Chapter 14 - chapter twelve & thirteen

STEP BY STEP APPLICATION (CLASSIC EYELASHES)

Classic lashes are the perfect way to enhance natural lashes. With the classic technique, one individual lash is applied to one natural lash (ratio 1:1) to create a set of longer and thicker lashes. Each extension is meticulously attached using a safe and medical-grade adhesive, creating a seamless blend with your existing lashes. The result is a natural yet enhanced look that opens up your eyes, making them appear brighter and more captivating.

Step by step application of classic eyelash extensions

1. Applying Under Eye Pads: With caution and precision, gently secure under eye pads to protect the lower lashes. Ensure the pads are positioned just below the waterline, avoiding any contact with the eye or waterline area.

2. Priming the Lashes: Using a minimal amount of Primer, thoroughly coat each natural lash near the base where extensions are applied. Be sure to cover the top, bottom, and spaces in between, as this primes the lashes for optimal adhesion.

3. Lash Mapping: Customize the lash design based on your client's preferences and eye shape.

4. Isolation Technique: Using Precision Tweezers, isolate one natural lash at a time to prevent lashes from sticking together. Make sure you are isolating 1 single lash, and there are no baby lashes hidden behind.

5. Extension Placement: Carefully pick up an extension using a second lash tweezer, dip it into the middle of your lash glue drop and slowly remove. Make sure your glue drop is fresh. The extension should go about 1.5-2mm into the glue drop. Next, place the extension directly on top of the isolated natural lash. Maintain a distance of approximately 0.5 to 1 millimeter from the eyelid, avoiding contact with neighbouring lashes. Repeat this process for each isolated lash, ensuring even coverage between both eyes. Only apply lash extensions to healthy, strong natural lashes. Damaged lashes, or baby lashes may not be strong enough to support an extension.

6. Perfecting the Bond: Pay attention to the angle at which you hold the tweezers to mimic the natural lash's curvature. This ensures a secure bond and a seamless blend between the natural lash and extension. Make sure the base of the extension is flush with the natural lash. Make any necessary adjustments to achieve the desired lash placement.

7. Checking for Stickies: Once all the lash extensions have been applied, use the back end of your tweezers to confirm that no lashes are stuck to the under eye pads. File through the lashes with both sets of tweezers to confirm that none are stuck together. Utilize a lash mirror to double-check for any crisscrossed lashes and gently separate them if necessary.

8. Drying and Combing: Thoroughly dry the lashes to allow the adhesive to set. Use a clean, disposable mascara wand to gently comb through the lashes, ensuring there is no tangling or pulling.

9. Applying Super Bonder: To enhance retention and address fumes, flexibility, and durability, apply a small amount of bonder to the bonding point of each lash. This step further strengthens the adhesive bond.

10. Final Check and Clean-Up: Perform a final inspection to ensure the lashes are symmetrical, well-separated, and free from any adhesive residue. Take your time to make any necessary adjustments or touch-ups.

11. Removal of Under Eye Pads: After ensuring the adhesive is fully dried, delicately remove the under eye pads. Pay attention to the client's comfort throughout this process.

STEP BY STEP APPLICATION (VOLUME EYELASHES)

Volume eyelash extensions are a technique in which handmade fans of multiple lightweight and ultra-fine extensions are created using specialized volume tweezers and then applied to individual natural lashes. These extensions are thinner and lighter than classic extensions, allowing for the creation of fuller, more voluminous looks without weighing down the natural lashes. The customizable nature of volume extensions allows lash artists to adjust the number of extensions per fan to achieve various levels of volume, ranging from natural to dramatic.

With proper application and maintenance, volume eyelash extensions can provide long-lasting results, making them a popular choice for clients seeking fuller and more voluminous lash enhancements.

Step by step application of classic eyelash extensions

1. Consultation: Discuss the client's desired volume, density, and style preferences. Assess the client's natural lashes and determine the appropriate length, curl, and thickness of extensions.

2. Preparation: Cleanse the client's lashes thoroughly to remove any makeup, oils, or residue.

Prime the natural lashes to improve adhesive bonding and longevity.

3. Isolation: Use specialized volume tweezers to isolate individual natural lashes, ensuring they are separated and free from any adjacent lashes.

4. Extension Selection: Choose ultra-fine and lightweight volume lash extensions for creating handmade fans. Select the number of extensions per fan based on the desired volume and density (typically 2-6 extensions per fan).

5. Fan Creation: Using volume tweezers, pick up multiple lash extensions from the strip.

Gently fan out the extensions from the base, creating a voluminous fan shape. Ensure that the extensions are evenly spaced and aligned.

6. Adhesive Application: Dip the base of the volume fan into adhesive, ensuring proper saturation without excess glue. Use a gentle tapping motion to remove any excess adhesive from the base of the fan.

7. Placement: Place the volume fan onto a single natural lash, ensuring the base of the fan is securely bonded and aligned with the natural lash line. Use precise placement to ensure the fan sits flush against the natural lash without any gaps.

8. Repeat: Continue creating volume fans and applying them to individual natural lashes, working across the lash line. Adjust the volume and density as needed to achieve the desired look, focusing on adding volume to sparse areas.

9. Finishing Touches: Check for symmetry and balance across the lash line, making any necessary adjustments to ensure a uniform appearance. Seal the adhesive with a lash sealant or mist to promote better retention and longevity.

10. Aftercare Instructions: Provide the client with thorough aftercare instructions, including proper cleansing techniques and maintenance tips. Schedule a follow-up appointment to assess the lashes and address any concerns or adjustments.

By following these detailed steps, you can achieve beautiful and voluminous lash sets using the volume eyelash extension technique. Practice regularly to refine your technique and provide your clients with stunning lash enhancements.

STEP BY STEP APPLICATION (HYBRID EYELASHES)

Hybrid eyelash extensions combine elements of both classic and volume techniques, offering clients a versatile and customizable lash enhancement option. In hybrid application, lash artists use a combination of individual classic extensions and volume fans to achieve a multidimensional and textured look. By strategically placing classic extensions for length and volume fans for added fullness, hybrid lashes provide a balance between natural and dramatic effects. This technique allows for greater customization, catering to clients with varying lash preferences and natural lash characteristics. With hybrid extensions, clients can enjoy the best of both worlds, benefiting from the length and definition of classic extensions and the volume and texture of volume fans. Overall, hybrid eyelash extensions offer a dynamic and adaptable option for enhancing the eyes, providing clients with a unique and personalized lash enhancement experience.

Step by step application of classic eyelash extensions

1. Mapping, Isolation and Use of Handmade Fans: Before applying the handmade fans, our lash artists take the time to map out the lash line. This step involves analyzing the natural lashes and determining the best placement for the handmade fans. By hybrid lashes mapping. we ensure the extensions are strategically placed to achieve the desired look. Once the hybrid lash extension mapping is complete, we proceed with isolating each individual eyelash. This meticulous process allows us to work on one lash at a time, ensuring precision and attention to detail. We delicately place two handmade volume fans on separate lashes, carefully considering the mapping and desired effect. Then, a single classic lash extension is applied on each side of the fans, creating a beautiful and seamless blend. The process is repeated patiently until beautiful hybrid full set lashes are created.

2. Customization and Ratio: One of the great things about hybrid lashes is that they offer flexibility and customization. While the typical ratio is 70 percent volume eyelash extensions and 30 percent classic eyelash extensions, it is not necessary to stick to rigid rules.

We adjust the ratio to achieve the perfect blend of drama and natural effects. If you have sparse lashes, we might use a 60 percent volume lash extension and 40 percent classic eyelash extension ratio to give you the best results.

3. Strategic Application: The position of the hybrid lashes is crucial for achieving the desired look. We follow the rule of isolating each eyelash before attaching extensions, just like classic and volume lash extensions. Our lash artists place two handmade fans on two separate isolated lashes and then apply a single lash extension on either side of the fans. This meticulous process is repeated until all your lashes are beautifully covered, giving you a seamless and cohesive appearance.

4. Drying Time and Glue Caution: We understand the importance of proper glue drying time.

Rushing through the eyelash extensions application process can lead to glue not drying evenly, affecting the overall lash look. That's why we take our time and work strategically. We start by isolating a lash in the inner corner, then move to the middle section, and finally, the outer corner. This allows sufficient time for the glue to dry evenly. Another technique we use is isolating one lash on the right eye and then one on the left eye, ensuring that both eyes have equal lashes for a balanced and beautiful look. By following these steps and giving your lashes the care and attention they deserve, our lash artists create gorgeous hybrid lash extensions that enhance the natural beauty of your lashes. You will surely be amazed by lashes that perfectly blend drama and natural appeal!

Here's what you need to know about aftercare for your hybrid lashes:

• Duration of Hybrid Lashes: With proper care, you can expect your hybrid lashes extensions to last 4- 6 weeks. It's important not to go longer than that, as natural lash growth can cause twisting and closed-off fans. If this happens, a full new hybrid lash set may be needed

• Regular In-Fills: To maintain the beauty of your lashes, it's recommended to schedule infill appointments every 2-3 weeks. A hybrid lash fill appointment keeps your lashes looking fabulous and holds the need for a full set due to excessive lash growth.

• Proper Cleansing: Use a lash extension-safe shampoo and a makeup remover designed for professional eyelash extensions. These products will help remove oil, dirt, and makeup residue, ensuring your lashes stay clean and healthy. This will also help keep the fans open and prevent lash damage from heavy oil buildup.

• Taking Care at Home: Follow these simple tips to take care of your hybrid lashes between appointments:

• Book a hybrid lash fill appointment instead of sporadically booking a full set of lashes.

This is not only cost-effective but also keeps your lashes beautifully maintained.

• Avoid getting your hybrid eyelash extensions wet for the first 24 hours after the treatment. This allows the adhesive to settle properly.

• After that, clean your lashes every day with a lash cleanser. Gently pat them dry and brush through with an eyelash brush.

• When cleansing your lashes, apply only slight pressure and avoid rubbing or picking them. This will prevent unnecessary breakage and premature shedding

Following these aftercare tips recommended by our talented lash artists can improve lash retention and ensure that your hybrid lashes stay beautiful and long-lasting.

The Banana Peel Technique

The Banana Peel Technique is a safe and effective method used to remove eyelash extensions during a lash fill, without causing damage to the natural lashes. This technique involves gently peeling back the extension from the natural lash, mimicking the motion of peeling a banana. It is crucial to exercise caution and precision throughout the process to maintain lash integrity.

Lash remover gel is typically used to remove all lash extensions at once. The banana peel technique removes the individual lash extensions that have grown out. The banana peel technique is done using two pairs of lash extension tweezers.

THE PEEL BACK TECHNIQUE

Step-by-Step to the Banana Peel Technique

1. Gather the necessary tools: You will need a pair of tweezers, preferably with a dominant tweezer and an isolation tweezer. You will not need lash extension remover cream for this process.

2. Assess the lash growth stage: Identify the lashes that have grown out to different stages: one week, two weeks, three weeks, and four weeks. Note that the removal technique is typically reserved for lashes grown out for at least three weeks or more.

3. Begin with one-week grown out lashes: Using your dominant tweezer, locate the extension and grip the natural lash firmly with the second tweezer, the isolation tweezer. Gently peel back the extension in a controlled motion, ensuring not to apply excessive force or damage the natural lash.

4. Proceed to the two-week grown-out lashes: If needed, remove grown out lashes at 2 weeks. Assess weather or not they need to be removed. All lashes grow at different rates therefore some will not need to be removed at the 2 week mark.

5. Address three weeks grown-out lashes: At this stage, the extensions are usually ready for removal. Use the banana peel technique as before, ensuring a gentle yet firm grip on the natural lash. Exercise additional caution if excessive glue is present, as it may require more effort to remove.

6. Tackle four weeks grown-out lashes: Lashes grown out for this duration may exhibit twisting or an uneven appearance. Take advantage of any lifted bases and gently wiggle the extension off using the tweezer. Focus on being extra careful when removing the extensions from the delicate top point of the lash. At the 4 week mark, some extensions can be removed by lifting the base of the extension with one tweezer, and holding the natural lash securely with the other tweezer. Basically this is an upside down version of the usual banana peel technique.

7. Repeat the process: Thoroughly examine each lash individually, identifying any that appear scraggly or grown out. Grip both the extension and the natural lash simultaneously and apply a secure yet gentle pressure to remove the extension. Proceed lash by lash until all desired extensions have been successfully removed.

FOREIGN REFILLS

FOREIGN FILLS ARE ANY FILLS COMING FROM A LASH ARTIST THAT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE ORIGINAL SALON. FOR MOST SALONS, FOREIGN FILLS ARE SUBJECT TO UP CHARGE UP TO A FULL SET AND REMOVAL WHICH WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE LASH ARTIST AT THE TIME OF YOUR APPOINTMENT. WE SCHEDULE ALL FOREIGN FILLS FOR 2 HOURS, BUT THAT MIGHT NOT BE ENOUGH TIME FOR A FULL REMOVAL AND FULL SET SO WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO SERVICE YOUR APPOINTMENT SINCE WE MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO COMPLETE THE SERVICE.

The Lowdown On Foreign Fill Lashes

Clients who come in with an existing lash set from a different lash artist and request a fill are known as foreign fills. They might be from out of town or trying out a new lash artist but still have their previous lashes on. While this might not seem like a huge issue, it can actually be harder to deal with than you think. Lashes are already hard enough, and working over someone else's set adds another layer of difficulty. You might not know exactly where they got the lashes done or who applied them. Maybe they aren't quite as skilled as you are, and the client is experiencing a reaction to the subpar lashing. You might even have to take off the first set before you can begin your service if the lashes are really poor quality — turning the fill into a full removal!

Turning Down A Foreign Lash Fill

Make sure you are comfortable working over another artist's work. Beginner lash artists might not be comfortable accepting foreign fills at this start of their career for several reasons: they might not have a wide range of supplies to accommodate the set that the client comes in with; or they are not experienced enough in removals in case the lashes are stuck or not isolated properly. This is totally fine, just be aware that clients might ask to come in for a fill, so have a polite response outlining why you cannot see them such as:

"I prefer all my lash sets to look the same and not filled in with a different product line for consistency. I can do a full removal and assess your lashes and we can start from scratch to ensure isolating and styling is on point."

You can also put a disclosure about foreign fills on your website or social media so you don't get asked in the first place! After gaining more experience, you can change this policy and bring in even more clients. Even when you're comfortable doing foreign fills, the client's lashes might not be ready for it. Sometimes the client might come in with a set that is stuck or very poorly isolated. In this case it is best to complete a full removal and and send your new client home with a lash serum. Lash serums will help restore the health of the natural lashes.

Typically after a removal and using lash serum for 3-4 weeks the client is ready for a new set again!

Accepting Foreign Fills

If you are ready to take in foreign fills, you should ask for photos of their lashes first. You can assess the previous artist's work, the style of the existing lashes, and decide if you want to take the client on or not. Most artists will charge more for foreign fills if there are a lot of adjustments to be made, so keep that in mind when setting your prices. When a client comes in with a foreign fill treat it as if you were doing a normal fill. Cleanser, go through the extensions to ensure isolation is good. If isolation is poor but you can separate them using tweezers, go ahead and do so. Then proceed on filling the client in. If the client's set is completely stuck, a full removal is recommended, then a full set if the client's natural lashes are in good condition. If they need a break, send them home with lash serum, and reschedule in 3-4 weeks. In case you think the style of their extensions is not what is best for their eye shape, you can communicate with your client what style you think is a better fit. And give them the option of a full removal and new set, or you can slowly transition the shape over the course of multiple fills. Typically this can take 3-4 fills to completely change a style.
