Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Concern

Brandy Quinn and Skye Morgan accompanied Serena Sutton to the hospital.

It was the middle of the night, so they could only go to the emergency room.

Since there were many patients and few doctors in the emergency room, the on-duty doctor asked about Serena Sutton's medical history and condition, then directly called the doctor from the gastroenterology department to come down and pick her up.

It was suspected to be acute gastroenteritis caused by eating too many spicy sticks and drinking cold water.

Caleb Lockwood had just finished surgery and was ready to head out from the operation room.

It was late at night, and the main entrance on the outpatient side was already closed, so he chose to exit from the emergency room side.

As he reached the emergency room, he could see Serena Sutton sitting on a chair from afar.

The young girl's face was pale, her brows were furrowed, and she was leaning softly against Brandy Quinn's shoulder, looking obviously ill.

A male doctor was standing in front of her, presumably asking about her medical history. Caleb recognized the doctor as being from the gastroenterology department.

After asking about her condition, the doctor led Serena Sutton to the inpatient department.

Caleb Lockwood stood still, his attractive eyebrows knitted together.

How did she suddenly fall ill? Just two or three hours ago, she was still chatting with him.

Is she really just a kid?

Caleb took out his phone from his pocket and dialed Silas Shaw's number.

Silas Shaw was woken up by Caleb Lockwood's call, his voice slightly hoarse and his tone somewhat irritable: "Dude, what's going on so late? Don't tell me there's a surgery you can't handle."

Caleb Lockwood's voice was clear: "Who's the on-duty first-line doctor in the gastroenterology department today? What's the number?"

Silas Shaw: "..." He almost wanted to swear. Calling him at this hour just to ask that?

"How would I know who it is? I'm not in the gastroenterology department." The Great Dr. Shaw felt like roaring, what kind of situation was this? Disturbing his sleep was a grave offense.

Caleb Lockwood's expression didn't change, he said calmly, "I can consider helping with that major surgery of yours next Monday. Five minutes, give me an answer."

Silas Shaw was well-known in the hospital for his social skills, and he had good relationships with all the nurses, especially the pretty ones.

"Alright, my ancestor. You'd better keep your word, if you..."

Before Silas Shaw could finish, Caleb Lockwood had already hung up, leaving only the "buzz buzz buzz" of the busy tone on the other end.

He scratched his head, resigned to helping Caleb Lockwood find out.

Silas Shaw was very efficient and found out in less than five minutes.

He texted Caleb Lockwood: "The on-duty doctor today is Doctor Irvine, his short number is ***"

Caleb Lockwood walked out of the emergency room, heading toward his car, as a cool breeze hit him. Without hesitation, he dialed Doctor Irvine's number.

-

Serena Sutton lay on the hospital bed, connected to an IV. Earlier, a nurse had come to draw blood, saying that tests needed to be done.

She felt this was really embarrassing.

To end up in the hospital because of eating spicy sticks, she felt like a fool.

Brandy Quinn comforted her, "Don't feel so down. Doctors and nurses have seen all sorts of things. No one's laughing at you."

Serena Sutton sighed weakly, "Thank goodness I didn't run into Caleb Lockwood today."

If Caleb Lockwood found out, her image would be ruined by a pack of spicy sticks.

The next morning, the doctor came to make rounds.

"Feeling better today? All your tests from last night came back fine; nothing major. Do you still feel uncomfortable anywhere?" Doctor Irvine asked in an official tone.

Serena Sutton shook her head.

Doctor Irvine nodded, "We'll continue the IV today, and you can be discharged tomorrow."

He paused, then asked, "Oh, by the way, young lady, what's your relationship with Dr. Lockwood from neurosurgery?"

Neurosurgery? Dr. Lockwood?

"Caleb Lockwood?" Serena Sutton tentatively replied.

Doctor Irvine quickly nodded, his eyes curious. "Yes, yes."

Serena Sutton bit her dry lip and slowly said, "I'd say we're just ordinary friends at best. Maybe not even friends."

"You're trying to fool me, young lady." Doctor Irvine chuckled, "Would an ordinary friend care so much about you?"

"Last night, Dr. Lockwood even called specifically to ask about your condition."

Serena Sutton blinked incredulously upon hearing this, then suddenly frowned and asked excitedly, "What did you tell him?"

"I just told the truth." Doctor Irvine replied lightly, walking back to Serena Sutton's side.

In a lowered voice, "Dr. Lockwood is the most sought-after here. He has unlimited potential. I've never seen him care about anyone like this. Grab the chance, young lady."

Serena Sutton was completely baffled.

Wait, how did Caleb Lockwood know she went to the hospital?

Most importantly, does he already know she got acute gastroenteritis from eating spicy sticks?

Ahhhh!

She felt like she didn't want to live.

Serena Sutton, looking like she had lost the will to live, quickly took out her phone, pondering whether to send Caleb Lockwood a message.

But then she thought, what did Doctor Irvine mean by what he said earlier?

Caleb Lockwood cares about her? And he even specifically called to ask?

Thinking of this, Serena Sutton smiled again.

She typed slowly with one hand, sending Caleb Lockwood a message.

Renowned-Millionaire Serena: "Dr. Lockwood, how did you know I was in the hospital?"

After a long time, she received Caleb Lockwood's reply: "Saw you at the emergency room."

Straightforward, with no extra words of concern.

So that was it; he saw her at the emergency room.

From his tone, it didn't seem like he was particularly concerned. It sounded more like a casual question, and Doctor Irvine was just exaggerating.

Lunch time. Doctor's on-call room.

Caleb Lockwood took the reheated lunch out of the microwave.

Silas Shaw walked in at some point, placing one arm on Caleb's shoulder.

"Buddy, I heard from Doctor Irvine in gastroenterology that you called him for the condition of a young lady with acute gastroenteritis."

"You asked him to take extra care, clearly showing you care about her."

Saying this, Silas Shaw sat down on the sofa, crossing his legs.

"Tell me, is that girl the one who brought you drinks last time?" Silas Shaw stared intently at Caleb Lockwood, trying to discern something from his face.

Caleb Lockwood took out a pair of disposable chopsticks, not even lifting an eyelid.

"You're very free?" His tone was cold, with a hint of threat.

Silas Shaw chuckled, resting his face on one hand like a young girl staring at Caleb Lockwood, "Are you shy? You've already done it, why try to hide?"

"A man should take responsibility."

Just then, Victor Rhodes walked in as Silas Shaw said this.

He adjusted his glasses, smiling so that his eyes became slits.

"Teacher Shaw, what wild words were those? What... did you do?"

Silas Shaw stood up, giving Caleb Lockwood a meaningful look, "Hey! Ask your teacher Lockwood about that."

Caleb Lockwood gave him a cold glance, his thin lips barely moving, "Silas Shaw, does Zanna know... that you were the one who spread the rumor?"

Silas Shaw's smile froze, his lips trembling as he looked at Caleb Lockwood in shock. After a moment, he spoke, "Brother, I was wrong."

Victor Rhodes was the most bewildered, wondering what kind of riddle the two teachers were speaking. He couldn't understand a word.
