Chapter 3 - chapter 3- Magic

As the group finished with their breakfast all members except for Luna knew what would happen next. As Sylvia and Elaine called for Luna's attention the other members left to pack their belongings and take down the tents for easy transport in their planned journey forth. Still sitting at the bonfire the three sisters began conversing, the two elder sisters answering any question the youngest had.

"So what will happen? Am I going to get awesome powers and cast cool spells all of a sudden?" Luna asked, she had wondered and asked several times how a witch got her powers but her sisters had been pretty vague on the subject up until now. She thought at first they were a bit mean but understood that she had to get a little bit older to understand all the weird magic and things.

"No silly, you won't suddenly fling spells and such. The reason we waited until your fifth birthday is because that is when your body will naturally begin to absorb the essence in nature to begin forming your witch's core."

"What is that?" Luna asked, having heard the term before from her sisters but they never explained what it was.

"A witch's core, more commonly known as a magical core, is a gathering place for essence in your body. We have explored the nature of essence before right?" Luna nodded but halted and thought for a moment and responded that she remember some parts but not all.

"I understand little Luna. The main thing is that so called essence exists in everything, from the air to the earth to the water. In every rock, every bird and every being there exists essence. But the important thing is that most people aren't able to sense or gather any essence into their body, rendering them unable to perceive the immaterial plane." Nodding in understanding, hearing the moment of pause in conversation Sylvia picked up on the important lesson.

"As Elaine explained, this essence exists everywhere, but for a small group of people, they are able to sense and gather it into our body, thus unlocking something we call the path. This is the reason why me, Elaine and our other sisters are able to cast spells and such things. The essence we have gathered into our bodies are transmuted in our core through our blood vessels out into the air. Understanding so far?" Getting another nod in approval they continued with their explanation of how this essence is eternal, that it can't cease to exist, but instead just takes another form. A repetitive cycle of transmuted existence. A few minutes passed in conversation and the duo noticed that the youngest began losing her concentration so they stopped with the theoretical and began instead explaining on why the other members of their family are not here.

"They are setting up the transmute circle for your awakening. They will be here shortly" Sylvia explained. Another thirty minutes passed in comfortable passing as they continued talking and sometimes answering Luna had. But then they could hear footsteps from the side and looking over the trio could see their other family members walking towards them with smiles on their lips, a jovial mood. Luna waived excitedly in greeting and quickly noticed that everyone had their hands behind their backs, hiding something from her view. Before she could ask what they are doing a chorus of happy birthdays from all of her sisters echoed through the glade. A huge smile formed on her lips as she rushed forward and hugged Laufey tightly, being her oldest and favorite sister. She continued around hugging each sister in turn. Getting a few kisses on her cheeks and even a tickle from Amara. Beginning with Laufey she got a beautifully ornate silver dagger with a single sapphire in the pommel and soft light-brown leather as the hilt. From her second oldest sister Sylvia she got a finely made silver necklace with an intricately crafted serpent charm. "This serpent represents our true god, Oroborealis. From his gift we are able to use our essence to make miracles from our power." Sylvia explained. From the twins she got another necklace from the older twin Dany, a silver necklace with a weird symbol hanging from the chain. "We will explain later what it means" Dany simply explained. Having seen the confused expression on Luna. From Maria she got a leather belt which was embroidered with laurels of flora, with stars and moons as design elements. The last pair of sisters, Elaine and Amara, Luna received a ring from each of them. From Elaine she got a gold ring with a sun engraved into the metal, whilst the ring from Amara a silver ring with a moon.

Looking over her new gifts she fiddled with the silver ring placed in her right point finger as her sisters began talking to each other about the ritual.

"We can't wait any longer, Laufey wants us to leave towards the south as fast as possible." Dany's voice interrupted the internal conversation Luna had with herself as she looked towards the large symbol marked into the ground a few meters to her left.

"Please follow me snow bunny" Laufey's voice caught her attention and they hand in hand walked towards the marking. Luna saw as they approached closer she could see four symbols inside one another. A large circle formed the outer ring of the markings, whilst inside a triangle's three points touched the inner side of the ring. A square as the penultimate symbol inside the triangle. The last symbol was another circle inside the square. Completing the weird geometric pattern.

"You will stand inside the center circle whilst we place twelve different offerings at each spoke. Then you will close your eyes and focus yourself and empty your mind, try to look inwards and when you feel a tingling sensation try to persuade this feeling to move towards your chest." Laufey explained. Luna nodded in response and went inside the pattern, centering herself she looked at each of her sisters and then closed her eyes, sighed and began focusing on her inner self.

A few minutes passed in silence with the only sounds being the shuffling of feet around her. But suddenly as her thoughts began wandering a weird sensation tugged in her chest. Opening her eyes she could see that the twelve offerings were aflame and the sudden sound of cracking, like broken glass. But as sudden as the noise cracked the silence the sound returned to nothing, looking around for anything different she noticed the shocked and awed expressions on her sisters. Following their gazes she looked down at her feet where she saw a weird object lodged into the ground. Crouching down she took a closer look and saw a card, about ten centimeters in length and 4 centimeters in width. Picking it up she could see a man walking on a dirt road with a wooden fence on his right. A blue horizon with a few white clouds in the background filled the sky. The man's clothing looked like her sisters and her own traveling cloaks, with a large pointed hat. His face was obscured, but in his hands a long wooden stick was placed in his right shoulder pointing backwards. At the top of the card, in black writing the only words written were "0- The Fool".

Laufey's voice broke the silence with an awed tone, "By the lord, Luna is a Major Arcana".
