LINDSEY'S POV
During lunch with dad, my mind was racing and I wanted to ask him what that document was
about but I didn't and I feel like I made the wrong decision by not confronting him about it,
once again my insecurities took over. Now I am looking for a way to escape this pack, so I
rush home, run upstairs, and start shoving clothes into my bag, my mind racing, my heart
pounding in my chest, aware of the fact that dad will be home soon. So I calmed myself
down and paused to revise my plan,
"Dad calls the warriors who guard the borders to his office to brief them about their shifts and
duties before he leaves the office and that means that they are with him presently so I lost
my chances to escape today as they would return to the borders in five minutes and I can't
make it to the borders ahead of that time frame. So the best time to escape is tomorrow, I'll
pretend to be sick to avoid school tomorrow and get to the borders as soon as the warriors
leave the borders.
"
After formulating the plan in my head, I heard the front door creak so I hurriedly changed into
my usual sweatshirt and joggers and went downstairs. I greeted my dad and hugged him like
nothing happened with guilt eating at me. We ate and he suggested we watch Disney
cartoons as usual but I faked a coughing fit and told him I was coming down with the flu. He
believed me and was concerned because I always had a weak body. The pack doctors had
to work for eighteen hours to save my life when I was a baby. I felt guilty for lying to my dad
but I steeled my resolve to carry out my plan to perfection because I refuse to be sold like
livestock.
"Dad?" I called out "Can I skip school tomorrow?" I asked tentatively as I continued with my
acting, he looked at me with those concerned eyes I have grown to love and said"Yes kiddo, take the day off I will stay at home with you"
I became shocked and panicked " no ... no dad you don't need to stay at home " my
words stumbling over each other " remember that the Alpha king is coming to visit our
pack?"
"Oh that's true,
" he said " but can you stay home alone?, I don't feel safe leaving you alone"
"I'm almost 16 Dad, I think I can manage myself " I reassured him. I really need to get him
out of the house so my plan can work better.
The next morning I stayed in bed coughing to exaggerate my illness so when I heard my dad
Enter my room I performed a coughing fit
"Hey kiddo, how are you feeling this morning" he asked
I made my voice more hoarse to make my story more believable "I'm fine Daddy cough
cough"
"Sorry kiddo, I have to go to the office now, I'll check on you later I love you,
" he said
" I love you too Daddy cough"
As soon as I heard the front door close, I swung into action and took the bag which I had
already put my clothes in, and went through the window because it was closer to the borders
and it would be risky to go through the front door. When I got to the pack borders, I waited
and double checked if the pack warriors were patrolling so I had to wait for Dad to call them.
Not long after I heard a conversation,
" The alpha called us,
" said one " then let's go,
wolves and left the borders hurriedly.
" said the other. They shifted into their
I knew that my chance had come, so I crept quietly through the woods and when I got to the
borders, I ran because I couldn't shift into my wolf. When I crossed the borders, my dad felt
it, because of the barrier against rogues at the borders so he sent warriors after me. I kept
running till I couldn't feel or see the warriors behind me, I heaved a sigh of relief and decided
to rest. I saw a big tree and I climbed it to rest on one of its wide branches. I started crying
soon after and was regretting my actions cause I missed my dad and I wondered how he felt
about me leaving him but I shook off those thoughts, after exhaustion took over and I fell
asleep.
Halfway through the night, I heard shallow footsteps in the dark, my breath hitched against
my throat and I opened my eyes slowly, my heart palpitating already. A howl split the silence,
I froze not daring to even breathe. I wasn't alone out here, a shudder ripped through me.
My mind raced on the possibility that the pack warriors found me and now I was going to be
dragged back to become the chosen mate of the Westlake Alpha, I thought I had escaped
until I saw a shadow moving among the trees below.
