Chapter 6: The Commission Infiltration
The cold night air bit at their faces, a sharp, stinging reminder of their reality. Five and Adam were on the outskirts of the city, a place of silent warehouses and humming power lines, the air crackling with a latent, temporal energy. The Commission safehouse was an unassuming building, a drab, gray monolith with no windows, a stark contrast to the sprawling grandeur of the mansion.
"It's about a mile out," Five said, his voice a low whisper in the night. "The perimeter is shielded by a temporal field. It's invisible, but it'll send a signal to the main hub if we try to cross it. A full-scale invasion. We can't go over it. We can't go through it."
"Then what's the plan?" Adam asked, his heart thumping against his ribs.
"We go around it," Five said, his gaze fixed on Adam. "I'll teleport us to the roof. You'll get us inside."
Adam nodded, his mind a whirlwind of focused energy. He pictured the Griffin, a creature of the air. But he needed it to be small. He needed it to be undetectable. He had to go against his last successful summoning of a majestic, powerful creature.
He closed his eyes, picturing a small, cloaked Griffin, a miniature version of the majestic beast in his mind's eye. It would be a ghost, a whisper, a silent messenger.
A small, cloaked creature, no bigger than a house cat, appeared on his shoulder. It was a miniature Griffin, its features shrouded in a shimmering, dark energy. It was a silent, graceful thing, and Adam felt a strange sense of pride.
"It's small," Five said, his voice a mixture of annoyance and surprise. "It's not a real Griffin."
"It's a stealth Griffin," Adam shrugged, a nervous grin on his face. "A work in progress. Quiet, too."
I am a sentient pop-culture reference standing in a room that looks like it was decorated by a haunted taxidermist.
Five, with a sharp, precise gesture, took Adam's arm. The world dissolved in a dizzying rush of wind and color, and then, with a jarring jolt, they were on the roof of the safehouse. The air was thick with the scent of burnt ozone, and the hum of the temporal shield was a low thrumming in the air.
They infiltrated the safehouse, a labyrinth of white, sterile hallways with blinking red lights and the constant, low hum of temporal technology. Five was a ghost in the machine, his knowledge of Commission protocols a map in the darkness. He led them through a maze of hallways, his voice a low whisper in the oppressive silence.
"Third door on the left," Five whispered, his eyes narrowed as he looked at a security panel. "Bypass the temporal coil. It'll short out their security for ten seconds."
Adam, with the stealth Griffin on his shoulder, concentrated. He directed the creature with a thought, a silent command in his mind. The Griffin, with a flash of its shimmering energy, phased through the temporal coil, and with a soft pop, the security lights went out.
"Go, go, go!" Adam whispered, his heart pounding in his chest.
The system message was a satisfying, confident little note in his mind. It was a far cry from the anxious, error-filled messages of his earlier summons. He was learning. He was getting better. He was becoming a key.
They reached the control room, a sterile, white space dominated by a large computer terminal. Five accessed the terminal, his fingers flying across the holographic keyboard. Adam, watching him, felt a sudden sense of confidence. He placed his hand on the terminal, and his system, in a flash of light, interfaced with the computer.
A file popped up on the screen, a series of complex diagrams and notes. The file was labeled "The Devourer." Adam's eyes widened. The diagram was a chillingly familiar map of the mansion, with the glowing artifact in the hidden chamber at its center.
"Reginald didn't want to fix the timeline," Adam whispered, his voice a shocked, low sound. "He wanted to control it."
Five, equally horrified, stared at the screen. "This isn't just a simple machine. It's a creature, a timeline-eating parasite. He was feeding it. That's why he was so obsessed with our powers. He was trying to create something that could stop it, or at least control it."
The new mission objective was a stark, chilling reality. They weren't fighting for survival anymore. They were fighting to save reality itself.
As they downloaded the file, a blaring alarm echoed through the building. The flashing red lights bathed the room in a bloody red glow. The humming of the temporal shields grew louder, a frantic, high-pitched whine.
"They're on to us," Five said, his eyes scanning the security monitors. "We've got to go. Now!"
As if on cue, a loud pop echoed from the hallway, and Hazel and Cha-Cha appeared, their masks a grotesque, menacing sight in the flashing red lights.
"They're getting away!" Cha-Cha screamed, her voice a frustrated roar.
Adam recalled the Griffin, and with a final, panicked glance at the screen, Five grabbed Adam's arm. The world dissolved in a dizzying rush of wind and color, and then, with a jarring jolt, they were on the other side of the building, a safe distance away. The blaring alarm, the flashing red lights, the frustrated roar of the agents—it was all a distant, muffled sound. They had escaped, but the knowledge they had gained was a heavy, terrifying weight.
