Chapter 4 - Coincidence?

The answer had been some form of no. He didn't know how to get to Diagon Alley, but he knew it had something to do with the Leaky Cauldron pub on Charing Cross Road. He only knew because her mom had vaguely told him about it when she had first explained magic. My dad also told me not to worry about it until closer to the end of the summer.

So several weeks passed, the days a chore to get through. My mom either ignored me with each passing day, locked herself in her bedroom so she didn't have to see me, or, on special occasions, let snarky remarks about me slip.

It was now near the end of August and I was sitting at the kitchen counter with my dad, my mom nowhere to be seen.

"So Aelynn," my dad started, looking up from his work. "I was wondering if you wanted to try to get to Diagon Alley today."

The words sounded slightly strange, adding on to the fact that he was speaking in an extremely quiet tone as to not alert her mom.

I wish we could stop doing this.

"Yeah! That'd be great!" I enthusiastically replied.

He smiled at me, then grabbed his wallet from the nearby table. "I know everything there is going to be priced with wizard money, but I think there's a way to convert it." he said this like he was slightly unsure of himself, and I couldn't blame him. There was no real way for him to be certain without her mom's help.

I just hope everything will be normal soon...

With that I led the way down the sidewalk, feeling extremely lucky Charing Cross Road was only two streets over. But that didn't really make a whole lot of sense either.

"Hey Dad?" I asked as you walked down the street.

He looked at me with a light smile. "Yeah?"

"Is there a reason we live so close to this... Leaky Cauldron place? I mean, didn't Mom want to throw every connection to the Wizarding World away?" I wondered, placing a finger on my lips. "Or is it just a coincidence?"

My dad tilted his head to the side slightly, a gesture that meant he was thinking pretty hard.

"Well, I don't recall her telling me there was a reason, but you're right, it's pretty odd to be a coincidence..." he replied in a thoughtful tone.

I nodded and we walked in comfortable silence for a bit. I watched my feet, doing something odd I always did and matched the pace of my footsteps with my dad's.

"Hey, A?" my dad suddenly asked, his voice soft and a little concerned. "Have you been okay? I mean, your mom isn't being... overly supportive."

Looking at him and smiling, I nodded. "Yeah... yeah I'm fine. It really doesn't bother me"

He nodded in reply, and I looked down at my feet again. However, this time I wasn't matching footsteps, this time I was embarrassed.

I do care about what she does. I want everything to be normal again...

But I couldn't voice anything out loud. I didn't want my dad to know. He still cared about my mom too and right now he was in the middle of something my mom started and I was now a part of.

My dad suddenly stopped, and I looked up to see why. In front of us was a building, quite small and a bit hidden, but there with the sign: The Leaky Cauldron. We had arrived.
