The company stood in silence as the White Cloaks surrounded them, their presence both awe-inspiring and unsettling. Mamir tightened his grip on his sword, unwilling to lower his guard, but Visrok's eyes shone with curiosity.
The leader dismounted slowly. Removing his hood, he revealed a scarred face and silver hair that gleamed like moonlight. His voice was firm yet calm:
"I am Serath, commander of the White Cloaks. For centuries, we have waited in secret, guarding the southern paths against what sleeps beneath. And now… the darkness stirs once more."
Mamir's tone was wary.
"Then if you are protectors, why show yourselves only now? Why let villages burn and innocents vanish?"
A shadow passed across Serath's face.
"Because, Prince Mamir, the enemy we face is not of flesh and blood. Steel alone cannot vanquish it. We needed proof that Harland still has heirs brave enough to confront what lies ahead. Tonight, we have that proof."
The White Cloaks knelt in unison, their cloaks sweeping the earth. The sight struck both princes with astonishment.
Visrok whispered, almost disbelieving:
"They… they kneel to us."
Serath raised his head, his eyes burning with conviction.
"O princes of Harland, hear our oath. We pledge ourselves to your cause. The shadows cannot be faced alone. From this moment forth, the White Cloaks ride with you."
Mamir glanced at Visrok, conflict flickering in his eyes. Trust was not easily given—but the sincerity of the White Cloaks was undeniable.
At last, Mamir lowered his sword.
"Then rise, Serath of the White Cloaks. If you truly stand against the darkness, we shall ride together."
The cloaked warriors rose, and in that moment, the company felt their strength multiplied. Yet even as the alliance was forged, the mist behind them twisted unnaturally, and a voice whispered from the void:
"Unite as you wish… the darkness will consume you all."
The earth trembled. The journey south had only just begun.
