Chapter 20 - The clockmaker's secret

*Chapter 20: The Name Returns*

The town of Elmridge was changing.

After Theo and Lyra escaped the Echo Corridor, nothing felt normal anymore. Children forgot what day it was. Old clocks ran backward, then forward, then froze. Even the sky sometimes flickered between morning and dusk in the same minute.

Time was *fracturing.*

And only Theo felt the fracture inside himself.

Ever since seeing the Forgotten Guardian through the glass… something had been *unlocked.*

Not a memory.

A feeling.

Like a name he should've known… one that sat just behind his heart, waiting.

***

Lyra paced the attic.

She was furious. "They're breaking free. That corridor was a warning—the last barrier between the real world and them. And now… you're connected."

Theo sat on the windowsill, staring at the Compass. "I heard my own voice down there. I think… I think they're inside me somehow."

Lyra's eyes darkened. "Then we don't have much time."

He looked up. "What do we do?"

She swallowed. "We find the Time Archive."

Theo blinked. "What's that?"

Lyra walked to a dusty drawer and pulled out a scroll, faded and ancient. "The Time Archive is a vault hidden beyond all timelines. Only Guardians can access it. Inside it is every name, every identity… even the ones erased."

Theo's breath caught. "You think we can find their *true name*?"

"If we do," Lyra said, "we can seal them again. But if we fail…"

Theo finished the sentence.

"They'll rewrite time."

***

The path to the Time Archive wasn't on a map.

It existed in a space between seconds, in a crack between heartbeats.

The Heart Compass led them there—through a storm of memory, across bridges made of broken hours, and into a temple floating above nothing.

There was no sky.

No ground.

Just *time*.

Everywhere.

Spinning like galaxies.

***

Inside the Archive, Theo stood before a wall of stone. Carved across it were names—thousands of them. Some glowing, some fading.

But one section… was blank.

Completely erased.

Lyra stepped forward. "This is it. This is where their name used to be."

Theo touched the stone.

It felt warm.

Then a voice filled the space—not angry. Not broken.

Just tired.

*"You remember me… don't you?"*

Theo's chest ached.

He closed his eyes.

And suddenly—he saw it.

A moment.

A flash.

*A younger version of the Forgotten Guardian.*

Standing beside Mara.

Laughing.

Building the Heart Compass *together.*

They were once friends.

Partners.

Equals.

But something changed.

Something broke.

Theo opened his eyes, whispering:

*"Your name… was Cael."*

The stone lit up.

The blank space filled in.

Lyra gasped. "You remembered…"

But it wasn't over.

Behind them, a vortex opened.

And from it, *Cael* stepped out.

Not masked.

Not broken.

But fully *awake.*

And smiling.

"Thank you," he said softly.

Then his eyes turned dark.

"Now I can begin again."
