Chapter 3: The Baker's Life
Emma Sinclair wiped the sweat from her forehead as she slid a tray of freshly baked croissants into the oven. The bakery was her sanctuary, a place where she could lose herself in the simple, comforting rhythms of baking. She loved the feel of dough beneath her fingers, the smell of yeast and sugar, and the joy of watching her creations bring smiles to people's faces.
As she worked, her mind wandered to the strange feeling she'd had the night before. It was as if she'd felt a presence, a whisper of something unknown. She shook her head, chuckling. She was just being fanciful. The bakery was her domain, and she knew every nook and cranny, every ingredient and every recipe.
The doorbell above the entrance jingled, signaling the arrival of a customer. Emma's assistant, Rachel, greeted the person with a warm smile. Emma smiled too, wiping her hands on her apron as she emerged from the kitchen.
A young woman, elegantly dressed and poised, stood at the counter, eyeing the display case with interest. Emma approached her, ready to offer samples and recommendations.
As the woman left with a box of pastries, Emma felt a sense of satisfaction. This was her life: predictable, comforting, and full of sweetness. She had no idea that her life was about to take a dramatic turn, one that would lead her straight into the heart of darkness.
Meanwhile, outside, Seth watched the bakery from across the street. He'd been tracking Emma's movements, studying her routine. There was something about her that drew him in, a sense of innocence and light in a world that had long since lost its way.
He lit a cigarette, feeling the familiar burn in his lungs. He knew he shouldn't get close to her, that his presence would only bring danger. But he couldn't help himself. He was drawn to her like a moth to flame.
As he turned to leave, he caught a glimpse of Emma through the bakery window. She was laughing, her eyes sparkling with joy. Seth's heart twisted, a pang of longing he couldn't ignore.
