Chapter 44 - And So It Begins

"It's too risky to be outside our dorms for a prolonged amount of time," Greengrass said, thinking hard. "If you were Quirrell - no, if you were the Dark Lord, when would you make your move?"

"Definitely after dark," Blake said. "But after dark, it could be at any point, right?"

"Most likely to be as soon as possible or as late as possible - but then again, he could be thinking along those lines too," Greengrass mused.

"You're right - we'll have to take the risk and hope the Disillusionment and Muffliato charms are good enough."

Blake looked at his watch.

"It's just turned 7. Sunset starts at 9:15-ish."

"I'll tell Tracey and Charlotte you're feeling ill and that we shouldn't go to your room today."

"Zabini won't ask any questions as to where I'm going - I think."

"Ok. Whatever happens, make sure you're ready to leave by 9:45 at the latest. When it gets fully dark, we'll leave our dorms."

"Meet at the left-side stairs to the third floor corridor? Quirrell goes by the right, so it's safer, and we should be able to hear."

"Ok - behind the pillar on the right. You have to wait for me."

"Ok, ok."

"And remember the violin."

"I'm not an idiot!"

The pair separated, both of them nervous beyond belief. Finally, 9:30 came, and Blake prepared to leave.

"Where are you going?"

Blake barely stifled his groan. Of course he's awake.

"I have an errand to run."

"Has it got something to do with Greengrass?"

"Huh?"

"You've been spending a lot of time with her recently."

"Shut up, Zabini."

Zabini snorted and went back to bed.

"Remember to take protection."

"Die."

Blake left the dorm with a blush on his face.

Where is she?

The plan was already going badly. Not only was it so windy that he couldn't hear anything in the floor above, so God knew whether or not anyone had entered the room, but she was late? After telling me not to be late?

Blake looked at his watch through the minimal moonlight.

9:58.

She's too late. Something's wrong, he thought, terrified that Voldemort might've realised what was going on.

Suddenly, Blake became aware that his Disillusionment had been cancelled.

Shi-

Greengrass was standing behind him, and from his limited field of vision, she was holding her finger over her mouth, telling him to be quiet, and then she took out her wand and cast a modified Muffliato.

"Here," she said, handing him a bunch of small bottles. Potions?

"This is why I was late. There were some prefects patrolling the area. Quickly take them, I heard Potter and his friends at some point too!"

Seeing Greengrass take them before he did, Blake had very little choice or time but to take them. Immediately, he felt the change. Less anxious, more confidence, stronger, even more magical, somehow. Exstimulo Potion, or Maxima Potion… how did she get it?

Blake had no time to get distracted however. With a look to Greengrass and a prayer to whatever higher power was up there, Blake started up the stairs and to the room.

He touched the handle. The door's already open. Looking at Greengrass, he was sure she realised too. Blake stepped back, and held the violin up, ready to play. Greengrass inched the door open, and there it was. Fluffy the three headed dog was there - awake, but seemingly sleepy, and that wasn't all.

While Blake wasted no time to start playing, Greengrass noted something. "There's a harp right there - look, a trapdoor right under too!" she whispered.

Soon enough, Fluffy fell asleep, and Blake continued to play until they were both through the trapdoor. Unfortunately, the tumble down was very long, and it was all both of them could do not to scream.

When they reached the bottom however, Blake immediately realised something was wrong.

"Greengrass-"

"I know!" It was a plant - the Devil's Snare - and thanks to Neville, Blake knew just what to do.

"Incendio!" he bellowed, and in an instant, the plant shrunk away from him, letting him go, before letting go of the girl shortly after.

Blake smirked at her, despite the situation.

"I don't want to hear a word, you got lucky you were holding your wand."

"Excuses."

The pair looked around, their wands lit, and Greengrass saw the exit.

"Great," she said dryly. "Flying keys."

Blake looked around. So, I'm assuming that door on the other side is locked, and the key's up there. He and Greengrass made their way to the door, carefully assessing the lock.

"There's broomsticks," he said pointing.

"There's hundreds of keys."

"What do you suggest, genius?"

Greengrass mounted a broom, and shot up, leaving Blake to hastily follow after her.

"Look for one that's got any signs of having already been used, and a similar shape!"

Neither of them were particularly gifted on a broom, but Greengrass quickly noticed something.

"There!"

Before he could register what was happening, Greengrass had already flown down and opened the door.

"Shut up, Greengrass," Blake said before she could even get a word out.

The pair walked across, until they finally saw the next challenge. Blake grinned, as did Greengrass - until they saw someone they realised.

Blake immediately ran over.

"Weasley! Weasley, wake up!"

Weasley was out cold, but Blake was relieved to find that he was still breathing.

"Move!" Greengrass ordered. From her robes, she produced yet another potion, and force fed it to the ginger boy.

"He'll wake up soon," she said, and Blake could see the wound on his head began to heal.

"Let's focus on this."

"This is definitely McGonagall's."

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't I better than you at Wizard Chess?"

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that my first time ever playing?"

The pair quickly realised what was required of them, and soon enough, they cleared the game.

"I basically did everything," Blake announced.

"We did the same," Greengrass insisted, which to Blake was more or less an admission of defeat.

Surprisingly, however, the next challenge had already been completed for them. A troll was there, yes, but it was knocked out cold.

"That's a troll? Who's challenge is that?"

"Quirrell's. Remember, he loves trolls?" Blake said, hurrying across the room, thinking back to the DADA lessons. "Now that I think about, on Halloween-"

"You only just realised? Hurry up! Quirrell, Granger and Potter are already there!"

Blake found it ironic that he was already in the next room before her, but he made no comment - not when Harry and Hermione were standing right before him.
