Barbara stepped forward as the last two wolves lowered themselves, vines twitching along their distorted bodies. Their yellow-green eyes locked on her, lips peeling back over teeth rimmed with sap. Pamela's whip withdrew fully to her wrist, leaving Barbara standing alone in the corridor of steel and shadow.
One of the wolves sprang into the air, its jaws wide, aiming straight for her chest.
Barbara's eyes looked up, calm and steady. "It's time to deliver a shock to your system."
She raised her hand toward the ceiling. Sparks leapt from the overhead lighting grid, drawn down as though yanked by invisible wires. Electricity crackled through the air, flooding into her right arm until her skin glowed faintly blue. In a swift motion she lifted her left hand, shaping the current into a spear of pure lightning.
The bolt launched forward like a javelin, slicing through the air. It struck the airborne wolf in the belly, detonating in a flash of light. The creature yelped, but the sound cut off in a violent burst as its torso exploded into green gore, shredded vines, and moss-slick entrails. Its hind legs and tail landed with a wet smack, sliding across the floor before going still.
The second wolf skidded back, ears flattening. A low whine rumbled in its throat, hesitation flickering through its body. Then its muscles spasmed, as if triggered by some unseen command. With renewed frenzy, it lunged straight for Barbara, claws making sparks from the steel floor.
Barbara twisted her hips, pivoting sharply. Her leg whipped out into a roundhouse kick, her shoe connected with the side of the wolf's skull. The impact cracked bone—but it was the electrical surge that followed that finished it off. Electricity discharged from her nanite-infused body in a violent flood, coursing straight into the beast's brain.
The wolf convulsed midair before crashing to the ground. Its limbs jerked once, twice, before collapsing fully, smoke seeping from its eye sockets and gaping mouth. The smell of charred moss and scorched flesh filled the corridor.
Pamela exhaled sharply, her lips tugging into a brief grin. "Ooh, you scrambled its brains."
Barbara brushed her hands off, electricity still humming faintly across her skin. "I know, right? I'm basically a living taser."
Silence settled over the hall again, broken only by the faint hiss of cooling vines. The ground was littered with mulch-like remains, sap puddles, and twitching plant tissue. Pamela glanced around, her Midnight Rose loosening as it pulsed faintly at her wrist.
"That should be it for the professor's guards," she said, her breath steadying. "I doubt he has much more left to throw at us."
Barbara stepped closer, her expression sharpening into a determined smile. "Then it's time to deliver the punishment he deserves… for capturing two strong, independent women like us."
