The peace in the mansion was a fragile thing, and it shattered a moment later. The front doors burst open, and Hazel and Cha-Cha stormed in, their masks now dented and scraped, their faces a furious mask of rage. They weren't a threat anymore. They were an infestation.
"You guys just don't learn, do you?" Diego snarled, a knife in each hand, his body a coiled spring of readiness.
Hazel, his expression a mask of cold fury, simply smiled. "We have a job to do. Hand over the kid."
Luther charged, a roar of primal rage on his lips. But Hazel and Cha-Cha were ready. They dodged him with a synchronized grace, their movements a brutal ballet of violence. Diego lunged, his knives a blur of motion, but Cha-Cha met him with a precise, cold counterattack, her fists a blur. Vanya stood back, her hands trembling, her face a mask of silent terror.
Adam, hiding behind a column, concentrated. He needed something big. Something strong. Something that could buy them some time.
With a groan of shifting earth and stone, a Stone Golem, a massive, lumbering figure of rock and moss, rose from the ground and positioned itself in front of the front door, a silent, unmoving guardian. It was a beautiful, terrifying thing, and it bought them precious seconds.
"I heard a rumor... that you're unarmed!" Allison's voice, a soft, seductive whisper, echoed through the room.
Cha-Cha, in the middle of a brutal exchange with Diego, stopped. Her gun, in a flash of light, simply... disappeared from her hand. She stared at her empty palm, a look of stunned disbelief on her face.
Luther, grappling with a surprisingly strong Hazel, yelled, "Adam, you got any bigger ones?!"
Vanya, seeing the chaos, felt a sudden, familiar surge of power. It was a ghost of a feeling, a memory of a time she had wished she could forget. She had spent a lifetime trying to bury it, trying to pretend it wasn't there. But now, it was back. The chaos, the fear, the violence. It was all a symphony of sound, and she was the conductor. She closed her eyes, and a silent, invisible shockwave emanated from her, a ripple in the fabric of reality.
The Commission agents' weapons, their temporal devices, their radios—they all went silent. The devices blinked out, their lights dying. The temporal leash on their car outside simply... disappeared. Hazel and Cha-Cha looked at each other, their masks now a blank slate of confusion.
"What was that?" Vanya whispered, her eyes wide with fear and wonder. She felt the power surge through her, a warm, terrifying sensation. It was a part of her she had always tried to suppress. But now, it was free.
Hazel and Cha-Cha, their weapons useless, their mission now a chaotic mess, looked at each other. They had a job to do, but they were not going to do it without their toys. They retreated, a silent, frustrated defeat. But as they ran, Hazel left behind a small temporal screen on the ground.
The screen flickered to life, and The Handler's face, a smug, condescending smile on her lips, appeared. Her voice, a smooth, mocking whisper, echoed through the room, a chilling counterpoint to the family's victory.
"You've won the battle, Hargreeves," she said, her smile never faltering. "But the war has just begun."
The screen then flickered, and a diagram of a creature appeared, its form a nightmarish fusion of a human and a parasite. It was labeled, in a cold, precise font, "The Devourer."
