Their footsteps echoed against the corridor floor, thick with vine pulp and blood. Bits of scorched fur and withered plant matter clung to the walls, glowing faintly in the half-dead lights overhead. The air reeked of smoke and damp moss.
Pamela glanced sideways at Barbara, a small smile softening her features. "Barbara… you looked so beautiful fighting those wolves."
Barbara's head looked toward's Pamela, a faint blush rising beneath the dim glow of her face. She scoffed and waved a hand. "You're just flirting with me, aren't you?"
Pamela shook her head quickly. "No, no. I've legitimately never seen a woman fight like you. Where did you learn that martial arts?"
Barbara's shoulders lifted in a modest shrug, though pride edged into her tone. "My dad had me trained to the peak of physical fitness so I could defend myself from kidnappers… but somehow they always manage to get ahold of me."
She clenched her hand, sparks leaping between her fingers, the crackle of lighting on her knuckles. "I'd like to see Two-Face try now. I would give him a face full of fifty thousand volts."
Pamela's eyes gleamed in approval. "That sounds like an excellent plan."
Barbara tilted her head with playful sharpness. "You're not opposed to me shocking people with a dose of reality in the form of fifty thousand volts to the face?"
Pamela waved her hand dismissively. "Of course not. He's a bad guy. There's nothing wrong with beating the shit out of him. Although…" She slowed slightly, her voice thoughtful. "Maybe hold off on killing any of Batman's enemies for now. You don't want to attract his attention. What if he throws you in Arkham or something?"
Barbara's steps faltered, the seriousness of that point settling in. "Hmm."
Pamela's tone stayed calm. "It's better to look harmless for now. Use your powers sparingly. Accumulate strength. Build a reputation for being good."
Barbara's eyebrow arched, her lips quirking faintly. "Whoa… you're already thinking like a villain, aren't you?"
Pamela's face was deadpan. "What? There's nothing wrong with that. We just massacred a hallway full of plant monsters. We're kind of mass murderers already."
Barbara's mouth tugged faintly at the corner. "Yeah, but those things weren't even human. Still… I get what you mean. Playing a villain in secret does sound kind of fun."
Pamela slid her arm around Barbara's shoulders, pulling her close as they walked. Her voice dipped low, a whisper threading through the hum of overhead lights. "Exactly. Just imagine it—secret villains, orchestrating Gotham's biggest crimes behind Batman's back while those loser criminals take the fall."
Barbara flushed crimson, her steps faltering under the sudden intimacy. Wide-eyed, she looked straight ahead, her composure rattled. "I guess… I mean, that does sound wonderful. Would I get to do it with you?"
Pamela's smile turned sly. "Of course. I need a beautiful sidekick to help me build our criminal empire."
Pamela leaned in, as her lips brushed Barbara's in a gentle kiss. For a moment Barbara stood frozen, her eyes wide, sparks moved around her hair. A soft pop sounded as static discharged through her hair, releasing a faint puff of smoke.
When Pamela pulled back, Barbara's hair was flawless, every strand perfectly in place. Only her flushed cheeks betrayed the storm Pamela left behind in her heart.
