Chapter 3 - My First Pawn

The sunlight warmed my face as I stretched my tiny arms. Two months of daily tasks… and now my body felt different.

"One… two… three…" I counted push-ups. My arms moved smoothly, muscles remembering the routine automatically. Squats followed, legs strong, almost painless. I ran my five kilometer around the yard without stopping, lungs steady, body moving like a fully grown adult.

Ding!

I stumbled inside, wiping sweat from my brow, when I noticed my reflection in the window.

Height… one hundred fifty-two centimeters. Strength… adult-level. My body's grown faster than I imagined. These tasks… they're easy now.

Father appeared in the doorway, arms crossed, smiling.

"Raon… you've grown so strong! Look at you run—faster than any child I've seen!" he said, eyes sparkling with pride.

"Thanks, Dad," I said softly, heart tightening.

He stepped closer, inspecting me carefully.

"You're eating enough, aren't you? From tomorrow, I'll buy better food. More nutrients… you need it to keep growing strong."

I can't believe this… he actually cares this much. I have to protect him no matter what.

I browsed through the shop carefully. A course caught my eye: Human Potential Analysis.

If I can understand people's strengths and weaknesses… I can find someone to act legally for me. Someone who can do the things I can't as a six-year-old.

Purchased. Done.

Next, I opened the market section. Three small investment knowledge fragments were available.

Small investments… I'll start carefully.

I spent 2,000,000 KRW (2500 dollars )on a small company:

Chorok Textile: expected growth three times

I logged into Father's account quietly, making sure he didn't notice. Each click, each calculation… my tiny fingers were careful but precise.

Father peeked over my shoulder.

"Raon… focused on that computer again?"

"Yes, Dad… just learning some new things," I said with a faint smile.

He nodded approvingly, placing a hand on my head.

"You're smart, Raon. Always curious, always learning… I'm proud of you."

Step one… small investment complete. But I need someone I can trust for bigger things.

"Raon, let's go visit Uncle Jinhyuk and Aunt Seoyeon today," my father said cheerfully while packing some food.

"Sure, Dad," I replied, keeping my excitement low. I had a plan… I needed to observe first.

We arrived at a small house. My father knocked, and the door opened.

"Raon! My little nephew!" Uncle Jinhyuk laughed, scooping me up.

"Aunt Seoyeon!" I said, bowing politely.

While we exchanged pleasantries, my eyes locked on a young man near the corner. He nodded politely at us and then left quietly.

Perfect… that's him.

Before he disappeared completely, I quickly memorized his contact info—email and other details—without anyone noticing.

This is how it begins. I just need him… someone capable… someone who won't fail.

Later, back home, I opened the old desktop computer. Father was still busy in the kitchen, humming as he cleaned.

Now… let's see if this works.

I typed quickly, sending an email to Minjae:

Subject: Opportunity

"Would you like to work for me and shine like no one ever did?"

Minjae's POV

I had just returned home after another failed job application. My confidence was low, and my inbox was mostly spam. Then… a new email appeared, subject: Opportunity.

Who even is this? Some kind of scam? I muttered, clicking it open.

"Would you like to work for me and shine like no one ever did?"

I froze. My first thought: prank. Or fraud. There's no way… this is real.

I typed back cautiously:

"What is this? Who are you? Some kind of scam?"

Seconds later, another reply appeared.

"No scam. I just need someone skilled, someone who can follow instructions. All you need to do is invest in the companies I tell you. I'll provide the money. You won't lose anything."

I leaned back in my chair, confused. Invest? They're offering money? Why me? Why not just do it themselves?

I typed again, my fingers shaking slightly:

"Why should I trust you? If you know investments, why not do it yourself?"

The reply came almost instantly:

"Because I want someone to work for me while enjoying their life. Someone who can act legally, who has the skills. That's you. You have what I need for the upcoming work."

I blinked. Skills? Me? I barely trust myself…

I hesitated. And the money… I don't even have funds to invest!

Another reply appeared:

"That's the point. You won't invest your money. I'll provide the capital. You just follow instructions. Will you do it, or let this opportunity slip away?"

I stared at the screen, mind racing. Is this real? Could this be… my chance? But why me?

A small part of me wanted to ignore it—another part, the part that had been overlooked my whole life, wanted to see. Maybe… just maybe… this is my one shot.

I exhaled slowly, fingers hovering over the keyboard.

Could I really trust this person? And what exactly would I be getting myself into?

Finally, I replied: "I'll do it. I'll follow your instructions."

I smirked. Perfect.

"Good," I typed back. "Next month, I'll send you the funds. Be ready. I'll also send the list of investments you'll manage. Prepare yourself for the first step."

A month passed. I checked my previous investments. The numbers made my heart race:

Invested 2,000,000 KRW (2500 dollars) in Company Chorok Textile

After one month, total returns: approximately 6,000,000 KRW ( 7,500 dollars)

Carefully, I sent all of it to Minjae along with the full investment list, making sure he understood every detail.

Step one complete. He now has the funds, instructions, and trust. Everything is ready for the next move.

Leaning back, I thought about the bigger picture. The first major event is approaching—the 1993 tech boom in South Korea. If I play this right, I can make significant profits and gain influence. But to do that, I need skilled people working for me… and Minjae will be my first. Everything is falling into place.

I looked at the screen again, determination burning in my eyes. Time to prepare… the hunt for the next major opportunity begins.
