Chapter 14 - Dao Demon

Stepping into the red mist, he immediately felt the blood in his veins chill, turning sluggish and cold, while at the same time his skin burned with an unnatural heat.

The contradiction clawed at his senses; a body that was both freezing within and fevered without. It was a grotesque imbalance, something no human frame should ever endure, a sensation so alien it left him momentarily doubting whether he still possessed a body at all.

Keep moving, don't let it mess with your mind. Shao Mingzhu said.

Wang Lin's body jolted, the speed of his heart accelerated at a rapid paste. It was like a car engine about to burst into flames. His first step caused him to have such a reaction, what about the rest?

Stop thinking. This place is a test of will. I don't know what you've gone through in the past, but surely this place couldn't hold you down, right?

Wang Lin's first hardened. He was right. How could he fall in such a place when he still needs to take revenge on the Yellow Moon!

Wang Lin built up the courage and took a step forward, and then another. Eventually he started to run, and Shao Mingzhu's voice sounded in his head, guiding him through the mist.

A little left… A gap of ten metered a head- jump… blocked by rocks, punch through…

Minutes passed by as Shao Mingzhu guided Wang Lin through the Twin Peaks, but everything didn't go as smoothly as he wished.

In the core area of the Twin Peaks, Wang Lin stood in the middle of the two peaks, but the problem was that the eerie power is the strongest here, and no one dared to adventure here.

Shao Mingzhu didn't know this, he only knew a little about the Twin Peaks in history books back in university, talking about how it's the true trial of the dao heart.

Rumor is that there lays a Dao Demon that can implant demon hearts in people, and feed off of the demon hearts.

Dao Demons are humans that were once human but turned into demons by practicing a path of cultivation that is deemed evil by the heavens. Normally they'd die before they have the chance of demonization, but with the fall of the universe, the amount of demons increased rapidly due to the lack of heavenly laws.

But this rumour is over three hundred years old, surely there aren't any Dao Demons here.

"Ahhh!"

Wang Lin's heart skipped a beat when he heard a sudden scream that sounded like a thousand wailing souls.

What was that?

Wang Lin shuddered, and his heart was in his throat.

Wang Lin couldn't see anything because of the heavy red mist, but Shao Mingzhu could.

Suddenly, the black-red soil split apart, and from it burst a massive arm. Its surface was grotesque, for embedded along the length of its flesh were countless faces -twisted and screaming- each mouth frozen wide as if gasping for release.

Yet they were not lifeless carvings; their eyes darted, their lips quivered, and the faces strained as though desperately trying to claw their way free from the arm itself.

The limb pressed against the ground, causing an indent to appear in the dirt, and from the earth a towering figure began to rise.

What emerged was a massive, yet disturbingly lanky human form. Its body was sheathed in raw, exposed flesh, slick with blood that oozed continuously as if the creature itself could never heal. Hollow sockets stared out where eyes should have been, black voids that seemed to drink in the light. The thing's movements were jerky, unnatural, like a puppet dragged up from the abyss.

Shao Mingzhu felt a deep disgust for this Dao Demon. Not because it looks hideous or monstrous, but a deep feeling inside of him seemed to want to slaughter this thing.

This… this isn't my emotion, it's the Heavenly's Palace emotion. Shao Mingzhu thought to himself.

If he wasn't completely certain that the Heavenly Palace was or had something to do with Heaven, he could be sure now.

It does look down right disgusting, but what could I do to help Wang Lin?

A three hundred year old Dao Demon isn't something Wang Lin can handle.

Unlike humans who have a limited life span, Dao Demons can theoretically live forever if they have enough food, it's just that they cultivate extremely slowly. Though their strength in the same realm is almost invincible.

There is a Dao Demon up ahead. It probably knows that you're here and is most likely going to head towards you.

Wang Lin eyelids jumped.

"A Dao Demon? How powerful is it?" Wang Lin asked hurriedly.

He didn't have enough Qi to perform any of his lifesaving formations, so he can only build some weak formations.

Tier Three Dao Demon, but don't worry, I'll try to help you.

How reassuring. He will "Try" to help. Wang Lin complained, and didn't have much hope in his heart.

Shao Mingzhu sat on his golden throne in the Heavenly Palace, and rested the palms of his hands on his chin. He could feel the malice in the Heavenly Palace wanting to strike down that Dao Demon, but it runs on the runes he comprehended, which are only a few basic elemental runes that are taught in university and a couple of old fashion laws of the past heaven.

Should I use the rune left by Zeus? I haven't tried it out, but it's only a tier one rune, so it shouldn't be able to kill a Tier Three Dao Demon, but if it's powered by the golden mist here, it should be a different story.

But if I use this power, will others find out? Or will they even care? After all, a Tier One Rune killing a Tier Three being is unheard of. A powerful Tier One Rune might injure them, but to kill one, you must stack a bunch of Tier One Runes, which only a Tier Two Rune Master can do.

Shao Mingzhu didn't have much time. He can either not take the risk of potentially exposing the new Heaven and let Wang Lin die; or he can try to save him to gain his respect and loyalty.

Each comes at a cost, but Shao Mingzhu really wanted to test out his new powers in the Heavenly Palace, so he decided to save Wang Lin. He was also a little greedy for the knowledge of the Boon Realm, since the runes there are the highest quality Shao Mingzhu has ever seen.

Runes are graded from low to high: Mortal, Earth, Sky, Heavenly, and Boundless.

Mortal runes can be comprehended in daily life like water runes that simply create water out of them.

Earth runes are Runes inside of the planet itself, and are what creates and keeps the planet alive. You can comprehend gravity runes, time runes, space runes, and more from it. It will also give more power to the Mortal Runes.

Sky Runes are runes from special phenomena that occur in the universe randomly, and some might only get to view these runes once in their life.

Heavenly Runes are given by the Heavens themself, and are the most powerful versions of runes that a mortal could wield.

And Boundless Runes are runes outside of Heaven and the universe, and exist in the endless void of chaos, and only gods can comprehend those runes. Though, this is only rumoured, and no one knows as there isn't any text written about it.

There also shouldn't be any god that has comprehended those runes either, so whether Boundless Runes truly exist, no one knows.
