Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: A Dead End

Despair had settled upon the hearts of Abid and his two companions. The city still groaned under the weight of the unknown plague, which had left its streets empty and its inhabitants emaciated. Abid stood on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city, his grey eyes gazing at the scene with sorrow. The past days, spent in the arduous search for the hideout of the evil "Black Salvation" organization, had weighed heavily on his soul, leaving him feeling defeated and disheartened.

"Month and days have passed, and we are still going in circles," whispered Banarf, who stood beside him. Her grip on the scepter of the Shulamite ancestors was firm, but her voice carried a note of suppressed anger and despair. "We have searched every corner of this city, the sewers, the abandoned houses. We have uncovered their plague devices, but they vanish like ghosts. As if they are mocking us, Abid!" Banarf felt utterly helpless against this unseen enemy.

Iormed sat on a nearby rock, her shoulders slumped. Her ancient curse continued to drain her strength, causing her chronic pain and general weakness. She stared into the distance with a mournful expression, the glimmer of hope that had flickered in her eyes now extinguished. "I have searched for a cure for years," she said in a barely audible whisper, "and these villains spread death and then disappear. How can we defeat a shadow?" Her face bore a profound sadness, as if she carried the weight of the world on her shoulders.

A painful pang gripped Abid's heart. His sympathy for Iormed and the grieving residents of Old Hall gnawed at him. They had tried their best. He used his "Mind Stimulation" ability to collect any information, but the organization left few traces, but he pushed himself to continue. He used "Paranormal Object Assessment" on every artifact or suspicious device they found in the sewers, but they found no clues leading to their main hideout.

"They've moved their location," Abid said in his calm, dignified voice, "or perhaps they've become more cautious after we exposed them in the sewers. They're using abilities like 'Disguise' and 'Phantom Body,' making them very difficult to track." He remembered how the leader had so skillfully escaped them during the last chase. He felt frustrated, but the gilded wooden medallion, the "Shield of the Humble Scribe," he wore gave him inner peace and clarity of mind, helping him to remain composed in the face of such challenges.

"So, what do we do now, Knight?" Banarf asked, her eyes fixed on Abid expectantly. "Just let these innocents suffer?"

Abid sighed deeply. He knew the decision he was about to make would be difficult. "No, Banarf, we won't leave them. But we can't keep chasing ghosts. I've realized that the 'Black Salvation' organization is more complex than we thought. They're not just thieves, but a group with their own distorted understanding of 'The Scribe' and 'The Star of Beginnings.' To confront them, we need a deeper understanding. We need stronger abilities." Postponing the Search and Enhancing Abilities:

At that moment, Abid made his decision. "We will temporarily postpone our search for the organization's hideout here in Old Hall," Abid stated, his words firm. "Our next objective will be the ruined shrine. Ainar said the shrine might contain a 'healing chamber,' where even the most complex curses could be cleansed. And if the shrine can indeed amplify stellar energy, perhaps we will find there the key to breaking the curses, to stopping this plague, and to lifting Iormed's curse." Iormed's eyes shone with a light Abid had never seen before. Hope flickered within her tormented soul. "The ruined shrine?" she whispered. "Perhaps... perhaps there is hope for me and for the people of this city." Abid's words gave her a newfound strength, propelling her to overcome her pain. "But we must prepare thoroughly for the shrine," Abid continued. "The journey to the shrine will not be less dangerous. We must be stronger, faster, and more adaptable. My agility is not particularly high, and it has been a hindrance when facing the organization's hidden members. Therefore, I will focus on mastering a new ability that will compensate for my modest agility." Abid began intense training, not only to increase his strength but also to gain a deeper understanding of the supernatural powers he had yet to master. He spent long hours meditating, using his wisdom to connect the dots between his understanding of the "Star of Beginning" as a "focal point of supernatural energy" and his own nature as a dragon. He knew that the power of dragons was not merely physical strength but a profound connection to the universe and its fundamental energy.

"I saw how quickly the leader moved," Abid thought to himself as he dodged feigned blows with his large axe. "And how he vanished in the blink of an eye. I must become faster, but not just through physical training. I must become faster on an energetic level, at the very core of our reality."

Abid's New Ability: "Dragon's Agility"

On a cold night, as the "Star of Beginnings" shone exceptionally bright in the sky, Abid sat in contemplation. He focused on the feeling of weight in his body and how to reduce it. He remembered the scribe whispers that their world was merely a story, and that the Star of Beginnings was the beating heart of that narrative. What if agility wasn't just physical movement but a subtle adjustment to the code that governed his body's gravity?

Abid uttered the mystical German phrase he used to activate his abilities. He felt a cold surge of energy flow through every cell of his body, not the energy of strength, but the energy of agility. He began to feel as if his body had become less dense, as if air flowed through him more easily. This was the beginning of his understanding of a new ability: "Dragon's Agility." This ability didn't dramatically increase his speed, but it made his movements smoother and his body less susceptible to impact, increasing his chances of dodging attacks. This ability compensated for his "modest" agility, making him more agile in combat without altering his original agility score.

Abid practiced "Dragon's Agility" with fervor. He ran, jumped, and dodged, feeling the distinct difference. He could maneuver in tight spaces and leap over obstacles with greater ease. It was a feeling of liberation, as if a part of his dragon identity was manifesting itself in this newfound spiritual lightness.

The Unique Ability Emerges: "Wings of Light"

As Abid continued his training in "Dragon's Agility," he began to feel a deeper connection to the "Star of Beginnings." He saw the star in his dreams and meditations as a pulsating point of energy. He pondered his own nature as a dragon and how dragons are often associated with flight, with freedom in the skies. But he desired not destructive combat abilities but something that reflected his core character: protecting the innocent, seeking truth, and refinement.

During one of his training sessions, while Abid focused all his energy on "Dragon's agility," he felt a surge of energy from the "Star of Beginnings" flow into him. He remembered Nardan's words that the star was "the eye of the Weaver," and that the Weaver had woven this world from a core of energy. In that moment, it was more than just lightness. He felt a powerful surge of energy emanating from his back, as if something was growing.

A brilliant blue light burst from Abid's back, and from it, translucent, shimmering wings began to form, made entirely of pure light energy. These wings were not physical but ethereal, fluttering silently. This was his unique ability: "Wings of Light."

Abid was astonished and thrilled. These wings were not for combat. They didn't fire fireballs or lightning bolts. They granted him immense mobility and agility. They allowed him to soar through the air with effortless grace, not by muscle power, but by the power of light. The "Wings of Light" were the perfect complement to his modest stature, a means of incredibly swift travel, a way to evade danger, and to conduct rapid reconnaissance. They reflected the essence of his character: the free pursuit of truth and the nonviolent protection of the innocent. Now he could soar over obstacles and reach places he had never dreamed of. When Banarf and Iormed saw the Wings of Light glowing on Abid's back, their eyes widened with astonishment and admiration. "Amazing, Abid!" exclaimed Banarf, all traces of despair gone from her face. "The Wings of Light! You truly are the Dragon Knight we've been waiting for!" Iormed, for the first time in a long while, smiled a genuine smile. "With these wings," she said, "we can reach anywhere. The ruined shrine... nothing can stop us now!" Hope surged in their hearts, not only for the shrine but also for a better future. The Ruined Shrine: The Unexpected Discovery After days of training and honing their skills, Abid and his companions set off for the ruined shrine. Their journey was fraught with danger, as they had to traverse the treacherous and monster-infested "Kingdom Western Lands." But this time, their journey was easier thanks to Abid's newfound abilities. He used his "Dragon's Agility" and "Wings of Light" to maneuver over ravines and avoid dangerous areas. He would sometimes fly, carrying Iormed for short distances, or conduct rapid aerial reconnaissance, allowing them to overcome challenges that would have seemed impossible before.

They were inspired by the riddle given to them by Ainar: "Where the spirit touches stone, and where eternal light dances between the blind mountains, there lies the shrine, beyond the frozen tears of the single star." After days of arduous searching, they finally found what appeared to be "the frozen tears of the single star": a massive, eternally frozen waterfall cascading from a mountain peak. The shimmering light from the "Star of Beginnings" reflected off the ice, painting a mosaic of blue and white.

At the base of the frozen waterfall, amidst the blind mountains shrouded in thick clouds, they found the ruined shrine. It was a majestic ruin, half-buried in snow and ice, its walls weathered and bearing faded carvings of a forgotten civilization. The sight was both awe-inspiring and melancholic, a testament to a great power that had been destroyed and forgotten.

"This is it," whispered Banarf, her eyes wide with wonder. "The ruined shrine."

"I hope we find what we seek within it," said Iormed, her voice trembling.

The three heroes began to explore the shrine. It was filled with secrets—dark passages and crumbling chambers. Abid used his "Mind-Stimulating Power" to decipher any ancient inscriptions, while Banarf used her "Stone Shaping" ability to clear blocked passages. Iormed, despite her pain, pushed herself to help, searching for any glimmer of hope.

As they traversed a narrow passage leading to a circular chamber at the heart of the shrine, Abid spotted something strange. There was a small crack in one of the walls, covered with a thin layer of ice that seemed unnatural. The crack wasn't ordinary; it seemed to emanate an unseen energy. "What is this?" Abid asked, approaching the crack. He placed his hand on the wall, closed his eyes, and used his "Power of Perception" to analyze the anomaly. The power revealed that the crack was not natural. Behind the ice was a hidden magical barrier, concealing a passage. More importantly, there was a faint resonance of the "Star of Beginning" energy, but corrupted and twisted, just like the one they had found in the sewers of Oldhall. "It's the Organization!" Abid exclaimed, his gray eyes flashing with fury. "Their hideout is here! Inside the ruined shrine!" It was a shocking and completely unexpected discovery. They had been searching in Oldhall, while the enemy was hiding in the most desolate and secretive place. "I never would have expected that!" said Banarf, her warrior spirit ignited. Eliminating the Black Salvation Organization: There was no time to hesitate. Banarf used "Stone Shaping" to shatter the ice and the magical barrier, revealing a secret passage leading deeper into the shrine. The passage was dimly lit by dark crystals, and a foul odor filled the air. This time, there would be no escape. The three heroes rushed into the hideout. The organization was using a main hall within the shrine as its operational center. They found numerous members wearing black masks, some chanting spells, others working on strange devices similar to those they had seen in the sewers. The devices were connected to ancient artifacts from the shrine itself, converting the energy of the "Star" into a plague that was then dispersed into populated areas. "This is the end, you evil ones!" roared Abid in his deep voice, raising his massive axe, its bronze blade gleaming in the darkness. His anger was cold and just. The battle erupted. The organization's members used supernatural abilities such as "Invisibility," "Phantom Body," "Illusion of Illness," and "Fireball." But our heroes were prepared this time. Abid used "Dragon's Agility" and "Wings of Light" with remarkable skill. He moved like a shadow, dodging attacks with incredible speed and using his wings to navigate the hall, giving him a tactical advantage. His mighty axe strikes were both powerful and precise, aimed at disabling the devices and destroying weapons without unnecessary bloodshed. He focused on the organization's leader, who was once again attempting to escape.

Banarf: She fought bravely, driven by a deep anger against injustice. She used "Protective Shield" to defend herself and her companions from attacks, and "Iron Will" to ward off hallucinations. Her ability to "Shape Stone" was invaluable, as she could raise rock barriers to trap enemies or block escape routes. Her gray eyes shone with unwavering determination.

Iormed: Despite her curse and chronic pain, Iormed fought with incredible courage. She wielded her war-axe, delivering powerful blows, even though every movement caused her excruciating pain. Her resolve to heal and protect the innocent gave her strength beyond her physical limitations. The shield Abid had purchased offered her some protection, but her will was her true shield.

The battle was fierce. The organization's leader, who was more cunning, tried to escape. But Abid, thanks to "Dragon's Agility" and "Wings of Light," which granted him enhanced vision and predictive abilities, managed to intercept him at the last moment. Abid rushed towards him and grabbed him tightly before he could disappear. "You won't escape this time, leader!" Abid shouted.

After a long and grueling battle, the heroes succeeded in dismantling the "Black Salvation" organization. They destroyed their equipment, neutralized their leaders, and recovered the artifacts they had been using. The artifacts, located in the shrine, which were originally used to channel the power of the "Star" for noble purposes, had been corrupted and transformed into instruments of destruction. Thanks to the "Appraisal of Supernatural Items," Abid had come to understand its dual nature: its capacity for both good and evil, depending on the user's intentions. After securing the location, a profound silence settled over the area. The three heroes were exhausted, but they felt immense triumph. They had thwarted a major threat and protected the innocent residents of Old Hall from further suffering. "We did it!" exclaimed Banarf, a faint smile playing on her lips. Iormed knelt down, her amber eyes brimming with tears—this time, tears of pure joy. She had witnessed firsthand the correction of a flaw in the fabric of reality. "The plague is over," she whispered. "It's over...and now, perhaps...perhaps my curse will end too." Hope surged within her, stronger than ever before. Abid looked at his companions, his heart filled with profound joy. They had proven that good truly has value and that willpower and determination are stronger than any evil. This phase had ended, but the ruined shrine still held its secrets, awaiting their discovery.
