**Chapter 15: A New Flag on the Horizon**
The system's chime was a quiet, triumphant note in Luffy's mind. *Ding. Under the host's guidance, Usopp has matured, defeated Captain Kuro, shed the title of "Liar," and is now hailed as a hero by Syrup Village. Significant alteration of character trajectory confirmed. +1500 Alteration Points. Current Total: 2500.*
Luffy's internal satisfaction was a private thing. He had guided a soul onto a stronger path and been rewarded for it. Efficiency and compassion, intertwined.
The dust settled in the village square. Usopp stood amidst the cheers, the weight of the rifle in his hands feeling both alien and utterly right. He looked down at his trembling fingers, then at the still form of Captain Kuro, and finally at the faces of the villagers—faces that now shone with admiration and gratitude, not annoyance.
"I… I won?" he whispered, his voice barely audible over the celebration, as if his soul had momentarily left his body in disbelief.
"You did it, Usopp!"
"That was incredible!"
"You're our hero, Captain Usopp!"
The villagers, once his skeptics, swarmed around him, lifting him onto their shoulders in a spontaneous wave of jubilation. The braggart was gone. In his place was a protector. His tall tales had become a stunning, undeniable reality.
"Luffy… Luffy!" Usopp called out, his voice cracking as he was carried past his captain. "Is this real? Did I really do all that?"
Luffy looked up at him, his usual grin softened into an expression of genuine pride. "It's real. You were never weak, Usopp. You just lacked faith in yourself. You've shattered that doubt today. You defeated a sixteen-million Berry pirate through your own wit and will. Your father, Yasopp, wasn't nearly this strong at your age. In many ways, you've already surpassed the man he was." Luffy's voice was firm, leaving no room for argument. "He is a sharpshooter of the Red Hair Pirates. And you… you are the future Greatest Sniper of the Sea, chosen by the Straw Hat Adventure Group. You are a true hero."
Zoro and Nami approached, their expressions a complex mix of respect and newfound camaraderie. They had seen the transformation firsthand.
"So," Luffy said, his grin returning full force. "What do you say? Will you join our Adventure Group? Will you sail with us? The entire ocean can be your stage."
"ME? Of course I'll join! I'll be the captain!" Usopp shouted from his perch on the villagers' shoulders, his old bravado returning but now backed by proven courage.
Luffy laughed, reaching up to playfully push him. "Don't get ahead of yourself! I'm the captain!"
It was then that the old butler, Merry, approached, wringing his hands with emotion rather than anxiety. "If you would all please follow me to the shipyard. The vessel you commissioned… she is ready."
They followed him to the docks. There, sitting proudly in the water, was a caravel of beautiful and sturdy make. Its figurehead was a majestic sheep, and its hull seemed to gleam with promise. It was the *Going Merry*.
"She's beautiful," Nami breathed, her navigator's eye appreciating the sleek lines and obvious craftsmanship.
"The *Going Merry*," Merry said, his voice thick with pride. "Built by the finest shipwrights in Syrup Village. She's designed to handle the fierce weather of the Grand Line."
Luffy turned to the old man. "How much do we owe you? Name the price."
Merry shook his head, a firm, grateful smile on his face. "Not a single Berry. You are the heroes of Syrup Village. You saved our home, our young lady, and our future. This ship is our thanks to you. Please, take her and let her carry you to your destiny."
The gesture was profound, a weighty gift that spoke of a debt that could never be repaid in currency.
"Then, the flag for this ship is decided," Zoro stated, more than asked.
"It's been decided for a long time," Luffy said. He pulled a folded cloth from his pack and shook it out.
A silence fell over the group. This was not a Jolly Roger. There was no skull and crossbones. The flag was a vibrant, sky-blue. Emblazoned upon it was a simple, joyful emblem: a smiling face wearing a straw hat. It was a symbol not of fear, but of freedom and adventure. A declaration that they were not predators sailing to take, but explorers sailing to see, to learn, and to protect.
"The Straw Hat Adventure Group," Luffy announced, his voice ringing with conviction. "We cruise the seas, adventure across the world, and find our own justice. We uphold kindness where we find it and challenge corruption wherever it hides."
The solemnity of the moment was palpable. They were not just forming a crew; they were defining a new concept on the world's oceans.
"Okay, Usopp," Luffy said, clapping the sniper on the back. "Go say your goodbyes. We set sail with the tide."
Usopp found Kaya waiting for him on the dock. They didn't need many words. "Goodbye, Usopp," she said, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "You must come back and tell me all your stories. The real ones."
"I will!" Usopp promised, his voice thick with emotion. "I'll have the best stories you've ever heard!"
As the final preparations were made, the sound of crying echoed down the path. Usopp's three young followers—the Usopp Pirates—ran towards the dock, their faces streaked with tears.
"Captain Usopp! Don't go!" the bravest one cried out.
Usopp looked at them, his heart aching. He knelt down. "Listen… every crew has to sail its own course. The Usopp Pirates… are hereby disbanded!"
The children wailed louder.
"But!" he said, his voice firming. "That doesn't mean it's over! I'll never forget you guys. You're my first crew! Now I'm going to sea, like a true man, to become even stronger! And our separation… it's just to make our next reunion even better! So chase your own dreams, understand?"
It was a painful, necessary lesson. The children, though heartbroken, nodded through their tears, inspired by their captain's resolve.
As the *Going Merry*'s sails were unfurled, a Marine ship arrived to handle the aftermath of the Black Cat Pirates. They rounded up the groggy crew, including a concussed Jango.
"Who was responsible for neutralizing this threat?" the Marine Commander asked the village mayor.
"The Straw Hat Adventure Group!" the villagers chorused without hesitation.
The Commander frowned, perplexed. "Adventure Group? Not pirates?"
"No! They protected us! They saved our village! They fight for what's right!" the mayor insisted, and the crowd roared its agreement.
The report that eventually landed on Fleet Admiral Sengoku's desk was a perplexing one. He read it aloud in his office, where Vice Admiral Garp was noisily devouring a bag of rice crackers.
"'Straw Hat Adventure Group'?" Sengoku muttered, adjusting his glasses. "They claim to 'uphold justice on the seas.' If they seek justice, why not simply join the Marines? It makes no logical sense."
*CRUNCH. CRUNCH.*
"HAHAHAHA!" Garp boomed, spraying cracker crumbs all over Sengoku's prized strategic maps. "That's my grandson for you! A bit of a weirdo, but his heart's in the right place! Don't go putting a bounty on his head just yet, Sengoku!"
Sengoku's eye twitched, a vein throbbing on his forehead. "GARP! NOT AGAIN! Is every major disruption in the East Blue somehow related to your disastrous family?!" He took a deep, steadying breath. "Fine. Since they are, for now, acting in a… *marginally* righteous capacity and have the 'recommendation' of a certain Vice Admiral," he said the word like a curse, "we will withhold issuing a bounty. For now. But they are to be monitored closely."
With that official, grudging tolerance from the powers that be, the *Going Merry* caught the wind. Her new flag, the Jolly Smiler, snapped proudly in the breeze. Luffy stood at the helm, Zoro at the railing, Nami charting their course, and Usopp looking back at his home with a bittersweet heart, ready to aim for the future.
Their ship was secured. Their crew was taking shape. Their purpose was defined. The Straw Hat Adventure Group was officially, and audaciously, underway.
