of my super speed, yesterday's result from the single time I used it showed that it would probably take a bit more adjustment than strength.

It comes down to whether my brain could keep up with the increase in speed and be able to perceive the change in perception at such high speeds. Assuming that the ability to function at super speed was due to the increase in performance of my muscles. Then it would only make sense that the growth would not only affect my legs, as the ability to utilise the enhanced muscles would also need an increase in my nervous system and therefore how my brain would function and adjust.

Well that was in theory, I will probably need to give it time to adjust to the changes. Tidying my apartment up I headed down to the street and made my way back towards the docks area. Along the way I picked up yet more points of interest and once I had some kind of control I would need to investigate.

This would be a good test of just how the system functions and what these 'Hope Points' mean. Once I had arrived at the same warehouse, I used the same route to get in and surveyed the results of my previous training. There were pieces of wood and metal scattered over the warehouse from my exercises to control my strength, some pieces flung far from the piles they originated from.

Clearing a sufficient amount of space took a while, but soon enough I had a rough track running along the circumference of the warehouse. Eyeballing it showed something probably around 3-400 metres, maybe pushing past that but it was hard to tell.

Thinking back to yesterday I thought of how I had used my super speed, and it seemed that focusing on my muscles and increasing the amount of force was the way to go. But different from yesterday let's start of nice and slow, maybe with a few steps and a slight increase in force limiting the movement to 3-4 steps.

Setting myself up on the line I took a few breaths, bent my legs, focused on my feet, pushing down slightly and..... ran straight into the wall sending out a cloud of dust behind me and a resounding bang echoing around the building.

Standing up from where I lay on the ground after bouncing off the wall, I rubbed my forehead which from the feel of it had a bump already forming. "Alright let's maybe start with a single step, see what happens and go from there," getting back to the line I set myself for a second time.

Focused on my legs and feet and with a slightly stronger than normal push took a single step, my vision blurred for an instant before I came to a stumbling halt. Stopping myself from falling over, I looked behind and realised that with that single step I had traversed nearly the entire length of the warehouse.

"Well no wonder I kissed the wall with my face after moving that fast", pretty glad I hadn't put much more force into the step after those results. Turning around I focused on my movement again and once more it only took an instant to get back to my starting point, though this time it seemed my vision blurred a little less.

'Hmm maybe I need repetitive uses to help my brain to adjust, my nervous system is probably also adjusting to the increase in effectiveness and potential of my muscles now they have improved so much'.

It took probably around another 2 hours to get used to the speed at that minimal level, by that point I was able to chain together around 5 steps before I would start to feel a bit drained mentally. Breaking for 10 minutes between attempts let me recover enough to give it another shot.

Finally, I got to the point at midday that I could continuously use my super speed, granted it was at the smallest fractions of force, but I was optimistic that it wouldn't be too much longer until I could use my full force.

It was around this time that I realised I had been working for hours, yet I was not hungry at all, in fact it felt like I could continue even longer. It seemed a bit off to me at this stage as I was probably burning through a large number of calories and energy. However, as I was thinking that I felt the sun hit my head and the smallest amount of energy I had exerted to this point was refreshed instantly.

Looking up I saw that the clouds had mostly cleared away, some remnants lingered but overall the sky had opened up and the cause of my state was clear. I couldn't feel any fundamental changes, but it was like I had an IV full of caffeine constantly providing me all the energy I could need.

A wide smile spread over my face and I was motivated to push it even further, the lingering aches from my various collisions faded and my head felt the clearest it had since I woke up. Setting up on the starting line I put about ¼ strength into my legs, and I could instantly feel the difference, the initial blurriness I would get with the increase in speed wasn't occurring and if anything, my vision was crystal clear as I moved faster than I had so far.

Letting out a "WHOOP" I pushed myself further, feeling the sun continuously refresh any building mental fatigue. Getting lost in the feeling and entering what I could possibly call the zone I pushed further. Eventually and without noticing I had built up to my full strength yet I stayed in perfect control.

Looking around I could see the particles of dust floating slowly in the air as I moved even faster, the clouds in my wake spread along the track with a path through the middle as I continued along the track. The feeling of moving at such a speed was addictive and I felt tears run down my face from sheer joy.

What I didn't notice though was the results of my actions, if I had taken the time to actually pick up on the size of the wake I was creating, I would probably notice the height it had climbed to. If I was an outside observer I would also have noticed the deformation of the roof overhead, however I did none of those things, and it was only when the sound of tearing metal finally reached me did I stop and see where it came from.

With a sinking feeling in my guts, I noticed the pseudo twister I had created, and realising where this was heading decided it would be a smart thing to rapidly vacate the area. Speeding through the warehouse I jumped through the window and used my new speed to get the hell out of dodge. After I had made enough distance I turned around, and with a view on the dock area saw my twister rip through the roof and subsequently the walls.

After gaining it's freedom however it quickly lost its velocity and died down, though that did not stop it scattering metal, bricks and the old contents of the warehouse in a 200 metre radius around ground zero.

"Ah shit, that's gonna be an issue."
