I walk into Rio's room and he's awake.
He's sitting up in bed, looking out the window. He hears me come in and he turns.
For a moment, we just look at each other.
"Lina," he says, and his voice is surprised. "You came back."
I don't answer. I just go to the chair next to his bed and I sit down.
"How are you feeling?" I ask.
"Better," he says. "Jennie has been taking good care of me."
The mention of her name makes my jaw clench.
"I need to talk to you," I say. "But first, I need to talk to Jennie."
Rio's expression changes. "What's this about?"
"Just... wait here," I say. I stand up and I go to the door.
---
I find Jennie in the kitchen. She's preparing something for Rio. Fresh juice. Cut fruit. Like a perfect nurse.
"Jennie," I say.
She turns and smiles. "Yes? Do you need something?"
"I need to talk to you," I say. "In Rio's room. Now."
Her smile falters for just a second. Then it comes back.
"Of course," she says brightly.
